Ratna calculator

Gemstone calculator (rashi ratna)

Enter your date, exact time and place of birth. The calculator finds your lagna and checks the lords of your 1st, 5th and 9th houses, the only planets a stone is chosen for, then names each stone they allow, why, and its caution. Blue Sapphire never comes first and always needs a trial.

Your birth details

Date, exact time and place of birth: the time sets your lagna, and so your 1st, 5th and 9th lords.

The lagna changes about every two hours, so the stones depend on the time. If the recorded time is approximate, read the answer as approximate too.

Your details are used to compute this result and are not saved. They are sent in the body of the request, never in the page address, and the page worked out from them is never cached or indexed, so nobody else receives your chart.

Calculator facts

Gemstone Calculator by Date of Birth

  • Your lagna and its 1st, 5th and 9th lords
  • Each stone with the reason it passed or was ruled out
  • Every caution the rule attaches, and the trial note
  • No stone at all, when that is the rule's answer

A stone is chosen for a planet, not for a sign: the tradition holds that a gemstone strengthens its planet, so it is given only to a planet that works for your chart. That is why the rule starts from your lagna and can rule a stone out.

Worked example (15 August 1990, 10:30, New Delhi): Virgo lagna: your lead stone is Diamond / White Sapphire, for Venus, lord of your 9th. Also passing the rule: Blue Sapphire (after a trial).

Diamond / White Sapphire (हीरा / सफेद पुखराज) — Venus

Venus rules your 9th house. It sits in your 11th house, not the 6th, 8th or 12th, so the rule keeps Diamond / White Sapphire.

The rule grades it: Highly Recommended.

Traditionally set in platinum or silver, worn on the middle finger and first put on on a Friday.

Blue Sapphire (नीलम) — Saturn

Saturn rules your 5th house. It sits in your 4th house, not the 6th, 8th or 12th, so the rule keeps Blue Sapphire.

The rule grades it: Optional (after a trial).

Traditionally set in silver or iron, worn on the middle finger and first put on on a Saturday.

Caution: Saturn also rules your 6th house. Many astrologers still recommend its stone for the 5th-house lordship, but consult an astrologer about your whole chart before wearing it. Blue Sapphire is traditionally tried for a few days before it is set in a ring, and taken off at once if anything feels wrong. Consult an astrologer before buying; never borrow to buy one.

Stones the rule ruled out

  • Mercury rules your 1st house (your Virgo lagna), so its stone is always considered. But it sits in your 12th house, and the rule never strengthens a planet placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th, so Emerald is ruled out for this chart.

How the gem rule chooses a stone

  1. Candidates. Only the lords of the 1st, 5th and 9th houses — the three trines. The lagna lord is always a candidate, whatever other house it also rules.
  2. Placement. A candidate sitting in the 6th, 8th or 12th house loses its stone, the lagna lord included. The exception is the yogakaraka, a 5th or 9th lord that also rules the 4th, 7th or 10th: it keeps its stone, with a caution.
  3. Double lordship. A 5th or 9th lord that also rules the 6th or 8th keeps its stone, with a caution to have the whole chart looked at before wearing it.
  4. Grade. The stones that pass are graded by the planet's strength index: a weak planet's stone is graded more useful, an already strong planet's optional.
  5. Blue Sapphire. Neelam is never the headline: it is listed last, as optional, and only after a trial of a few days.

Gemstones for each lagna

Your lagna fixes which planets rule your 1st, 5th and 9th houses, so each lagna has the same three candidate stones. Which of them survive depends on where those planets sit in your birth chart — which is why the calculator asks for your birth time.

Rashi ratna, lagna ratna and birthstone

Most “rashi ratna” tables give the stone of your Moon sign's lord, and a birthstone comes from the calendar alone. This calculator starts from your lagna, as the classical rule does, so its answer can differ from a rashi table — and it can say no stone at all. Our guide birthstone vs rashi ratna sets the three side by side. For a remedy without a stone, see the rudraksha calculator and the planet remedies; for your whole chart, the free kundli.

Gemstone calculator — questions

How does the gemstone calculator choose my stone?

It finds your lagna from your birth time and place, then looks only at the lords of your 1st, 5th and 9th houses. A lord sitting in the 6th, 8th or 12th house is ruled out, except the yogakaraka. The stones that pass are listed in the rule's order, the lagna lord's first, with Blue Sapphire always last.

What is my rashi ratna?

Most tables give the stone of the planet that rules your Moon sign. This calculator starts from your lagna instead, as the classical rule does, so its answer can differ from a rashi table, and it can say that no stone suits your chart.

Why did the calculator give me no stone?

Because each of your 1st, 5th and 9th lords sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, and the rule never strengthens a planet placed there. That is a real answer, not an error: free practices such as a graha's mantra need no stone.

Why is Blue Sapphire only offered after a trial?

Neelam is the stone the tradition handles with most care. Where it passes the rule it is listed after every other stone, marked optional, and traditionally worn for a few days before it is set in a ring, and taken off at once if anything feels wrong.

Do I need my exact birth time?

Yes. The lagna changes about every two hours, and your 1st, 5th and 9th lords change with it. If your recorded time is approximate, treat the answer as approximate and have it checked.

Can a gemstone guarantee success, money or good health?

No. A stone is a traditional remedy, not a treatment or an investment. It does not replace a doctor or financial advice, and you should never borrow to buy one or buy one out of fear.
