What people traditionally observe
Where a grahan is visible, the customary practices are to keep the sutak period free of cooking and of beginning new work, to bathe after the eclipse ends, and to spend the window in japa or quiet reading. Temples are usually closed for the duration and reopen after a cleaning.
Traditional observance also asks pregnant women to remain indoors during an eclipse. This is a religious custom. There is no medical basis for it, and nothing on this page is health advice — if you have a medical question about an eclipse, or about fasting during one, ask a doctor.
