The words above are for at sunrise 06:28. Later the same day:
- The tithi changes from Purnima to Krishna Pratipada at 09:41.
- The nakshatra changes from Ashwini to Bharani at 17:41.
A puja after that time names the new value. Enter the puja time in the form and the sankalp is filled in for that moment.
- After bathing, sit at the place of worship facing east or north.
- Take a little water, a few grains of unbroken rice (akshat) and a flower in the right palm.
- Say the sankalp — your gotra, your name and the deity of the puja where it says अमुक.
- On करिष्ये ("I shall perform"), let the water fall to the ground or into a plate, and begin the puja.
- From विष्णुर्विष्णुर्विष्णुः to कलिप्रथमचरणे: this moment in cosmic time — in Brahma's day, the Shveta Varaha kalpa, the Vaivasvata manvantara and the first quarter of the Kali Yuga.
- जम्बूद्वीपे भारतवर्षे … नगरे: the place on earth, and your town.
- Samvat, samvatsara, ayana, ritu, masa, paksha, tithi, vara and nakshatra: today in the panchang.
- … गोत्रोत्पन्नः … नामाहं: "I, born in this gotra, of this name". ममोपात्तदुरितक्षयद्वारा श्रीपरमेश्वरप्रीत्यर्थं … पूजनं करिष्ये: "for the removal of my sins, for the pleasure of the Supreme Lord, I shall worship this deity".
- The frame is the puja sankalp in Gita Press's Nitya Karma Puja Prakash (page 171), word for word. The ayana and nakshatra are placed where Gita Press prints them in its Durga Saptashati sankalp, and the ritu where the long karmakand sankalp has it. The month, tithi and weekday words are the book's own list (प्रतिपद्, मंगल, बृहस्पति).
- The book's आर्यावर्तैकदेशे, the name of the kshetra or river, and प्रातः/सायंकाले (morning or evening) are left out: they differ by region and by family. Add them if your family says them.
- For a puja done with a particular wish, the priest adds the wish before श्रीपरमेश्वरप्रीत्यर्थं.
- Every date word comes from this site's panchang engine, the one the panchang pages print: Swiss Ephemeris, the Lahiri ayanamsa and the chosen city's own sunrise.
- Without a puja time it uses the panchang at sunrise; with one, the tithi, nakshatra and month running at that moment.
- The ritu follows the chosen calendar's month, two months to a season. Some almanacs count the ritu by the Sun's sign instead, and may name a different season.
Sankalp Mantra FAQ
What is a sankalp mantra?
A sankalp is the resolve spoken before a puja. It says who is performing the puja, where and when — by samvatsara, ayana, ritu, month, paksha, tithi, weekday and nakshatra — and for what purpose.
How do you take a sankalp?
Hold water, a few grains of unbroken rice (akshat) and a flower in the right palm, say the sankalp, and at the end let the water fall to the ground or into a plate. Many families add a betel leaf or nut; follow your family's custom.
Should the sankalp name the tithi at sunrise or at the time of the puja?
A panchang names a day by the tithi running at sunrise. When the tithi has changed by the time of the puja, most pandits speak the one running then. That is why this page says when the tithi changes during the day, and fills in the sankalp for your puja time when you give one.
What gotra do you say if you do not know your gotra?
The common custom is for someone whose gotra is not known to say Kashyap gotra. Asking an elder in the family or the family priest is best.
How is the North Indian sankalp different from the South Indian one?
In the North the month ends at Purnima and the year is counted in Vikram Samvat; in the South and West the month ends at Amavasya and the Shaka Samvat is used, whose samvatsara has a different name. Choose your calendar in the form.
Are my name and gotra saved?
No. They are written only into the one answer sent back to you; they are not saved and never go into the page address.
