A tithi is a lunar day: the time the Moon takes to gain twelve degrees on the Sun. Thirty make a lunar month, and because a tithi lasts anywhere from about 20 to 27 hours, a birthday kept by tithi moves on the Gregorian calendar from year to year.
Worked example (15 August 1990, 10:30, New Delhi): At 10:30 on 15 August 1990 in New Delhi the tithi was Krishna Dashami (tithi 25 of 30), in the Bhadrapada month by the purnimanta reckoning (Shravana by the amanta), Vikram Samvat 2047; the Moon was in Rohini.

At 10:30 on 15 August 1990 in New Delhi the tithi was Krishna Dashami (tithi 25 of 30), in the Bhadrapada month by the purnimanta reckoning (Shravana by the amanta), Vikram Samvat 2047; the Moon was in Rohini.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Tithi | Krishna Dashami (25 of 30) |
| The tithi runs | 15 August 1990, 05:55 to 16 August 1990, 03:35 |
| Paksha | Krishna (waning Moon) |
| Nakshatra | Rohini, pada 3 |
| Weekday (sunrise to sunrise) | Wednesday |
| Sunrise | 15 August 1990, 05:49 |
| Month (purnimanta, North India) | Bhadrapada |
| Month (amanta, South and West India) | Shravana |
| Vikram Samvat | 2047 Svabhanu |
| Shaka Samvat | 1912 Pramoda |
At that day's sunrise the tithi was Krishna Navami, so a panchang names the day by it; at the time you entered Krishna Dashami was running, and the tithi birthday is worked out from that.
Your tithi birthday
Your tithi birthday, Shravana Krishna Dashami (the purnimanta calendar calls it Bhadrapada Krishna Dashami), next falls on Friday, 27 August 2027 (by sunrise at New Delhi).
This year's fell on Sunday, 6 September 2026.

The tithi birthday is the day whose sunrise falls in your birth tithi in the same lunar month — the udaya tithi rule vrats are kept by. A birth in an adhika month is kept in the regular month of the same name. In another city, with another sunrise, the date can differ by a day.
How the tithi is calculated
- The Moon's lead. At the moment asked, the distance the Moon is ahead of the Sun, both in the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa).
- Twelve degrees each. Every 12 degrees is a tithi: 0 to 12 is Shukla Pratipada, 168 to 180 Purnima and 348 to 360 Amavasya.
- Start and end. The instants the tithi began and ends are found to the minute, in the place's time zone.
- Month and samvat. The month is the lunation from one new moon to the next, adhika months included; Vikram Samvat turns at purnimanta Chaitra and Shaka Samvat at amanta Chaitra.
Udaya tithi
A panchang names a day by the tithi running at sunrise, even if it changes at noon. So the tithi of a birth moment and the tithi a panchang prints for that day can differ; this calculator gives both.

Tithi calculator — questions
What is a tithi?
A tithi is a lunar day: the time the Moon takes to gain 12 degrees on the Sun. A lunar month has 30, 15 in the bright half (Shukla paksha) ending with Purnima and 15 in the dark half (Krishna paksha) ending with Amavasya. A tithi lasts roughly 20 to 27 hours, so it rarely matches a calendar day.
How do I find the tithi I was born on?
Enter your date, time and place of birth. The calculator gives the tithi running at that moment. If you leave the time out it gives the tithi at that day's sunrise, the one a printed panchang gives the day; a birth later in the day can fall in the next tithi, and the page says when it changed.
What is a tithi birthday?
The day each year when your birth tithi returns in the same lunar month, such as Shravana Krishna Dashami. Many families keep the birthday, and its puja, by this date rather than the Gregorian one. It moves by up to about three weeks between years.
How is the date of the tithi birthday chosen?
It is the day whose sunrise falls in your tithi, in the same lunar month: the udaya tithi rule that vrats are kept by. If the tithi touches no sunrise that month, the day it runs through is taken. A birth in an adhika month is kept in the regular month of the same name.
Why are two month names shown?
Amanta months end at the new moon and are used in the South and West; purnimanta months end at the full moon and are used in the North. In the Krishna paksha the purnimanta month already carries the next month's name, so one day can be Shravana Krishna Dashami or Bhadrapada Krishna Dashami.
Does the place matter?
Yes. A tithi begins at the same instant everywhere, but the clock time depends on the time zone and the sunrise that names the day depends on the place. A tithi birthday can fall a day apart in two cities.
