What dignity means

Dignity describes how comfortably a graha operates in the sign it occupies. The same planet behaves differently depending on where it sits — confident and effective in some signs, constrained and awkward in others.

The useful analogy is context rather than quality. A graha in exaltation is a person working in their own field with their own tools; the same person in debilitation is competent but working in an unfamiliar setting where their usual methods do not fit. Nothing about the person changed.

Dignity is one of the first things checked when reading any placement, because it modifies everything else — a well-dignified graha in a difficult house often outperforms a debilitated one in a favourable house.

The exaltation and debilitation table

Exaltation (uccha) and debilitation (neecha) are always exactly opposite: 180° apart.

GrahaExalted inDeep exaltationDebilitated in
SunMesha (Aries)10°Tula (Libra)
MoonVrishabha (Taurus)Vrischika (Scorpio)
MarsMakara (Capricorn)28°Karka (Cancer)
MercuryKanya (Virgo)15°Meena (Pisces)
JupiterKarka (Cancer)Makara (Capricorn)
VenusMeena (Pisces)27°Kanya (Virgo)
SaturnTula (Libra)20°Mesha (Aries)

The deep exaltation degree is the exact point of maximum strength. A Sun at 10° Mesha is at its absolute peak; at 29° Mesha it is still exalted but well past it. The corresponding deep debilitation sits at the same degree in the opposite sign — a Sun at 10° Tula is at its lowest point.

Mercury is the one anomaly: it is exalted in Kanya, which it also rules. No other graha is both.

Rahu and Ketu are not in the table because the tradition does not agree on them. Various texts give Rahu exaltation in Vrishabha, Mithuna or Kanya, and Ketu correspondingly opposite. There is no settled classical position, and any source presenting one as definitive is picking a school without telling you.

The full dignity scale

Exaltation and debilitation are the endpoints of a longer scale used in practice:

  • Exalted (uccha) — maximum ease.
  • Moolatrikona — a specific degree range within a graha's own sign, considered nearly as strong as exaltation. The Sun's is 0°–20° Simha; Jupiter's 0°–10° Dhanu.
  • Own sign (swakshetra) — strong and settled.
  • Friend's sign — comfortable.
  • Neutral sign — unremarkable.
  • Enemy's sign — strained.
  • Debilitated (neecha) — least supported.

Most placements land in the middle of this scale, not at the extremes. Roughly one graha in twelve is exalted and one in twelve debilitated, so a chart with several of either is genuinely unusual.

Neecha bhanga — cancellation of debilitation

This is the rule that changes debilitation from a verdict into a starting condition, and it is the section most popular readings omit.

Neecha bhanga means the debilitation is cancelled. The commonly accepted conditions:

  • The ruler of the debilitation sign is in a kendra from the ascendant or the Moon.
  • The graha that would be exalted in that same sign is in a kendra. A debilitated Sun in Tula is cancelled if Saturn — exalted in Tula — sits in a kendra.
  • The debilitated graha is aspected by its dispositor or by an exalted graha.
  • The debilitated graha is itself in a kendra from the ascendant.

When cancellation applies strongly, the configuration is called neecha bhanga raj yoga, and it is read not as a return to neutral but as a source of unusual strength — the classical description is of someone who rises specifically because of an early disadvantage. Whether that reading is doing analysis or telling a comforting story is a fair question, but it is what the tradition says.

Debilitation is not a defect

Worth stating directly, because "you have a debilitated Moon" is delivered as bad news far more often than the texts warrant.

A debilitated graha still functions. It signifies the same things and rules the same houses; it simply operates without the natural support of its sign. In practice this often reads as an area where someone has had to build competence deliberately rather than inheriting it — and deliberate competence is frequently more durable.

Three things routinely outweigh debilitation: cancellation, as above; house rulership, since a debilitated graha ruling favourable houses for your ascendant is still your ally; and timing, since a graha's dignity only becomes salient during its dasha.

Honest limits

Dignity depends on the sign, which depends on the ayanamsa. Near a sign boundary, different ayanamsa values can move a graha across it — and a graha at 29°50' of one sign versus 0°10' of the next is a completely different dignity reading. We use Lahiri, the Indian government standard.

Also worth resisting: the temptation to total up dignities into a score. Classical practice has a formal method for that (shadbala) which weighs six distinct factors, and it does not reduce to counting exaltations.

And the standing caveat: this is a traditional interpretive framework with no controlled evidence behind it.
