Computed for New Delhi

The date in New Delhi

Tuesday, 20 April 2027

Hanuman Jayanti is not a Gregorian date. It is Shukla paksha tithi 15 of Chaitra in the amanta reckoning, and the Gregorian day it lands on moves by up to a month between years because twelve lunations fall about eleven days short of a solar year.

Sunrise in New Delhi falls at 5:50 AM on that day, and that is the instant the tithi has to be running at for the day to carry the observance. It is computed for this city rather than assumed, because it is what decides the date.

The two instants above are the astronomy and are not in dispute. The day is an interpretation of them: this observance is decided at sunrise, so it belongs to the day whose sunrise the tithi carries — not simply to the day the tithi begins.

Meaning and observance

When is Hanuman's birthday celebrated?

Hanuman Jayanti is the observance commonly described as Hanuman's birthday. This page calculates the Chaitra Shukla Purnima date used across much of North India.

  • Regional traditions may observe Hanuman's birth on a different lunar date, so a local temple calendar can legitimately disagree.
  • The computed tithi start and end above show which rule produced this page's date.
  • Changing the city can change boundary times and, near an anchor boundary, the observance date.

In New Delhi it falls on Tuesday, 20 April 2027; many temples celebrate the birth around sunrise (5:50 AM), and Purnima runs 4:51 AM to 3:57 AM (21 Apr). Several regions keep a Hanuman Jayanti of their own on other dates, explained below.

Puja vidhi · step by step at home

Hanuman Jayanti puja vidhi

  1. Rise before dawn

Wake in the Brahma muhurta, bathe and wear clean red or saffron clothes, and keep the day calm, sattvic and celibate, as Hanuman's worship asks.

  2. Sankalp and altar

Take the sankalp of the fast and puja. Place a picture or idol of Hanuman, ideally with Rama and Sita, on a red cloth, and worship Ganesha and then Rama first; devotion to Rama is what pleases Hanuman most.

  3. The birth at sunrise

Where the family or temple keeps the janmotsav at sunrise, rock a small cradle, shower flowers and sing the aarti as the sun rises.

  4. Sindoor and chola

Offer sindoor: at temples, the chola of sindoor mixed with jasmine oil is applied to the idol with a new janeu and a red cloth; at home, a tilak of sindoor on the idol or picture is enough.

  5. Offerings

Offer red flowers or a garland, tulsi leaves, a lamp of ghee or jasmine oil and incense, and naivedya of boondi or besan laddoos, jaggery with roasted gram, bananas or a sweet paan beeda.

  6. Hanuman Chalisa and Sundar Kand

Recite the Hanuman Chalisa, once, eleven times or more, or the Sundar Kand of the Ramcharitmanas, which tells of his leap to Lanka; many temples hold the path through the day.

  7. Aarti

Sing 'Aarti Kije Hanuman Lala Ki' with a ghee lamp and camphor, and take the blessing of the flame.

  8. Prasad and seva

Share the prasad, give food or water to those in need, and join the temple's bhandara or shobha yatra if there is one.

  9. End the fast

Those fasting live on fruit and milk through the day and break the fast after the evening aarti, or the next morning, as the family's custom says.

Katha · the story and its meaning

Hanuman Jayanti katha and significance

The katha

Hanuman's mother Anjana, an apsara born on earth as a vanara, was the wife of the vanara chief Kesari. In the Valmiki Ramayana, Jambavan reminds Hanuman that Vayu, the wind god, fathered him, which is why he is called Pavanputra and Maruti; the Shiva Purana counts him as an avatar of Shiva, and many devotees honour him as the eleventh Rudra.

As an infant he saw the rising sun and, taking it for a ripe fruit, leapt to seize it. Indra struck him with the thunderbolt and injured his jaw, hanu, which gave him his name. When the grieving Vayu withdrew the air from the world, the gods revived the child and blessed him with strength, speed and protection from every weapon, and in the Ramcharitmanas Sita later blesses him to be ageless and immortal; tradition counts him among the chiranjivis, the ever-living.

He met Rama near Kishkindha and became his messenger and devotee: he leapt the ocean to find Sita in Lanka, burned the city, and carried the mountain of healing herbs to bring Lakshmana back to life. His birthday comes on the full moon of Chaitra, less than a week after Ram Navami.

Why it is kept

Hanuman stands for strength joined to humility: the mightiest of beings called himself only Rama's servant. Devotees turn to him as Sankat Mochan, the remover of troubles, for courage, freedom from fear and the strength to finish hard tasks, and his Chalisa is among the most recited prayers in India. Tradition holds that wherever Rama's name is sung, Hanuman is present.

Some now prefer the name Hanuman Janmotsav, reasoning that Hanuman, a chiranjivi, is still living; Hanuman Jayanti is the long-established name, and both mean the celebration of his birth. Several regions keep his birth on other days as well, so his worship runs from Chaitra into the winter months.

Every row is computed for New Delhi from the same ephemeris, not looked up. Sunrise decides which day a tithi names, and sunrise differs across India by more than an hour, so a date computed for Delhi can be a day out elsewhere.

Why calendars disagree about this date

There is no single authority that settles a Hindu festival date, and the divergence is genuine rather than sloppy. Three causes account for almost all of it.

  1. A tithi rarely starts at sunrise. One that is running at the deciding moment on two days — or on none — is claimed by both days under different rules.
  2. Month reckoning. North India runs purnimanta, the south and west amanta. The same dark fortnight carries different month names in the two, so an observance defined as "krishna X of month Y" can land a full lunation apart.
  3. Which moment decides. Most vratas belong to the day whose sunrise carries the tithi, but not all: this one is decided at sunrise. Almanacs that apply the sunrise rule to everything move several festivals by a day.

So this page shows its working. If your pandit or your family almanac gives a different day, the instants above will usually show you exactly why — and that is more useful than a date asserted without one.

Common questions

When is Hanuman Jayanti?

In New Delhi, Hanuman Jayanti is on Tuesday, 20 April 2027, the Purnima of Chaitra; Purnima runs 4:51 AM to 3:57 AM (21 Apr), and the festival is kept on the day it holds at sunrise. Some regions keep Hanuman Jayanti on other dates; they are explained in the questions below.

Why does another calendar give a different Hanuman Jayanti date?

Three honest reasons. The tithi can be running at the deciding moment on two days or on none. North India reckons the month purnimanta and the south and west amanta, which names the same krishna fortnight differently. And almanacs differ on which moment of the day decides an observance. The instants above are the astronomy; the day is an interpretation of them.

What is the Hanuman Jayanti puja time?

There is no single classical muhurat. Tradition in Maharashtra and many temples places the birth at sunrise (5:50 AM), and kirtans begin in the Brahma muhurta (4:22 AM to 5:06 AM); the main puja is done in the morning, and those who time it use one of the day's good choghadiyas (Chal: 9:05 AM to 10:43 AM; Labh: 10:43 AM to 12:20 PM; Amrit: 12:20 PM to 1:57 PM; Shubh: 3:35 PM to 5:12 PM).

What is Hanuman Jayanti, and why is it celebrated?

It is the birthday of Hanuman, son of Anjana and Kesari and of Vayu, the wind god, Rama's devoted messenger who found Sita in Lanka and saved Lakshmana's life. Devotees celebrate him as Sankat Mochan, the remover of troubles, and ask for courage, strength and freedom from fear.

Is it Hanuman Jayanti or Hanuman Janmotsav?

Both names mean the same festival, the celebration of Hanuman's birth, on Tuesday, 20 April 2027 in New Delhi. Some prefer Janmotsav, birth festival, because tradition holds Hanuman to be a chiranjivi, still living, while Jayanti is the older and more widely used name.

Why do different regions keep different Hanuman Jayanti dates?

Traditions differ on the day of his birth. Most of North India keeps Chaitra Purnima; Hanuman Garhi in Ayodhya and some other traditions keep Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi, the eve of Diwali; Telangana and Andhra Pradesh keep Vaishakha Krishna Dashami as Pedda Hanuman Jayanti; Karnataka keeps Margashirsha Shukla Trayodashi; Tamil Nadu keeps the new moon of Margazhi; and Odisha keeps Pana Sankranti. This page computes the Chaitra Purnima date.

Is Hanuman Jayanti in December?

In the South, yes: Karnataka keeps Hanumad Vratam on Margashirsha Shukla Trayodashi, usually in December, and Tamil Nadu keeps Hanumath Jayanthi on the new moon of Margazhi, in December or January. The Chaitra Purnima Hanuman Jayanti of the North, which this page computes, is on Tuesday, 20 April 2027 in New Delhi.

When is Hanuman Jayanti in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana?

Twice: Chaitra Purnima, Tuesday, 20 April 2027 in New Delhi, is Chinna Hanuman Jayanti, when devotees begin the Hanuman deeksha, and Pedda Hanuman Jayanti, the main festival there, falls on Vaishakha Krishna Dashami, about forty days later, when the deeksha ends. This page computes the Chaitra Purnima date; check a Telugu panchangam for the Dashami.

How is Hanuman Jayanti puja done at home?

Bathe before dawn, set up a picture of Hanuman with Rama and Sita on a red cloth and worship Ganesha and Rama first. Offer sindoor, red flowers, tulsi, a lamp and naivedya of laddoos or jaggery with gram, recite the Hanuman Chalisa or the Sundar Kand, sing the aarti and share the prasad.

How is the chola of sindoor offered to Hanuman?

At temples, the chola is sindoor mixed with jasmine oil, applied to the idol after its bath, with a new janeu and a red cloth; priests often do it on the devotee's behalf. At home, a tilak of sindoor and a lamp of jasmine oil are enough. A folk story says Hanuman covered himself in sindoor after Sita told him she wore it for Rama's long life.

Which aarti is sung on Hanuman Jayanti?

'Aarti Kije Hanuman Lala Ki' is the aarti sung in homes and temples, given in full above with its transliteration. It is sung with a ghee lamp and camphor after the puja, and many devotees follow it with the Hanuman Chalisa.

Which mantra should I chant on Hanuman Jayanti?

The Hanuman Chalisa is the most loved recitation. For japa, 'Om Ham Hanumate Namah', 108 times, is common, and 'Manojavam', from the Rama Raksha Stotra, is said before a journey or a difficult task; the texts are given above.

What should I do on Hanuman Jayanti?

Rise early and keep the day sattvic, worship Rama and Hanuman together, offer sindoor and a lamp, recite the Chalisa or the Sundar Kand, and serve others with food or water. Many also start a vow of Hanuman worship on Tuesdays or Saturdays from this day.

How is the Hanuman Jayanti fast kept?

Devotees fast from sunrise on fruit and milk, or water alone if they are able, and break the fast after the evening aarti or the next morning. Meat, eggs, onion, garlic and alcohol are avoided; the ill, the elderly and pregnant women can keep a lighter fast.

What is the Hanuman deeksha?

In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh many devotees take a deeksha, a vow of up to forty-one days, from Chinna Hanuman Jayanti on Chaitra Purnima to Pedda Hanuman Jayanti on Vaishakha Krishna Dashami. They wear saffron, keep celibacy and a sattvic diet and worship daily, and end the vow at a Hanuman temple such as Kondagattu.

Is Hanuman Jayanti a holiday?

It is not a national public holiday, and only some states and employers give the day off; banks follow the RBI's state-wise lists, so check that year's official lists. This page computes the festival date, Tuesday, 20 April 2027 in New Delhi, not holiday schedules.
