Tamil Calendar 2027 August — தமிழ் காலண்டர் 2027 ஆகஸ்ட்

The Tamil month is solar: Chithirai opens when the Sun enters Mesha in mid-April and each month lasts as long as the Sun spends in one sidereal sign — 29 to 32 days, not the 29.5 of a lunation. There is no paksha, no adhika month and no kshaya month, because none of those belong to a solar reckoning. The day a month begins follows the Tamil rule: a sankranti before sunset opens the month that same day, one after sunset opens it the next.

Tithi and nakshatra are read at sunrise at Chennai, which is the moment that names a Vedic day. Sunrise differs across India by well over an hour, so the day a tithi names can differ between two cities — the times on this page are this city's, and are computed from the Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the same engine the rest of the site uses. Festival days follow each observance's own deciding moment: pradosh for Deepavali, nishita for Shivaratri, madhyahna for Ganesh Chaturthi, and sunrise for the rest.
