Parana (breaking the fast), 13 Aug 20271:45 PM to 4:24 PMHari Vasara runs past the morning, so parana is kept after madhyahna (midday), in the afternoon window.

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is not a Gregorian date. It is Shukla paksha tithi 11 of Shravana in the amanta reckoning, and the Gregorian day it lands on moves by up to a month between years because twelve lunations fall about eleven days short of a solar year.

Sunrise in New Delhi falls at 5:48 AM on that day, and that is the instant the tithi has to be running at for the day to carry the observance. It is computed for this city rather than assumed, because it is what decides the date.

The two instants above are the astronomy and are not in dispute. The day is an interpretation of them: this observance is decided at sunrise, so it belongs to the day whose sunrise the tithi carries — not simply to the day the tithi begins.

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi 2027: Smarta and Vaishnava dates

Listed here (Smarta, the sunrise rule)
Thursday, 12 August 2027 — The fast belongs to the day whose sunrise carries Ekadashi — the day AstroSage lists and the one this page leads with.
Vaishnava (ISKCON), the arunodaya rule
Thursday, 12 August 2027 — The same day this year. The Vaishnava rule reads the tithi at arunodaya, the 96 minutes before sunrise, rather than at sunrise; the arunodaya of Thursday, 12 August 2027 (12 Aug, 4:12 AM) is already inside Ekadashi, not Dashami.

Every day above is computed for New Delhi from the same tithi instants. ISKCON temples publish their own calendar for each city and also apply the Mahadvadashi rules, which can move a fast to Dwadashi in some years — where your temple's calendar differs, follow it.

Meaning and vrat katha

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi vrat katha and significance

Also known as Pavitra Ekadashi.

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is the bright-half Ekadashi of Shravana, one of two Putrada ("giver of a son") Ekadashis — the other is in Pausha. Couples hoping for a child have traditionally kept it, and it is kept today as a prayer for the wellbeing of children. In parts of the South and among Vaishnavas it is Pavitra (or Pavitropana) Ekadashi, when a sacred thread is offered to the deity.

The katha

Retold in brief from the Bhavishya Purana, in Krishna's Ekadashi-mahatmya to Yudhishthira.

King Mahijit of Mahishmati ruled justly and cared for his people, yet he had no son, and the absence weighed on him. His ministers and the elders of the city resolved to find the reason and went into the forest to seek out a sage.

They came to the great ascetic Lomasha, who could see across lifetimes. Lomasha told them that in a past life the king had been a poor merchant. Travelling in the heat one Dwadashi, thirsty and tired, he had reached a pond where a cow and her calf were drinking, and he had driven them away to drink first. That act of unkindness was what stood between him and a son.

The remedy, Lomasha said, was for the king's subjects to keep the Ekadashi of the bright half of Shravana together, and to give its merit to their king.

The people did so with devotion, staying awake through the night and offering the merit to Mahijit on Dwadashi. The Purana says the queen conceived soon after and in time bore a son who became a worthy heir. Krishna tells Yudhishthira that this is why the day is called Putrada.

How the fast is kept

  • The fast runs from sunrise on the Ekadashi day to parana on Dwadashi. Many families eat a single plain meal on Dashami, the evening before.
  • Grains and rice are left out on Ekadashi. Those who cannot keep a complete fast take fruit, milk or a phalahar meal; a waterless fast is kept only by those whose tradition and health allow it.
  • Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi leaves, a lamp and his names; reading or hearing the day's katha is part of the observance, and many stay awake for a part of the night in kirtan or japa.
  • Parana is on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara — the first quarter of Dwadashi — has passed. The window for your city is computed above.

Fasting customs are described here as tradition, not as medical advice. Consult a doctor before fasting, particularly if you are pregnant, diabetic, elderly or on medication.

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi muhurat

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi, the bright-half Ekadashi of Shravana, is kept for Vishnu by couples praying for a child and by parents for their children's wellbeing; in the South it is also Pavitra Ekadashi. In New Delhi it falls on Thursday, 12 August 2027: the fast runs from sunrise to parana on Dwadashi, 13 Aug, 1:45 PM to 4:24 PM. It comes in the monsoon, four days before Raksha Bandhan.

Parana: the time to break the fast13 Aug, 1:45 PM to 4:24 PMHari Vasara runs past the morning, so parana waits until midday has passed: the aparahna.

The window on Dwadashi, the morning after the fast, in which Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is completed. It opens once Hari Vasara is over and normally closes with the first part of the morning; when Hari Vasara runs late it moves past midday, and it never runs beyond the end of Dwadashi. Hari Vasara is the first quarter of Dwadashi. The fast is not broken inside it, even when it is already morning, so its end in New Delhi is the earliest moment parana can begin.

Puja vidhi · step by step at home

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi puja vidhi

  1. The day before: Dashami

Eat a single simple meal on Dashami, before sunset, without onion, garlic or rice, and keep the evening light and quiet. Clean the puja corner and pick the tulsi leaves you will need, since tulsi is not plucked on Ekadashi itself.

  2. Wake early and bathe

Rise early on Ekadashi, in Brahma Muhurta if you can, bathe (a few drops of Ganga jal in the water if you have it) and put on clean clothes; yellow is the colour traditionally worn for Vishnu.

  3. Take the sankalp

Sit before the altar, hold a little water and a flower in your right hand and resolve to keep the vrat: say your name, that you are keeping Shravana Putrada Ekadashi for Vishnu, and how you will fast, whether without water, on water alone, on fruit or with one phalahar meal. Then let the water fall. The Ekadashi sankalpa verse in the mantra section can be said here.

  4. Set up the altar

Spread a yellow cloth on a clean chowki and place an image of Vishnu or Krishna on it (a Shaligram or Laddu Gopal if the house keeps one), with a ghee lamp and a small kalash or lota of water. Remember Ganesh first, with a flower and Om Gam Ganapataye Namah, as every puja begins.

  5. Worship Vishnu

Bathe a metal idol or the Shaligram with water, then panchamrit, then water again (for a picture, sprinkle water with a flower). Offer sandalwood, yellow flowers, a yellow cloth or mauli, incense, the lamp and tulsi leaves picked the day before, chanting Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya. Many households keep rice out of the Ekadashi puja altogether and offer a flower or a few sesame seeds where akshat would go.

  6. Offer the pavitra thread, where it is the custom

In parts of the South and in many Vaishnava homes the day is Pavitra Ekadashi: a garland of cotton or silk threads, the pavitra, is offered to Vishnu after the worship. Couples keeping the vrat for a child then chant the Santana Gopala mantra 108 times before Bal Gopal, side by side.

  7. Offer bhog

Offer what you will eat yourself: fruit, a sweet made without grain, makhana, dry fruit or panchamrit, with a tulsi leaf on each offering. Nothing cooked from grain or pulses is offered or eaten on Ekadashi.

  8. Katha and aarti

Read or listen to the Shravana Putrada Ekadashi vrat katha below, and the Vishnu Sahasranama or a chapter of the Gita if you can. Then sing Om Jai Jagdish Hare with a ghee lamp or camphor, and ask pardon for any mistake made in the puja.

  9. Through the day

Keep the fast as you resolved it, keep Vishnu's name in mind and avoid sleeping in the day, anger, gossip and harsh words. Give water, fruit or food to someone who needs it; charity is part of every Ekadashi.

  10. Water and fodder for a cow and her calf

The katha's trouble began when a thirsty man drove a cow and her calf from a pond. Give water and green fodder to a cow and her calf today, or water to any animal in need.

  11. Lamps at dusk

At sunset light a ghee lamp before Vishnu and another beside the tulsi plant, without plucking its leaves, and sing the aarti again.

  12. The night vigil

Stay awake for as much of the night as you can, in kirtan, japa or reading; the middle of the night is the heart of the jagran. Those who cannot keep the whole night keep a part of it.

  13. Dwadashi: give, then break the fast

Next morning bathe, worship Vishnu briefly and give food, grain or a gift to a brahmin or someone in need. Then break the fast inside the parana window: a tulsi leaf with water, or a fruit, first, saying the parana verse, and after it a simple sattvic meal.

Significance

Why Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is kept

For parents the day is a chance to pray for each child by name and to do something for children who have no one to pray for them: school fees, books or a meal at a children's home. Those who long for a baby keep it with the Santana Gopala mantra, and that hope is best carried alongside a doctor's care, not in place of it. In many Krishna temples the monsoon swing festival, Jhulan, is under way around this day.

Its katha, from the Bhavishya Purana, turns on a small cruelty: King Mahijit of Mahishmati was childless because in a past life he had driven a thirsty cow and her calf from a pond, and it was his subjects who kept this fast together and gave him its merit. So the day carries kindness to animals and the help a community gives its own. It falls between late July and late August, in the monsoon, four days before Raksha Bandhan.

Upay · traditional practice

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi upay: traditional remedies

Water for the cow and calf

Give water and green fodder to a cow and her calf, or set out water for animals in your street; the katha's fault was keeping water from them.

Keep it together

In the katha a whole kingdom fasted for its king. Couples keep the vrat side by side, and parents, grandparents or friends may keep it with them and offer them its merit.

The Santana Gopala mantra

Chant Om Devakisuta Govinda 108 times before Bal Gopal, morning and dusk: a prayer of hope, kept with faith and never as a promise.

The pavitra thread

Where it is the custom, offer Vishnu a garland of cotton or silk thread and keep a strand of it in the home shrine through the year.

Care for children in need

On Dwadashi give books, clothes, rain gear or a meal to children who need them; in the monsoon a raincoat or an umbrella is a practical gift.

Both Putradas in the year

Many couples keep both Putrada Ekadashis, this one in Shravana and the other in Pausha, as one prayer made twice a year, alongside whatever medical care they need.

The custom, in short

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi do's and don'ts

Do

  • Eat one light sattvic meal on Dashami, before sunset.
  • Take the sankalp in the morning and keep the fast in the form you chose.
  • Put a tulsi leaf, picked the day before, on every offering.
  • Chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya and read or hear the katha.
  • Light a lamp before Vishnu and beside the tulsi at dusk.
  • Keep at least part of the night awake in kirtan or japa.
  • Give food or water to someone in need, and give daan on Dwadashi before parana.
  • Break the fast inside the parana window on Dwadashi.
  • Give water and green fodder to a cow and her calf, remembering the katha.
  • Offer a pavitra thread to Vishnu if it is your family's custom.

Don't

  • Do not eat rice, wheat, dal or any other grain or pulse on Ekadashi.
  • Do not pluck tulsi leaves on Ekadashi.
  • Do not eat onion, garlic, meat or eggs, or drink alcohol, from Dashami to Dwadashi.
  • Do not sleep during the day.
  • Do not quarrel, lie or speak harshly.
  • Do not break the fast during Hari Vasara, or let Dwadashi pass without parana.
  • Do not press the sick, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women or children into a strict fast; anyone with diabetes or another condition, or on regular medicine, should ask a doctor before fasting.
  • Do not drive an animal away from water or food; the katha's trouble began with exactly that.
  • Do not treat the fast as a cure; couples hoping to conceive keep it alongside medical care.

Across India

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi customs and food

By region

South India and Vaishnava temples
Pavitra or Pavitropana Ekadashi: a sacred thread garland is offered to the deity.
North India
Shravana or Sawan Putrada Ekadashi, kept by couples for a child and by parents for their children, four days before Raksha Bandhan.

Bhog, prasad and fasting food

  • Fruit and milk The simplest phalahar: seasonal fruit, milk, curd or buttermilk through the day.
  • Sabudana khichdi Sago with potato and rock salt, often with peanuts; a staple fasting meal in many homes.
  • Kuttu or singhara puri Buckwheat or water-chestnut flour with potato sabzi, in families whose custom allows these flours.
  • Samak, the vrat rice Barnyard millet cooked like rice in North India; some traditions count millets as grain and leave it out.
  • Potato, sweet potato and arbi Boiled, or lightly fried in ghee with rock salt, cumin and green chilli.
  • Makhana Roasted, or as kheer, for the bhog and the fast.
  • Sendha namak (rock salt) Used instead of common salt by most who fast; some keep the day without salt altogether.
  • The parana meal On Dwadashi, a tulsi leaf with water or a fruit first, then a simple home-cooked meal; grain returns with the parana.

Every row is computed for New Delhi from the same ephemeris, not looked up. Sunrise decides which day a tithi names, and sunrise differs across India by more than an hour, so a date computed for Delhi can be a day out elsewhere.

Why calendars disagree about this date

There is no single authority that settles a Hindu festival date, and the divergence is genuine rather than sloppy. Three causes account for almost all of it.

  1. A tithi rarely starts at sunrise. One that is running at the deciding moment on two days — or on none — is claimed by both days under different rules.
  2. Month reckoning. North India runs purnimanta, the south and west amanta. The same dark fortnight carries different month names in the two, so an observance defined as "krishna X of month Y" can land a full lunation apart.
  3. Which moment decides. Most vratas belong to the day whose sunrise carries the tithi, but not all: this one is decided at sunrise. Almanacs that apply the sunrise rule to everything move several festivals by a day.

So this page shows its working. If your pandit or your family almanac gives a different day, the instants above will usually show you exactly why — and that is more useful than a date asserted without one.

Common questions

When is Shravana Putrada Ekadashi?

Thursday, 12 August 2027. It is Ekadashi of Shukla paksha in Shravana, and that tithi runs from 12 Aug, 12:59 AM to 13 Aug, 3:00 AM.

Why does another calendar give a different Shravana Putrada Ekadashi date?

Three honest reasons. The tithi can be running at the deciding moment on two days or on none. North India reckons the month purnimanta and the south and west amanta, which names the same krishna fortnight differently. And almanacs differ on which moment of the day decides an observance. The instants above are the astronomy; the day is an interpretation of them.

Why is Shravana Putrada Ekadashi observed?

For the gift and the wellbeing of children: couples keep it hoping for a child, and parents keep it for the health and future of the children they have. Its katha adds two lessons, kindness to animals and the strength of a community that fasts for one of its own.

Where does the Shravana Putrada Ekadashi vrat katha come from?

It is told in the Bhavishya Purana, in Krishna's Ekadashi-mahatmya to Yudhishthira. The katha is retold in full above.

Is Shravana Putrada Ekadashi on a different day for Smarta and Vaishnava (ISKCON)?

Not this year — both keep Thursday, 12 August 2027. The Vaishnava rule reads Ekadashi at arunodaya, and Ekadashi already holds that day's arunodaya.

When is the Sawan (Shravana) Putrada Ekadashi?

In New Delhi, Shravana Putrada Ekadashi falls on Thursday, 12 August 2027, and Ekadashi tithi runs 12:59 AM to 3:00 AM (13 Aug). It is the bright-half Ekadashi of Shravana, usually in August and sometimes at the very end of July, four days before the Shravana Purnima of Raksha Bandhan.

What is Pavitra Ekadashi?

It is the same day under the name used in parts of the South and in Vaishnava temples: Pavitra or Pavitropana Ekadashi, when a pavitra, a garland of sacred thread, is offered to the deity. The fast and the date, Thursday, 12 August 2027 in New Delhi, are those of Shravana Putrada Ekadashi.

At what time is the Shravana Putrada parana?

The fast is broken on Dwadashi morning, after Hari Vasara (13 Aug, 9:35 AM); in New Delhi the window is 13 Aug, 1:45 PM to 4:24 PM. If the morning slips by, wait until midday has passed, but break the fast before Dwadashi itself ends.

What is the Shravana Putrada Ekadashi katha?

King Mahijit of Mahishmati ruled well but had no son. His ministers sought out the sage Lomasha, who saw that in a past life the king, a poor merchant travelling thirsty on a Dwadashi, had driven a cow and her calf away from a pond to drink first. The remedy was for his subjects to keep this Ekadashi together and give him its merit; they did, and in time the queen bore a worthy heir. The full katha is above.

How is Shravana Putrada different from Pausha Putrada?

Both are Putrada and both are kept for a child, but they fall half a year apart: Shravana Putrada in the monsoon, around August, with King Mahijit's katha of the cow and calf; Pausha Putrada in winter, around January, with King Suketuman's katha of the lotus lake. Shravana's is also Pavitra Ekadashi in the South.

How should the Shravana Putrada vrat be kept?

Eat once on Dashami. On Ekadashi bathe, take the sankalp, naming the child or the hope you keep it for, and worship Vishnu or Bal Gopal with tulsi, yellow flowers and makhan-mishri; offer the pavitra thread if that is your custom. Read the katha, chant the Santana Gopala mantra, give water and fodder to a cow and break the fast in the parana window.

Which mantra should be chanted on Sawan Putrada Ekadashi?

Couples chant the Santana Gopala mantra, Om Devakisuta Govinda Vasudeva jagatpate, 108 times before Bal Gopal; everyone chants Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya as the day's japa. The Ekadashi sankalpa and parana verses open and close the fast. All are in the mantra section.

What can I eat on Shravana Putrada Ekadashi in the monsoon?

Freshly made phalahar suits the wet season best: fruit such as banana, pear and jamun, milk, makhana, sabudana khichdi and potato or arbi cooked with rock salt. Avoid food that has stood since the morning in the humidity, and leave grain, dal, onion and garlic for the parana.

Why does the Shravana Putrada katha mention a cow and her calf?

Because the king's childlessness was traced to a single act: in a past life, tired and thirsty, he drove a cow and her calf from a pond so that he could drink first. The katha's point is that a small unkindness to a mother and her young can weigh heavily, which is why many feed and water a cow and calf today.

Is Shravana Putrada Ekadashi connected with Raksha Bandhan?

Only by the calendar: it falls on the eleventh of the bright half of Shravana and Raksha Bandhan on the full moon four days later, so families keep the fast and then prepare for Rakhi in the same week.

What are the traditional upay of Shravana Putrada Ekadashi?

Water and fodder for a cow and her calf, the Santana Gopala mantra before Bal Gopal, keeping the fast together as a couple or a family, offering the pavitra thread where it is the custom, and gifts to children in need. They are prayers kept with faith, not guarantees, and no substitute for a doctor.
