The short answer
A kundli does not label a marriage "love" or "arranged". Astrologers read a set of indications, and several of them together lean one way. The main ones are a link between the 5th house (romance) and the 7th house (marriage), Venus and Mars in contact, Rahu or Venus in the 7th house, and the same links repeated in the Navamsa (D9).
It helps to be honest about where these rules come from. The classical texts, such as BPHS and Phaladeepika, describe the spouse, the timing and the quality of a marriage. They do not sort marriages into "love" and "arranged", a distinction that matters far more to modern families than it did to the authors. The combinations below are modern applications of classical house logic. They are widely used, and they are tendencies, not tests.

The 5th–7th house connection
The 5th house signifies romance, affection, courtship and the heart's own choices, along with children and learning. The 7th house signifies marriage and the spouse. When the two houses are linked, the reading is that romance and marriage are joined in the life: the person is more likely to marry someone they first chose for themselves.
The links astrologers look for are:
- the 5th lord placed in the 7th house, or the 7th lord in the 5th;
- an exchange of signs between the 5th and 7th lords (parivartana);
- the 5th and 7th lords conjoined, or aspecting each other, in any house;
- the 5th lord linked with Venus, or the 7th lord linked with the 5th house.
A strong, clear link is the indication given most weight. A weak or afflicted one may describe a romance that does not end in marriage.
Venus and Mars
Venus signifies love, attraction and pleasure; Mars signifies desire, initiative and the courage to act. When the two are conjoined, aspect each other or exchange signs, the reading is strong attraction and a readiness to pursue it. That supports a self-chosen relationship, though on its own it says more about passion than about marriage.
Venus's own condition matters too. A strong Venus, especially linked to the 5th or 7th house, makes love a large theme in the life; an afflicted Venus suggests the theme comes with difficulty.
Rahu, Venus or the Moon in the 7th house
- Rahu in the 7th house is read as an unconventional partnership: someone from outside the expected community, culture or country, or a match made against family expectation. Traditional readers often linked it with inter-caste or inter-faith marriage. It describes unfamiliarity, not whether the marriage was arranged.
- Venus in the 7th house puts romance at the centre of marriage. Some classical rules caution that a significator in its own house can overload that house, so astrologers read it with the rest of the chart rather than as a simple plus.
- The Moon in the 5th or 7th house, or the Moon linked with Venus, is read as choosing by feeling. It supports an emotional bond as the basis for marriage.
The pages on Rahu in the 7th house and Venus in the 7th house go further into each placement.
The 9th, 2nd and 11th houses: family and friends
Arranged marriage, in the traditional reading, is the family's choice and blessing. Astrologers therefore look at the houses of family and tradition:
- the 9th house (father, elders, dharma and tradition) and the 2nd house (the family one is born into) strongly linked to the 7th;
- Jupiter aspecting the 7th house or its lord, read as a marriage with blessings and conventional support.
The 11th house covers friends, social circles and the fulfilment of wishes. A strong 11th–7th link is often read as meeting a partner through friends or a social network, which today can lead to either kind of marriage.
Check the Navamsa (D9)
The Navamsa is the divisional chart most closely tied to marriage. Astrologers repeat the same checks there: the 5th and 7th lords of the D9, Venus's sign and house in the D9, and any Venus–Mars or Rahu–7th contact. An indication that appears in both the birth chart and the D9 is given far more weight than one that appears in a single chart. The free Navamsa calculator draws your D9.
Love-cum-arranged: the most common answer today
Many charts carry both kinds of indication: a 5th–7th link alongside Jupiter's aspect on the 7th, or Rahu in the 7th alongside a strong 9th house. That matches how many people marry now: they choose each other, and their families bless and organise the wedding, or the families introduce them and they choose. A good reading says so plainly rather than forcing one label onto the chart.
Common myths about love marriage in the kundli
- "Venus with Mars guarantees a love marriage." It describes attraction and initiative. Without a 5th–7th link, it says more about romance than about marriage.
- "Rahu in the 7th house means the marriage will fail." Rahu in the 7th describes an unusual or cross-community partner. Many such marriages are long and happy; the rest of the chart and the two people decide that.
- "A love marriage yoga means the family will oppose it." The chart can show a self-chosen match. Whether a family welcomes it depends on the family, not on the planets.
- "Couples who chose each other do not need to compare charts." Matching is optional either way. If you want to compare, Kundli matching works the same for every couple.
Why a calculator cannot decide this from a date of birth
Every indication above depends on houses, and houses are counted from the lagna, which changes about every two hours. A "love or arranged marriage calculator by date of birth" that does not ask for the time and place of birth cannot know your 5th or 7th house, so it is guessing.
A date is enough for something else: comparing two people. The love compatibility calculator scores two dates of birth on the Guna Milan system and shows which parts the birth times would change. That tells you about a pair, not about how a marriage comes about.
Read your own chart in five steps
- Make your free Kundli with your birth time and place, and note your lagna.
- Find your 5th and 7th lords, and check whether they are linked by placement, exchange, conjunction or aspect.
- Check whether Venus and Mars are in contact, and what sits in your 7th house.
- Look at Jupiter's aspect on the 7th house and the strength of your 9th and 2nd houses.
- Repeat the checks in the Navamsa, and count how many indications point each way.
If you would rather not count by hand, ask the free astrology chat "will I have a love or arranged marriage?" and it answers from the houses and planets of your own chart.
Whatever the chart leans towards, the decision belongs to the two people. Astrology can describe tendencies in a life; it cannot tell you whom to love or whether to accept a proposal. Consent, respect and safety matter more than any placement.
Frequently asked questions about love or arranged marriage in the kundli
Which planet is responsible for love marriage?
No single planet. Venus, the significator of love, is read with the 5th and 7th house lords, Mars and Rahu. Several indications together lean towards a self-chosen match; one alone does not decide it.
Does Rahu in the 7th house mean love marriage?
Not necessarily. Rahu in the 7th is read as an unconventional or cross-community partnership, which may come about through either love or an introduction.
Can kundli matching be done for a love marriage?
Yes. Guna Milan and the Manglik check work the same way whether the couple met on their own or were introduced, and many couples who chose each other still compare their charts.
Is a love marriage successful according to astrology?
Astrology does not rank love marriages above or below arranged ones. Readers judge the strength of the 7th house, Venus and the Navamsa, and none of that measures respect, consent or communication.
Can a date of birth alone show love or arranged marriage?
No. Every indication depends on houses counted from the lagna, which needs the birth time and place. A tool that answers from the date alone is guessing.
