This is the whole system. There is nothing else to it — look up each letter of your name, add the values, and reduce the total by adding its digits until one digit is left. Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are kept rather than reduced.

Two answers are usually offered. One is doctrinal and one is arithmetical, and only the second can be checked.
In Chaldean numerology 9 is treated as complete and sacred — the number that contains the other eight — and so it is held back from ordinary letters. It still turns up as a result, because any name whose letters add to 9, 18, 27 or 36 reduces to 9. What it never is, in this system, is an input.
Reducing a number by adding its digits is arithmetic in base nine. Adding 9 to any total leaves the reduced answer exactly where it was. So a letter worth 9 would be numerically invisible: you could delete it from the name and the final number would not move. Whether or not the Chaldean authors intended that, the system avoids a real defect by leaving 9 out.
Pythagorean does assign 9, to I and to R. Take the name MEERA. Pythagorean values are M 4, E 5, E 5, R 9, A 1, which is 24, and 2 plus 4 is 6. Now remove the R entirely: 4 plus 5 plus 5 plus 1 is 15, and 1 plus 5 is 6. The same answer. In Pythagorean numerology the letter R genuinely does nothing to the reduced total.
MEERA in Chaldean is M 4, E 5, E 5, R 2, A 1, which is 17, and 1 plus 7 is 8. Six under one system, eight under the other, and the entire difference is the single letter R — 9 in one table, 2 in the other. This is the honest reason the two systems disagree. It is not that one is measuring more carefully.
Once the letters are converted, the three name numbers are just three different subsets of the same list.
Staying with MEERA in Chaldean: the vowels E, E and A give 5 plus 5 plus 1, which is 11 — a master number, so it stands rather than reducing to 2. The consonants M and R give 4 plus 2, which is 6. The whole name gives 17, which reduces to 8. Soul urge 11, personality 6, expression 8.
Add your soul urge and your personality number, reduce the total, and you should land on your expression number: 11 plus 6 is 17, which reduces to 8. That works because every letter belongs to exactly one of the two halves. If it does not work for you, a letter has been mistyped or dropped somewhere.
Compare the two tables and they match on A, B, C, D, E, J, K, L, M and N, and differ on the other sixteen. A name built mostly from the first half of the alphabet will give similar answers either way; a name carrying R, S, T, Y, I or Q will not. These values are for the Latin alphabet, so a Devanagari or Tamil name has to be romanised first — and the spelling you pick decides the number. There is no correct transliteration to find. Use the spelling you actually write and sign, and note that a different official spelling elsewhere carries a different total.
