Expression every letter
The whole name added up
The abilities and working style you are most likely to express outwardly. It is the number people mean when they say “your name number”.

Every letter carries a value. Add them and you get the Expression number; the vowels alone give Soul Urge, the consonants give Personality. The two systems below assign different values to the same letters, which is why they disagree - both are shown.
Your name numbers
All three come from the same letters, split three ways: every letter, the vowels only, and the consonants only. They are three views of one name, not three separate verdicts.
Expression every letter
The abilities and working style you are most likely to express outwardly. It is the number people mean when they say “your name number”.
Soul Urge vowels only
What you want privately, whether or not you act on it. Traditionally the number read last and shared least.
Personality consonants only
The impression the name makes before anyone knows you — the outer edge of the same word.
These three values are produced by whichever letter table you selected. Switching between Pythagorean and Chaldean and calculating a second time is the honest way to use this page: the two answers sit side by side in your head rather than one being presented as the truth. The worked example further down shows the same name run through both.
Unchanged by your name
Shown for contrast. These come from the date and stay exactly the same whichever name or system you enter.
Ruled by . Your day of birth reduced to a single digit.
Ruled by . The whole date added together and reduced.
In plain language
Five cards: the three from your name and the two from your date, each with the trait it is given and the difficulty that usually comes with it.
The calculation
Every letter is given a number. Add all of them and you have the Expression. Add only the vowels and you have the Soul Urge. Add only the consonants and you have the Personality. That is the entire method — and it means the three numbers are not independent of each other.
Before any reducing is done, the raw vowel total plus the raw consonant total always equals the raw total of the whole name. That identity is exact, and it is the quickest way to check a calculation by hand: if your Soul Urge and Personality sums do not add up to your Expression sum, a letter has been missed.
The totals are then reduced by adding their digits until one digit is left — except for 11, 22 and 33, which are held as master numbers and left alone. So a raw total of 23 becomes 5, but a raw total of 11 stays 11. This is why two names that both “are a 5” may have arrived there from 14, 23, 32 or 41, which some practitioners treat as meaningfully different starting points.
| Letter | Vowel or consonant | Pythagorean | Chaldean |
|---|---|---|---|
| P | Consonant | 7 | 8 |
| R | Consonant | 9 | 2 |
| I | Vowel | 9 | 1 |
| Y | Consonant | 7 | 1 |
| A | Vowel | 1 | 1 |
| Expression | All five letters | 33 → kept as 33 | 13 → 4 |
| Soul Urge | I + A | 10 → 1 | 2 |
| Personality | P + R + Y | 23 → 5 | 11 → kept as 11 |
The check works in both columns: 10 + 23 = 33, and 2 + 11 = 13. The same five letters give an Expression of 33 in one system and 4 in the other, which is the clearest possible demonstration that a name number is a property of the table you chose, not of the name. A full name is calculated the same way — PRIYA is used alone here only to keep the arithmetic short enough to follow.
Y carries the same value either way, so your Expression is unaffected. But practitioners who treat Y as a vowel when it makes a vowel sound — in Lynn, Yvonne, Bryan — will get a different Soul Urge and Personality from the same name. This calculator applies the simple rule: A, E, I, O and U are vowels and every other letter is a consonant. If your name leans on Y, calculate it by hand the other way as well and see how much moves.
Two tables
They are not two versions of one method. They are two unrelated ways of attaching numbers to letters, and there is no procedure for deciding between them.
A is 1, B is 2, and so on to I at 9, then the count restarts: J is 1, K is 2. Every letter from A to Z has a value from 1 to 9, and the pattern is regular enough to reconstruct from memory. It is the system most Western books use, and the default here.
Letters are grouped by the sound they carry rather than their position in the alphabet, which is why the table looks arbitrary — F and P share 8; O and Z share 7. It assigns nothing to 9, held to be sacred, though 9 can still turn up as a total.
Chaldean is older and its defenders argue that sound is the meaningful unit. Pythagorean is simpler and far more widely used. There is no test that distinguishes them, and a practitioner who tells you one is correct is stating a preference.
The practical rule. Comparing your name across both tables is interesting; switching systems until a number you like appears is not numerology, and the tradition itself does not sanction it.
The complete letter-to-number table for both systems, all twenty-six letters side by side, is on the numerology alphabet chart.
Honest limits
The name in daily circulation is the one the tradition reads for how you are met. Your birth name, as recorded, is read as the underlying pattern. Neither cancels the other, and calculating both is more useful than choosing.
Sanjay and Sanjai, Priya and Priyaa, Mohd and Mohammed all produce different numbers, and transliteration from another script has no single correct form. This is the largest source of disagreement between two calculators fed the same person.
Numerology describes patterns; it does not claim that changing a spelling causes events. Consultants who sell a name change with a promised outcome are selling something the tradition does not support.
A name number is conventionally assessed in relation to the Mulank and Bhagyank, which is why both are shown in your result. A number read entirely on its own is the thinnest use anyone makes of this.
Start with the name you actually use day to day, since that is the one in circulation. Calculating your birth name as well is a useful comparison rather than a competing answer.
Pythagorean assigns 1-9 to letters in alphabetical order. Chaldean assigns values by sound and never uses 9. They produce different numbers from the same name, and neither is a correction of the other.
Include the full name you are asking about. If you go by a shortened form, calculate both and compare.
Numerology describes patterns; it does not claim a spelling change causes events. Treat a name number as a lens, not a lever.
More calculators
If you came here to check a company name rather than your own, the business calculator applies the same two tables with a different reading. The Chaldean page runs this calculation with that table as the default.
All of them, read together
This page computes one number and shows its working, which is what it is for. The Numerology Report takes the same name and date and reads the whole set against each other — the two date numbers, the three name numbers, the Lo Shu grid, any karmic debt before reduction, and where the nine-year cycle currently sits. It is the one page in this set that costs anything, its price is in coins rather than rupees, and every figure inside it can still be checked free on the calculator that computes it.
