Devshayani Ekadashi is not a Gregorian date. It is Shukla paksha tithi 11 of Ashadha in the amanta reckoning, and the Gregorian day it lands on moves by up to a month between years because twelve lunations fall about eleven days short of a solar year.

Sunrise in New Delhi falls at 5:32 AM on that day, and that is the instant the tithi has to be running at for the day to carry the observance. It is computed for this city rather than assumed, because it is what decides the date.

The two instants above are the astronomy and are not in dispute. The day is an interpretation of them: this observance is decided at sunrise, so it belongs to the day whose sunrise the tithi carries — not simply to the day the tithi begins.

Devshayani Ekadashi 2027: Smarta and Vaishnava dates

Listed here (Smarta, the sunrise rule)
Wednesday, 14 July 2027 — The fast belongs to the day whose sunrise carries Ekadashi — the day AstroSage lists and the one this page leads with.
Vaishnava (ISKCON), the arunodaya rule
Wednesday, 14 July 2027 — The same day this year. The Vaishnava rule reads the tithi at arunodaya, the 96 minutes before sunrise, rather than at sunrise; the arunodaya of Wednesday, 14 July 2027 (14 Jul, 3:56 AM) is already inside Ekadashi, not Dashami.

Every day above is computed for New Delhi from the same tithi instants. ISKCON temples publish their own calendar for each city and also apply the Mahadvadashi rules, which can move a fast to Dwadashi in some years — where your temple's calendar differs, follow it.

Meaning and vrat katha

Devshayani Ekadashi vrat katha and significance

Also known as Deva Shayani, Harishayani, Ashadhi, Padma Ekadashi.

Devshayani Ekadashi, the bright-half Ekadashi of Ashadha, is the day Vishnu is said to lie down on Shesha in the ocean of milk for four months of yoga-nidra. It opens Chaturmas, the season in which weddings and other new beginnings are set aside, which closes on Dev Uthani Ekadashi. In Maharashtra it is Ashadhi Ekadashi, the day the Pandharpur wari reaches Vitthal; it is also called Harishayani and Padma Ekadashi.

The katha

Retold in brief from the Bhavishyottara Purana, in Krishna's Ekadashi-mahatmya to Yudhishthira, where Brahma first tells it to Narada.

In the Satya Yuga the righteous king Mandhata ruled a prosperous kingdom. Then, for three years running, the rains failed. Crops withered, the granaries emptied and the people came to the palace asking what wrong had brought this on them.

Mandhata could find no fault in his own rule. Taking a few companions, he went into the forest in search of an answer and reached the ashram of the sage Angira, the son of Brahma.

The king told the sage of the drought and asked how it could be ended. Angira named a cause from the customs of that age, and then gave a remedy that did not require punishing anyone: the king and his subjects should keep the Ekadashi of the bright half of Ashadha, called Padma, with full devotion.

Mandhata returned and had the vrat kept across the kingdom, by every household. The Purana says that the rains came, the fields filled and the people prospered again. Krishna tells Yudhishthira that this Ekadashi is the day Vishnu begins his sleep, and that it should be kept by anyone who seeks his grace for the four months that follow.

How the fast is kept

  • The fast runs from sunrise on the Ekadashi day to parana on Dwadashi. Many families eat a single plain meal on Dashami, the evening before.
  • Grains and rice are left out on Ekadashi. Those who cannot keep a complete fast take fruit, milk or a phalahar meal; a waterless fast is kept only by those whose tradition and health allow it.
  • Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi leaves, a lamp and his names; reading or hearing the day's katha is part of the observance, and many stay awake for a part of the night in kirtan or japa.
  • Parana is on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara — the first quarter of Dwadashi — has passed. The window for your city is computed above.

Fasting customs are described here as tradition, not as medical advice. Consult a doctor before fasting, particularly if you are pregnant, diabetic, elderly or on medication.

Devshayani Ekadashi muhurat

Devshayani Ekadashi, the bright-half Ekadashi of Ashadha, is the day Vishnu is said to begin his four-month sleep on Shesha, and the day Chaturmas begins; in Maharashtra it is Ashadhi Ekadashi, when the Pandharpur wari reaches Vitthal. In New Delhi it falls on Wednesday, 14 July 2027: the fast runs from sunrise to parana on Dwadashi, 15 Jul, 5:32 AM to 8:18 AM, and Vishnu is laid to rest in the evening. It is also called Harishayani or Padma Ekadashi.

Parana: the time to break the fast15 Jul, 5:32 AM to 8:18 AMThe morning of Dwadashi (the first fifth of the day), Hari Vasara having ended overnight.

The window on Dwadashi, the morning after the fast, in which Devshayani Ekadashi is completed. It opens once Hari Vasara is over and normally closes with the first part of the morning; when Hari Vasara runs late it moves past midday, and it never runs beyond the end of Dwadashi. The time shown is computed for New Delhi.

Hari Vasara ends7:33 PMThe end of the first quarter of Dwadashi; the fast is never broken inside it.

Hari Vasara is the first quarter of Dwadashi. The fast is not broken inside it, even when it is already morning, so its end in New Delhi is the earliest moment parana can begin.

Brahma Muhurta4:10 AM to 4:51 AMThe 14th of the night's fifteen muhurtas, ending one muhurta before sunrise.

The hour before dawn on the Ekadashi day, the traditional time to wake, bathe and take the sankalp of the fast.

Sunrise5:32 AMThe upper edge of the Sun on the horizon, with refraction.

The fast is counted from sunrise on Ekadashi to parana on Dwadashi, and the morning puja begins after it.

Puja vidhi · step by step at home

Devshayani Ekadashi puja vidhi

  1. The day before: Dashami

Eat a single simple meal on Dashami, before sunset, without onion, garlic or rice, and keep the evening light and quiet. Clean the puja corner and pick the tulsi leaves you will need, since tulsi is not plucked on Ekadashi itself.

  2. Wake early and bathe

Rise early on Ekadashi, in Brahma Muhurta if you can, bathe (a few drops of Ganga jal in the water if you have it) and put on clean clothes; yellow is the colour traditionally worn for Vishnu.

  3. Take the sankalp

Sit before the altar, hold a little water and a flower in your right hand and resolve to keep the vrat: say your name, that you are keeping Devshayani Ekadashi for Vishnu, and how you will fast, whether without water, on water alone, on fruit or with one phalahar meal. Then let the water fall. The Ekadashi sankalpa verse in the mantra section can be said here.

  4. Set up the altar

Spread a yellow cloth on a clean chowki and place an image of Vishnu or Krishna on it (a Shaligram or Laddu Gopal if the house keeps one), with a ghee lamp and a small kalash or lota of water. Remember Ganesh first, with a flower and Om Gam Ganapataye Namah, as every puja begins.

  5. Worship Vishnu

Bathe a metal idol or the Shaligram with water, then panchamrit, then water again (for a picture, sprinkle water with a flower). Offer sandalwood, yellow flowers, a yellow cloth or mauli, incense, the lamp and tulsi leaves picked the day before, chanting Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya. Many households keep rice out of the Ekadashi puja altogether and offer a flower or a few sesame seeds where akshat would go.

  6. Offer bhog

Offer what you will eat yourself: fruit, a sweet made without grain, makhana, dry fruit or panchamrit, with a tulsi leaf on each offering. Nothing cooked from grain or pulses is offered or eaten on Ekadashi.

  7. Katha and aarti

Read or listen to the Devshayani Ekadashi vrat katha below, and the Vishnu Sahasranama or a chapter of the Gita if you can. Then sing Om Jai Jagdish Hare with a ghee lamp or camphor, and ask pardon for any mistake made in the puja.

  8. Take a Chaturmas vow, if you wish

Chaturmas begins today. Many take a vow for the four months, to give up a food, keep a daily japa or read a scripture every day until Dev Uthani, and name it in the sankalp after the katha.

  9. Through the day

Keep the fast as you resolved it, keep Vishnu's name in mind and avoid sleeping in the day, anger, gossip and harsh words. Give water, fruit or food to someone who needs it; charity is part of every Ekadashi.

  10. Lamps at dusk

At sunset light a ghee lamp before Vishnu and another beside the tulsi plant, without plucking its leaves, and sing the aarti again.

  11. Lay Vishnu to rest: the shayan

After the evening aarti, prepare a small bed for the image: a clean cloth or a little cot with a white or yellow sheet and a pillow. Lay Vishnu, the Shaligram or Laddu Gopal down on it, fan him gently, offer a lamp and flowers, and say the shayan verse; many sing him to sleep with a bhajan.

  12. The night vigil

Stay awake for as much of the night as you can, in kirtan, japa or reading; the middle of the night is the heart of the jagran. Those who cannot keep the whole night keep a part of it.

  13. Dwadashi: give, then break the fast

Next morning bathe, worship Vishnu briefly and give food, grain or a gift to a brahmin or someone in need. Then break the fast inside the parana window: a tulsi leaf with water, or a fruit, first, saying the parana verse, and after it a simple sattvic meal.

Significance

Why Devshayani Ekadashi is kept

The day asks for a vow. From this evening until Vishnu is woken in Kartika, many give up one food, keep a daily japa or read a scripture every day, and name that vow in the sankalp after the katha. The evening rite is tender rather than grand: a small bed made up for the image, a lamp, a fan and a lullaby-like bhajan. Guru Purnima follows a few days later, and the katha closes with Krishna's word that anyone who wants his grace for the coming four months should keep this fast.

In Maharashtra it is Ashadhi Ekadashi, the great day of the Warkari year, when the pilgrims of the Pandharpur wari reach Vitthal after walking for weeks. Its katha, from the Bhavishyottara Purana, tells of King Mandhata's kingdom saved from three years of drought when every household kept this Ekadashi. It falls between late June and late July, almost always in July.

Upay · traditional practice

Devshayani Ekadashi upay: traditional remedies

Lay the Lord to rest with care

Prepare the shayan with your own hands, a clean bed, a fresh sheet, a lamp and a bhajan; the care given to Vishnu's rest is the heart of the day.

A Chaturmas vow

Take one small vow for the four months, a food given up, a daily japa or a chapter read each day, and keep it until Dev Uthani; tradition values a modest vow kept over a large one dropped.

Remember the rains

Mandhata's kingdom was saved from drought by this fast. Plant a tree, clean a water tank or support rainwater harvesting as your daan of the season.

Vitthal's name

In Maharashtra, chant Rama Krishna Hari through the day, visit a Vitthal temple, or join the pilgrims on a stretch of the wari road.

Feed the pilgrims

Families along the wari route give the Warkaris food, water and rest; anywhere, feeding a pilgrim or a traveller on this day is in the same spirit.

A lamp through Chaturmas

Many light a lamp before Vishnu every evening of Chaturmas, from Devshayani to Dev Uthani, as a quiet watch over the sleeping Lord.

The custom, in short

Devshayani Ekadashi do's and don'ts

Do

  • Eat one light sattvic meal on Dashami, before sunset.
  • Take the sankalp in the morning and keep the fast in the form you chose.
  • Put a tulsi leaf, picked the day before, on every offering.
  • Chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya and read or hear the katha.
  • Light a lamp before Vishnu and beside the tulsi at dusk.
  • Keep at least part of the night awake in kirtan or japa.
  • Give food or water to someone in need, and give daan on Dwadashi before parana.
  • Break the fast inside the parana window on Dwadashi.
  • Lay Vishnu to rest in the evening with the shayan verse.
  • Take a Chaturmas vow if you wish, and keep it until Dev Uthani.

Don't

  • Do not eat rice, wheat, dal or any other grain or pulse on Ekadashi.
  • Do not pluck tulsi leaves on Ekadashi.
  • Do not eat onion, garlic, meat or eggs, or drink alcohol, from Dashami to Dwadashi.
  • Do not sleep during the day.
  • Do not quarrel, lie or speak harshly.
  • Do not break the fast during Hari Vasara, or let Dwadashi pass without parana.
  • Do not press the sick, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women or children into a strict fast; anyone with diabetes or another condition, or on regular medicine, should ask a doctor before fasting.
  • By the custom of Chaturmas, do not fix weddings, griha pravesh or mundan for the four months that begin today.

Across India

Devshayani Ekadashi customs and food

By region

Maharashtra (Pandharpur)
Ashadhi Ekadashi: the Warkaris' palkhis of the saints reach Pandharpur after weeks on foot, lakhs take darshan of Vitthal and Rukmini, and the state's official mahapuja is performed at the temple.
North India
Devshayani or Harishayani Ekadashi: Vishnu is laid to rest on a little bed in the evening, and Chaturmas vows begin.
Vaishnava communities
Chaturmas vows of food and practice begin, kept until Dev Uthani in Kartika.

Bhog, prasad and fasting food

  • Fruit and milk The simplest phalahar: seasonal fruit, milk, curd or buttermilk through the day.
  • Sabudana khichdi Sago with potato and rock salt, often with peanuts; a staple fasting meal in many homes.
  • Kuttu or singhara puri Buckwheat or water-chestnut flour with potato sabzi, in families whose custom allows these flours.
  • Samak, the vrat rice Barnyard millet cooked like rice in North India; some traditions count millets as grain and leave it out.
  • Potato, sweet potato and arbi Boiled, or lightly fried in ghee with rock salt, cumin and green chilli.
  • Makhana Roasted, or as kheer, for the bhog and the fast.
  • Sendha namak (rock salt) Used instead of common salt by most who fast; some keep the day without salt altogether.
  • The parana meal On Dwadashi, a tulsi leaf with water or a fruit first, then a simple home-cooked meal; grain returns with the parana.

There is no single authority that settles a Hindu festival date, and the divergence is genuine rather than sloppy. Three causes account for almost all of it.

  1. A tithi rarely starts at sunrise. One that is running at the deciding moment on two days — or on none — is claimed by both days under different rules.
  2. Month reckoning. North India runs purnimanta, the south and west amanta. The same dark fortnight carries different month names in the two, so an observance defined as "krishna X of month Y" can land a full lunation apart.
  3. Which moment decides. Most vratas belong to the day whose sunrise carries the tithi, but not all: this one is decided at sunrise. Almanacs that apply the sunrise rule to everything move several festivals by a day.

So this page shows its working. If your pandit or your family almanac gives a different day, the instants above will usually show you exactly why — and that is more useful than a date asserted without one.

Common questions

When is Devshayani Ekadashi?

In New Delhi, Devshayani Ekadashi falls on Wednesday, 14 July 2027, and Ekadashi tithi runs 12:09 PM (13 Jul) to 1:10 PM. It is the bright-half Ekadashi of Ashadha, the same in every calendar, and it comes between late June and late July, in almost every year in July.

Why does another calendar give a different Devshayani Ekadashi date?

Three honest reasons. The tithi can be running at the deciding moment on two days or on none. North India reckons the month purnimanta and the south and west amanta, which names the same krishna fortnight differently. And almanacs differ on which moment of the day decides an observance. The instants above are the astronomy; the day is an interpretation of them.

Why is Devshayani Ekadashi observed?

Devshayani Ekadashi, the bright-half Ekadashi of Ashadha, is the day Vishnu is said to lie down on Shesha in the ocean of milk for four months of yoga-nidra. It opens Chaturmas, the season in which weddings and other new beginnings are set aside, which closes on Dev Uthani Ekadashi. In Maharashtra it is Ashadhi Ekadashi, the day the Pandharpur wari reaches Vitthal; it is also called Harishayani and Padma Ekadashi.

Where does the Devshayani Ekadashi vrat katha come from?

It is told in the Bhavishyottara Purana, in Krishna's Ekadashi-mahatmya to Yudhishthira, where Brahma first tells it to Narada. The katha is retold in full above.

Is Devshayani Ekadashi on a different day for Smarta and Vaishnava (ISKCON)?

Not this year — both keep Wednesday, 14 July 2027. The Vaishnava rule reads Ekadashi at arunodaya, and Ekadashi already holds that day's arunodaya.

Is Ashadhi Ekadashi the same as Devshayani Ekadashi?

Yes. Ashadhi Ekadashi is Maharashtra's name for the same day, the bright-half Ekadashi of Ashadha, so in New Delhi it is also on Wednesday, 14 July 2027. It is the day the Pandharpur wari reaches Vitthal, while North India keeps it as Devshayani, the day Vishnu goes to sleep.

What is the Devshayani Ekadashi parana time?

Parana is on Dwadashi: in New Delhi, 15 Jul, 5:32 AM to 8:18 AM, once Hari Vasara has ended (7:33 PM). Those who take a Chaturmas vow often begin keeping it from this parana onward.

What is the Devshayani Ekadashi vrat katha?

In the Satya Yuga the rains failed for three years in King Mandhata's kingdom. Finding no fault in his own rule, he went into the forest and reached the sage Angira, who gave him a remedy that punished no one: let the king and every household keep the Padma Ekadashi of the bright half of Ashadha. Mandhata had it kept across the kingdom, and the Purana says the rains came and the fields filled again. The full katha is above.

What happens on Devshayani Ekadashi?

By tradition Vishnu lies down on Shesha in the ocean of milk and enters four months of yoga-nidra, devshayani meaning the sleeping of the god. Families fast, worship him, lay his image to rest on a little bed in the evening, and begin Chaturmas, which lasts until he is woken on Dev Uthani Ekadashi.

When does Chaturmas begin and end?

Chaturmas begins on Devshayani Ekadashi, this day, and ends on Dev Uthani Ekadashi, the bright-half Ekadashi of Kartika, about four lunar months later; some traditions count it from the Dwadashi or the Ashadha Purnima instead. The Chaturmas page gives both dates for New Delhi.

What are the rules of Chaturmas?

Weddings, griha pravesh, mundan and other new beginnings are set aside until Dev Uthani. Many keep a vow for the four months, and the food discipline the Padma Purana gives leaves out leafy greens in Shravana, curd in Bhadrapada, milk in Ashwin and pulses (dal) in Kartika. Simpler vows, one meal a day, a daily japa or reading, are just as common.

Why is Ashadhi Ekadashi celebrated in Pandharpur?

Pandharpur is the home of Vitthal, Krishna as the Warkaris worship him, standing on a brick with his hands on his hips. For centuries the Warkaris have walked to him in the wari, carrying the palkhis of saints such as Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram, to arrive for Ashadhi Ekadashi, the greatest of their year.

Why is it also called Padma or Harishayani Ekadashi?

Padma Ekadashi is the name its katha uses: the sage Angira tells King Mandhata to keep the Padma Ekadashi of Ashadha. Harishayani means Hari's sleeping, the same idea as Devshayani. Ashadhi is Maharashtra's name. All four are the same day.

How is the shayan puja done at home on Devshayani?

After the morning puja and the day's fast, prepare a small bed in the evening: a clean cloth or a little cot with a white or yellow sheet and a pillow. Lay the image of Vishnu, a Shaligram or Laddu Gopal on it, fan him gently, offer flowers and a lamp, say the shayan verse and sing a bhajan. He is woken the same way on Dev Uthani.

Which mantra is said on Devshayani Ekadashi?

The shayan verse, Supte tvayi Jagannatha, is said while laying Vishnu to rest: when you sleep the world sleeps, when you wake it wakes. With it go Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, the Shantakaram verse that pictures him resting on the serpent, and in Maharashtra Rama Krishna Hari. All are in the mantra section.

What is the importance of Devshayani Ekadashi?

It begins the four holy months of Chaturmas and Vishnu's sleep, and Krishna tells Yudhishthira that whoever wants his grace through those months should keep it. In Maharashtra it is the greatest day of the Warkari year, and its katha links it to the coming of the rains.

Which aarti is sung on Devshayani and Ashadhi Ekadashi?

Om Jai Jagdish Hare, printed in full above, after the morning puja and before the shayan in the evening. In Maharashtra the Vitthal aarti Yuge atthavis is sung in homes and at Pandharpur, and Warkaris sing the abhangas of the saints.

What should be eaten in the Devshayani fast and through Chaturmas?

On the day, phalahar without grain: fruit, milk, makhana, sabudana, potato and, where custom allows, kuttu or rajgira. Through Chaturmas many keep food simple and sattvic, and some follow the four-month discipline of giving up leafy greens, curd, milk and pulses in turn.
