The classical texts also note friction or distance with the father — or a father who is authoritative and influential.
Long journeys, higher learning, law and religious or public institutions suit it; a respectful but independent relationship with the father is its constructive form.
Which sign falls in the 9th house depends on the lagna, and the sign changes Sun's strength there. For a Leo (Simha) lagna this house holds Aries (Mesha), where Sun is exalted; for a Aquarius (Kumbha) lagna it holds Libra (Tula), where it is debilitated.

Sun mahadasha runs 6 years. This placement speaks most clearly then — in Sun's own mahadasha, in its antardashas inside other mahadashas, and in the dasha of the lord of the 9th house. Saturn's and Jupiter's transits over this house, or over the planet itself, wake it too.

- Chant the Sun mantra: Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah. Sit facing east after sunrise — Sunday is the strongest day for it. Chant 2 malas a day (216 repetitions), keeping count on a 108-bead mala. Keep it up for 40 days without a break — that completes the traditional 7,000.
- Give a Sun donation. Give wheat, jaggery, copper on Sunday, before noon. Offer it to an elderly man or a father figure, or to anyone in genuine need. Give quietly, in person, without expecting thanks.
- Daily practice for Sun. Offer water to the Sun at sunrise; respect your father and those in authority. Keep it up every day for 40 days — consistency is the remedy.
