Karwa Chauth is not a Gregorian date. It is Krishna paksha tithi 4 of Kartika in the purnimanta reckoning, and the Gregorian day it lands on moves by up to a month between years because twelve lunations fall about eleven days short of a solar year.

The fast ends at moonrise — 8:11 PM in New Delhi.

That figure belongs to New Delhi and to nowhere else. Moonrise swings by well over an hour between the east and the west of the country on the same evening, which is far more than sunrise does, so a single national moonrise time — the thing most pages print — is wrong almost everywhere it is read. Change the city and this number, and sometimes the date itself, changes with it.

The two instants above are the astronomy and are not in dispute. The day is an interpretation of them: this observance is decided at moonrise, so it belongs to the day whose moonrise the tithi carries — not simply to the day the tithi begins.

Karwa Chauth muhurat

Karwa Chauth is the fast married women keep from sunrise to moonrise on the fourth day of the dark fortnight of Kartika, for their husbands' long life: it begins with sargi before dawn, has its puja and katha at dusk, and ends when the moon is seen through a sieve. Karwa Chauth 2026 is on Thursday, 29 October 2026 in New Delhi. The fast runs 6:30 AM to 8:11 PM; the puja muhurat is 5:38 PM to 6:45 PM, and the moon rises at 8:11 PM.

Fasting time (sunrise to moonrise)6:30 AM to 8:11 PMFrom sunrise until the Moon rises in this city.

From sunrise to moonrise in your city — the length of the fast. Sargi is finished before it starts, and the fast is broken only after the moon has been seen and offered arghya.

Karwa Chauth puja muhurat5:38 PM to 6:45 PMThe sandhya after sunset: three ghatis, a tenth of the daylight.

The evening window from sunset, about an hour and a quarter long, for the sandhya puja: the worship of Gauri with Shiva, Ganesha and Kartikeya, the katha, the passing of the thalis and the giving of the baya. Most women's groups meet in it.

Moonrise8:11 PMThe first moonrise after this sunrise and before the next.

The moment the fast is waiting for. Moonrise differs by more than an hour across India, so go by your own city; offer arghya once the moon is clear of the horizon or buildings.

Brahma Muhurta (sargi)4:47 AM to 5:39 AMThe 14th of the night's fifteen muhurtas, ending one muhurta before sunrise.

The two muhurtas before sunrise — the traditional time to wake, bathe and eat the sargi, with enough water, so that it is finished before the fast begins at sunrise.

Sunrise6:30 AMThe upper edge of the Sun on the horizon, with refraction.

The fast begins at sunrise; take the sankalp after your morning bath.

Sunset5:38 PMThe upper edge of the Sun leaving the horizon.

Puja vidhi · step by step at home

Karwa Chauth puja vidhi

  1. The day before

Apply mehndi, keep the karwa, thali and puja items ready, and plan the sargi. In Punjabi homes the mother-in-law sends the sargi and the shringar; a woman living away from her in-laws prepares her own.

  2. Sargi before dawn

Wake in the Brahma Muhurta, bathe if you like, and eat the sargi: pheni or sevaiyan in milk, fruit, dry fruit, mathri, a paratha, and plenty of water or coconut water. Finish before sunrise.

  3. Sankalp at sunrise

After the morning bath, hold water, rice and a flower and take the sankalp of the Karaka Chaturthi vrat — for the family's happiness, good fortune and your husband's long life — and decide how you will fast: without water (nirjala), or with fruit and water if your health needs it.

  4. The day

Rest, keep calm and avoid heavy work. By Punjabi custom women don't sew, spin or cut cloth on this day. In the afternoon, dress in bridal or festive clothes, with the solah shringar, and prepare the thali.

  5. Set up the puja

On a chowki or the wall, place the Karwa Mata picture or calendar, or make a small Gaur Mata of clay or cow dung, with Shiva, Ganesha and Kartikeya. Fill the karwa with water (some fill it with wheat), cover it, put a lamp or sweets on the lid, and keep the thali ready: roli, rice, sindoor, a diya, sweets, fruit, a lota of water and the sieve.

  6. Evening puja

In the puja muhurat, sit with the women of the family or neighbourhood. Light the diya, worship Ganesha first, then Gauri with roli, rice, sindoor, flowers and shringar items, and Shiva and Kartikeya; recite the Gauri prayer.

  7. Hear the katha

Holding a few grains of wheat or rice, listen to the Karwa Chauth katha, the story of Veeravati, often followed by the Ganesh katha, told by an elder or read from the booklet; then offer the grains.

  8. Pass the thalis (feri)

In Punjabi tradition the women pass their thalis round the circle seven times, singing the old Karwa song of the day's do's and don'ts.

  9. Give the baya

Give the baya — sweets, dry fruit, a sari or suit, some money and a filled karwa — to your mother-in-law or an elder married woman, and touch her feet for her blessing.

  10. Arghya to the moon

When the moon rises, go to an open place with the thali. Offer arghya from the karwa or lota — water with a little milk and rice — to the moon, with roli and rice, saying the Chandra shloka, and pray for your husband's long life.

  11. See the moon through the sieve

With the diya on the thali, look at the moon through the sieve, then at your husband's face through the same sieve.

  12. Break the fast

Your husband gives you the first sip of water and a bite of sweet; touch his feet and your elders' feet for blessings. Then eat a light meal first and the festive dinner after; don't rush a heavy meal after a long fast.

Katha · the story and its meaning

Karwa Chauth katha and significance

The katha

Veeravati was the only sister of seven brothers. She kept her first Karwa Chauth at her parents' home and, by evening, was faint with hunger and thirst. Unable to bear it, her brothers lit a fire behind a hill — in other tellings one climbed a tree with a lamp in a sieve — and told her the moon had risen. She offered arghya to the false moon and broke her fast.

At once news came that her husband had died. Grief-stricken, she went to him and refused to let his body be taken away. In some tellings Indrani, the queen of the gods, tells her to keep every Chauth fast for a year; in others it is Parvati who helps her win him back. She sat by him through the year, keeping every Chauth fast, and when she kept the next Karwa Chauth with complete devotion, her husband's life was restored. The story is why the moon is checked through a sieve and the fast never broken early.

Another katha tells of a devoted wife named Karva, whose husband was seized by a crocodile while bathing in a river. She bound the crocodile with a cotton thread and went to Yama, the lord of death, to demand justice; fearing the curse of so true a wife, Yama sent the crocodile to its end and granted her husband a long life. The karwa pot of the puja carries her name.

Why it is kept

Karwa Chauth joins two observances: the Sankashti Chaturthi of Ganesha, on the fourth day of the waning moon, and the married woman's prayer to Gauri, the ideal wife of Shiva, for her husband's long life. The karwa — a pot of water — is both the vessel of the moon's arghya and a symbol of plenty.

It falls in the season after the harvest, when, it is said, women of the north once made a festival of their friendships and of their bond with their husbands' families: the sargi from the mother-in-law, the baya in return, and the evening circle of women are as central as the fast itself.

Today many husbands keep the fast too, and unmarried women keep it for a hoped-for or promised partner, breaking it on the stars or the moon. It falls on the Chaturthi after Sharad Purnima, about ten days before Diwali.

Upay · traditional practice

Karwa Chauth upay: traditional remedies

Offer shringar to Gauri

Offering sindoor, bangles and the other shringar items to Gauri, and giving them afterwards to a married woman, is the traditional way of praying for an unbroken married life.

Keep the puja sindoor

Many women keep the sindoor offered to Gauri and wear it the next day, a custom held to bring saubhagya, the good fortune of a married woman.

Honour the mother-in-law

Giving the baya with respect and touching your mother-in-law's feet is believed to bring the blessings of the household's elders — a custom of the day as important as the fast.

Chant to the Moon

In jyotish the Moon governs the mind; chanting 'Om Som Somaya Namah' while waiting for moonrise is a traditional practice for patience, calm and harmony at home.

Give to a married woman in need

Gifting bangles, sindoor, a sari or a meal to a married woman who cannot afford them is a traditional act of daan on Karwa Chauth.

Fast together

Many couples now keep the fast together; the custom is a prayer for each other's long life, and sharing it is in its spirit.

The custom, in short

Karwa Chauth do's and don'ts

Do

  • Eat a nourishing sargi with plenty of water before sunrise.
  • Rest during the day and avoid heavy work in the sun.
  • Check the moonrise for your own city, not a national time.
  • Hear the katha and give the baya to an elder woman.
  • Break the fast slowly — water first, then a light meal.
  • Keep a phalahar or water fast instead of a nirjala one if your health asks for it.

Don't

  • Don't keep a waterless fast if you are pregnant, nursing, diabetic, on medication or unwell; ask your doctor and keep a lighter vrat.
  • Don't break the fast before the moon has been offered arghya, unless you feel unwell.
  • Don't trust a single moonrise time for all of India; it varies by city.
  • By Punjabi custom, don't sew, spin or cut cloth on the day.
  • Many families avoid black and white clothes on Karwa Chauth; red and pink are preferred.
  • Don't leave the lit diya on the terrace unattended.

Across India

Karwa Chauth customs and food

By region

Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh
Sargi from the mother-in-law, the evening circle with the feri of thalis and the Karwa song, the baya in return, and the katha of Veeravati; the katha is also told in Punjabi.
Rajasthan
Women worship Chauth Mata — the Chauth Mata temple at Barwara is a pilgrimage for the day — and the Gaur Mata of the puja is often made of clay.
Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh
Women paint the Karwa scene on the wall with geru and rice paste — the moon, the sun, Karwa Mata and the seven brothers — or put up a printed Karwa calendar, and fill the karwa with wheat in many homes.
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
Atla Taddi, a similar moonrise fast for married women and girls, is kept a day earlier, on the Tritiya, and ends with dosas (atlu) offered to Gauri.
Elsewhere in India and abroad
Not traditional in the south, west or east, Karwa Chauth is now kept by North Indian families everywhere, and its rituals are adapted to apartment terraces and video calls with distant husbands.

Bhog, prasad and fasting food

  • Pheni or sevaiyan in milk The heart of the sargi: fine vermicelli soaked in sweetened milk, filling and hydrating.
  • Mathri Crisp, savoury biscuits for the sargi, the thali and the baya.
  • Fruit, dry fruit and coconut water Part of the sargi; coconut water helps through a dry day.
  • Paratha Many sargi trays include a paratha with curd for a longer-lasting meal.
  • Water and a sweet The first sip and bite after the moon, from the husband's hand.
  • A festive dinner: puri, sabzi, kheer Eaten after a light start; many families keep it sattvik.

Every row is computed for New Delhi from the same ephemeris, not looked up. Sunrise decides which day a tithi names, and sunrise differs across India by more than an hour, so a date computed for Delhi can be a day out elsewhere.

Why calendars disagree about this date

In 2026, for New Delhi:

  • Some calendars give a longer puja window, a tenth of the night after sunset, to 6:56 PM. The time here is the evening sandhya of three day-ghatis, a tenth of the daylight, to 6:45 PM.
  • Some calendars print moonrise about 5 minutes later, at 8:16 PM: the moment the centre of the Moon reaches the horizon, with no allowance for refraction. The time here is when its upper edge first shows, which is when it can be seen.

There is no single authority that settles a Hindu festival date, and the divergence is genuine rather than sloppy. Three causes account for almost all of it.

  1. A tithi rarely starts at sunrise. One that is running at the deciding moment on two days — or on none — is claimed by both days under different rules.
  2. Month reckoning. North India runs purnimanta, the south and west amanta. The same dark fortnight carries different month names in the two, so an observance defined as "krishna X of month Y" can land a full lunation apart.
  3. Which moment decides. Most vratas belong to the day whose sunrise carries the tithi, but not all: this one is decided at moonrise. Almanacs that apply the sunrise rule to everything move several festivals by a day.

So this page shows its working. If your pandit or your family almanac gives a different day, the instants above will usually show you exactly why — and that is more useful than a date asserted without one.

Common questions

When is Karwa Chauth?

Karwa Chauth 2026 is on Thursday, 29 October 2026 in New Delhi. The fast runs 6:30 AM to 8:11 PM; the evening puja muhurat is 5:38 PM to 6:45 PM, and the moon rises at 8:11 PM.

Why does another calendar give a different Karwa Chauth date?

Three honest reasons. The tithi can be running at the deciding moment on two days or on none. North India reckons the month purnimanta and the south and west amanta, which names the same krishna fortnight differently. And almanacs differ on which moment of the day decides an observance. The instants above are the astronomy; the day is an interpretation of them.

What time is moonrise for Karwa Chauth in New Delhi?

In New Delhi the moon rises at 8:11 PM on Thursday, 29 October 2026. Moonrise varies by more than an hour across India, and buildings or haze can delay the sighting by a few minutes, so go by your own city and wait until the moon is clear.

What is the Karwa Chauth puja time?

In New Delhi the puja muhurat is 5:38 PM to 6:45 PM, the window after sunset in which the Gauri puja is done and the katha heard. The fast is broken later, after moonrise at 8:11 PM.

What is sargi, and when should it be eaten?

Sargi is the pre-dawn meal, traditionally sent by the mother-in-law, that carries a woman through the fast: pheni or sevaiyan in milk, fruit, dry fruit, mathri, a paratha and plenty of water. Eat it in the Brahma Muhurta, 4:47 AM to 5:39 AM, and finish before sunrise at 6:30 AM.

What is the Karwa Chauth vrat katha?

The katha most told is Veeravati's: her seven brothers tricked her into breaking her first Karwa Chauth fast with a false moon, her husband died, and after a year of devotion and a fully kept fast the Goddess restored him. Another katha tells of Karva, who bound a crocodile and won her husband's life from Yama. Both are given above.

How is the Karwa Chauth puja done?

After sargi and a morning sankalp, fast through the day. At dusk, set up Gauri with Shiva, Ganesha and Kartikeya, fill the karwa, worship Ganesha and then Gauri with roli, rice, sindoor and shringar, hear the katha, pass the thalis and give the baya. Once the moon has risen, offer it arghya from the karwa, look at it through the sieve with the diya on the thali, then look at your husband through the sieve. He gives you the first sip of water and a bite of sweet; touch his and your elders' feet, then eat a light meal before dinner.

What if the moon is hidden by clouds?

Wait a while; it often appears. If it stays hidden, many families offer arghya facing the moon's direction (the east) at the computed moonrise for New Delhi, 8:11 PM, and break the fast; others look at the moon on a live video from a clearer city. Follow your family's custom.

Can unmarried girls keep the Karwa Chauth fast?

Yes, many do, for a good husband or for a fiancé. The custom is usually gentler: no sargi from in-laws, a puja with the other women, and the fast broken on seeing the stars or the moon, often without a sieve. There is no fixed rule; follow your family.

How should a woman on her period keep Karwa Chauth?

Customs differ. Many families let her keep the fast and hear the katha but ask another woman to touch the idol and do the physical puja for her; she still offers arghya to the moon. Many families no longer keep any restriction. Follow your family's custom and your comfort.

Can a pregnant woman keep the Karwa Chauth fast?

Why is Karwa Chauth celebrated?

Married women keep it to pray for their husbands' long life and the family's happiness, worshipping Gauri, Shiva and Ganesha and offering arghya to the moon. It is also a festival of women's bonds — the sargi from the mother-in-law, the baya in return and the evening circle.

Which aarti is sung on Karwa Chauth?

Many families sing the aarti of the Karwa Mata printed in their katha booklet; others sing Shiva's aarti, 'Om Jai Shiv Omkara', given above, at the Shiva-Parvati puja, or end with 'Om Jai Jagdish Hare'. There is no single scriptural aarti; follow your family's.

Does Bhadra affect the Karwa Chauth puja?

If your family's priest advises avoiding Bhadra for the puja, the day's Bhadra span is listed in the panchang for your city.
