Lunar month
Kartika (purnimanta) · Ashwin (amanta)

The two lunar-month names above are both correct. The same fortnight carries different month names in the purnimanta reckoning used across North India and the amanta reckoning used in the south and west — which is one of the honest reasons two calendars can disagree about a date.

Amavasya is the new moon — the fifteenth tithi of the dark fortnight, and the day most shraddha and pitru observances are kept. The tithi's start and end are shown alongside the day it names.

  • Every date and time on this page is computed for New Delhi, not copied from a calendar
  • The tithi's own start and end are shown, so you can check the day yourself
  • Sunrise decides the day, and sunrise differs across India by over an hour

Every Amavasya of the year

12 fall this year. The count moves between years: twelve lunations fall about eleven days short of a solar year, and an adhika (extra) month adds more.

Times are local to New Delhi. A row marked kshaya tithi is one the tithi never carried at sunrise — it began after one and ended before the next, and the observance is kept on the day it ran through. A row marked also kept the next day is one where the tithi spans two sunrises, so two traditions genuinely take two different days.

Common questions

When is the next Amavasya?

Monday, 9 November 2026. The tithi runs from 8 Nov, 11:29 AM to 9 Nov, 12:32 PM in New Delhi.

Why does my calendar show a different Amavasya date?

Because a tithi rarely begins and ends at sunrise. When it is running at sunrise on two days, or on none, traditions divide: some take the day the tithi touches sunrise, others the day it begins. The start and end instants above are the astronomy and are not in dispute — the day is an interpretation of them, and this page names the one it used.

How many Amavasya days are there in a year?

12 fall in 2026 for New Delhi. The count moves between years because twelve lunations fall about eleven days short of a solar year, and an adhika (extra) month adds more.
