TimingNew DelhiWhat it is
Parana (breaking the fast), 21 Nov 20261:10 PM to 3:18 PMHari Vasara runs past the morning, so parana is kept after madhyahna (midday), in the afternoon window.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi is not a Gregorian date. It is Shukla paksha tithi 11 of Kartika in the amanta reckoning, and the Gregorian day it lands on moves by up to a month between years because twelve lunations fall about eleven days short of a solar year.

Sunrise in New Delhi

Sunrise in New Delhi falls at 6:47 AM on that day, and that is the instant the tithi has to be running at for the day to carry the observance. It is computed for this city rather than assumed, because it is what decides the date.

This year the tithi is skipped (kshaya). Ekadashi begins after one sunrise and ends before the next, so it touches neither and the usual rule cannot pick a day. The observance is not cancelled: it is kept on the day the tithi runs through, which is the date above. Saying so matters — a page that printed the date alone would be implying a rule that did not actually apply this year.

The two instants above are the astronomy and are not in dispute. The day is an interpretation of them: this observance is decided at sunrise, so it belongs to the day whose sunrise the tithi carries — not simply to the day the tithi begins.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2026: Smarta and Vaishnava dates

Listed here (Smarta, the sunrise rule)
Friday, 20 November 2026 — The fast belongs to the day whose sunrise carries Ekadashi — the day AstroSage lists and the one this page leads with.
Vaishnava (ISKCON), the arunodaya rule
Saturday, 21 November 2026 — Ekadashi (20 Nov, 7:16 AM to 21 Nov, 6:32 AM) still holds the arunodaya of Saturday, 21 November 2026, the 96 minutes before sunrise, so the Vaishnava fast is kept on that later morning.

Every day above is computed for New Delhi from the same tithi instants. ISKCON temples publish their own calendar for each city and also apply the Mahadvadashi rules, which can move a fast to Dwadashi in some years — where your temple's calendar differs, follow it.

Meaning and vrat katha

Dev Uthani Ekadashi vrat katha and significance

Also known as Devutthana, Prabodhini, Devotthan Ekadashi.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi, the bright-half Ekadashi of Kartika, is the day Vishnu is woken from the four-month sleep that began on Devshayani. Chaturmas ends with it, and weddings and other new beginnings resume. Households draw Vishnu's feet in rice paste, set out sugarcane, water chestnuts and seasonal fruit, and wake the Lord with bells, conch and song; Tulsi Vivah, the marriage of tulsi to Vishnu as Shaligram, follows on Dwadashi or the same evening. It is also called Prabodhini, Devutthana and Haribodhini Ekadashi.

The katha

Retold in brief from the Kartika-mahatmya of the Skanda Purana, where Brahma tells Narada of Prabodhini; the reason for Vishnu's sleep is the Vamana story of the Bhagavata and Vamana Puranas.

When Vishnu, as Vamana, took the three worlds from King Bali in three steps and sent him to rule the netherworld, Bali asked one thing in return: that the Lord stay with him. Vishnu agreed, and so, the tradition says, for four months of every year — from Devshayani in Ashadha to this Ekadashi in Kartika — he rests in yoga-nidra on Shesha in the ocean of milk while his presence remains with Bali.

Those four months are Chaturmas. Lakshmi keeps watch, the gods themselves are said to rest, and households set aside weddings, housewarmings and other beginnings until the Lord is awake again.

On the Ekadashi of the bright half of Kartika the gods gather and wake him with conches, bells and hymns — "Uttishtha Govinda", rise, Govinda — and the world resumes its work. Brahma tells Narada in the Kartika-mahatmya that a fast kept on this day, with the night spent awake in kirtan and lamps lit before Vishnu, outweighs a great many sacrifices, and that its merit reaches back over a person's whole life.

The next day, on Dwadashi, the newly woken Vishnu is married to Tulsi in his Shaligram form, and with that marriage the season of weddings opens.

How the fast is kept

  • The fast runs from sunrise on the Ekadashi day to parana on Dwadashi. Many families eat a single plain meal on Dashami, the evening before.
  • Grains and rice are left out on Ekadashi. Those who cannot keep a complete fast take fruit, milk or a phalahar meal; a waterless fast is kept only by those whose tradition and health allow it.
  • Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi leaves, a lamp and his names; reading or hearing the day's katha is part of the observance, and many stay awake for a part of the night in kirtan or japa.
  • Parana is on Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara — the first quarter of Dwadashi — has passed. The window for your city is computed above.

Fasting customs are described here as tradition, not as medical advice. Consult a doctor before fasting, particularly if you are pregnant, diabetic, elderly or on medication.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi muhurat

Dev Uthani Ekadashi, also called Prabodhini or Devutthana Ekadashi, is the Ekadashi of the bright half of Kartika, when Vishnu is woken from the four-month sleep of Chaturmas and weddings and other new beginnings resume. In New Delhi it falls on Friday, 20 November 2026: the fast is kept from sunrise, the Lord is woken in the evening with conch, bells and the folk song 'Utho Dev', and the fast is completed at parana on Dwadashi. Parana in New Delhi: 21 Nov, 1:10 PM to 3:18 PM.

Parana: breaking the fast21 Nov, 1:10 PM to 3:18 PMHari Vasara runs past the morning, so parana waits until midday has passed: the aparahna.

The window on Dwadashi, the day after the fast, in which the vrat is completed. It opens once Hari Vasara is over and is preferred in the morning; in a year when Hari Vasara runs past the morning, parana moves to the afternoon, and the window shown already follows that rule. Break the fast with a tulsi leaf and a sip of water, then a simple meal, and do it before Dwadashi ends.

Hari Vasara ends21 Nov, 12:08 PMThe end of the first quarter of Dwadashi; the fast is never broken inside it.

Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi, still belongs to Vishnu, and the fast is never broken inside it. Parana can begin only after this moment, which is why the parana window does not open at sunrise in every year.

Brahma Muhurta5:00 AM to 5:53 AMThe 14th of the night's fifteen muhurtas, ending one muhurta before sunrise.

The hour before dawn on the Ekadashi. Wake, bathe and take the sankalp of the fast in it; many temples begin the Lord's morning worship in this window.

The fast begins at sunrise on Ekadashi in New Delhi and runs until parana on Dwadashi.

Pradosh Kaal5:25 PM to 8:06 PMFrom sunset for three night muhurtas (a fifth of the night).

The first part of the night after sunset, when most North Indian homes wake the Lord: lamps are lit at the drawn Dev, the basket over the offerings is lifted while the family sings and beats a thali, and the aarti follows. Families who hold Tulsi Vivah on the Ekadashi evening itself use this window too.

Sunset5:25 PMThe upper edge of the Sun leaving the horizon.

Lamps at the tulsi, the main door and the drawn Dev are lit at dusk in New Delhi; the evening worship follows.

Nishita Kaal11:40 PM to 12:33 AM (21 Nov)The 8th of the night's fifteen muhurtas, around the middle of the night.

The middle of the night. Families who keep a jagran, a night of kirtan, offer an aarti at this time; the Kartika-mahatmya praises staying awake through this night.

Puja vidhi · step by step at home

Dev Uthani Ekadashi puja vidhi

  1. The evening before (Dashami)

Eat one simple sattvik meal on Dashami, before sunset if you can, without onion and garlic. Pluck the tulsi leaves you will need tomorrow now, because tulsi is not plucked on Ekadashi.

  2. Bathe and take the sankalp

Wake in Brahma muhurta, bathe and wear clean clothes, yellow if you have them. Before the Lord, hold water and a flower in your right hand, say your name and that you will keep the Prabodhini Ekadashi fast for Vishnu, and let the water fall.

  3. Morning worship

Clean the shrine and seat Vishnu, a Shaligram or Krishna on a chowki covered with a yellow cloth. Offer water, panchamrit to a metal idol, sandalwood, yellow flowers, tulsi leaves, a ghee lamp, incense and fruit, and chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.

  4. The day of the fast

Keep the fast your health allows: fruit and milk (phalahar), or a stricter fast if it is your family's custom. Spend the day in japa, the Vishnu Sahasranama or the Gita, and read or listen to the vrat katha.

  5. Draw the Dev

In the afternoon, clean a spot in the courtyard, the puja room or beside the tulsi. With geru (red ochre) and a paste of rice flour, draw a square chowk and inside it the Dev: the Lord's feet, or simple figures of the gods, with the sun, moon and lotus motifs your family draws.

  6. Set out the season's produce

Place sugarcane, water chestnuts (singhara), sweet potato, ber, seasonal fruit, sweets and a lamp on the drawing. In many homes they are covered with a large basket, a sieve or a parat until the waking, and some families tie sugarcane stalks into a small canopy over the Dev.

  7. Lamps at dusk

At sunset light ghee lamps at the Dev, at the tulsi, at the main door and in the shrine.

  8. Wake the Lord

In the evening, the women of the house beat a thali or a winnowing fan (soop), ring bells and blow the conch, lift the basket and sing the folk song that begins Utho Dev, baitho Dev: rise, Lord; sit up, Lord. Then recite Uttishthottishtha Govinda, offering flowers and tulsi.

  9. Offerings and aarti

Offer the sugarcane, singhara, fruit and sweets made without grain, with water. Sing Om Jai Jagdish Hare, go round the Dev or the tulsi, and ask pardon for any mistake made in the worship.

  10. Tulsi in the evening

Light a lamp at the tulsi and offer it water and a red chunari. Families who hold Tulsi Vivah on the Ekadashi evening begin it now; many others hold it the next evening, on Dwadashi.

  11. Jagran

Spend part of the night, or the whole night, in kirtan and bhajans before the Lord, with a lamp burning safely.

  12. Parana on Dwadashi

On Dwadashi, bathe, worship Vishnu, give food, fruit or warm clothes to someone in need, and break the fast inside the parana window: a tulsi leaf with water first, then a sattvik meal.

Significance

Why Dev Uthani Ekadashi is kept

Prabodhini means the awakening, and Devutthana the rising of the god. The day closes Chaturmas, the four months that began on Devshayani Ekadashi, so weddings, housewarmings, the mundan and other samskaras that waited through the monsoon resume after it. It also opens Bhishma Panchaka, the five days of fasting and lamps that end on Kartik Purnima, kept above all by Vaishnavas and, in Odisha, as Panchuka.

It falls in Kartika, the month tradition holds dearest to Vishnu, and it is a harvest moment as well: in many North Indian homes the first sugarcane, water chestnuts and sweet potatoes of the season are offered to the Lord before the household eats them. In Maharashtra it is Kartiki Ekadashi, when pilgrims walk to Vitthal at Pandharpur for the second great yatra of the year, after Ashadhi Ekadashi.

Upay · traditional practice

Dev Uthani Ekadashi upay: traditional remedies

A lamp at the tulsi

Light a ghee lamp at the tulsi at dusk and offer it water; tulsi is Vishnu's beloved, and many families keep this lamp every evening of Kartika.

Japa of the twelve syllables

Chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya 108 times on a tulsi mala on the day of the fast. It is kept as a prayer for a steady and peaceful mind.

The Vishnu Sahasranama

Recite or listen to the thousand names of Vishnu once on the Ekadashi; families keep it as the day's main recitation.

Offer the first produce first

Offer the season's sugarcane, singhara and fruit to the Lord before anyone eats them, a custom of gratitude for the harvest.

Give on Dwadashi

Before parana, give food, fruit or a warm blanket to someone in need, or feed a cow. Tradition holds that the fast is completed by giving.

Keep a jagran

Stay awake for a part of the night in kirtan; the Kartika-mahatmya praises this night above most, and families keep it for the joy of the Lord's waking.

Begin what waited

Families often take up the auspicious work they postponed through Chaturmas after this day, a wedding, a griha pravesh or a new venture, choosing its own muhurat for it.

The custom, in short

Dev Uthani Ekadashi do's and don'ts

Do

  • Eat a light sattvik meal on Dashami and pluck the tulsi leaves for the puja the day before.
  • Keep the fast your health allows, from sunrise on Ekadashi to parana on Dwadashi.
  • Wake the Lord in the evening with bells, conch, lamps and the song, and offer sugarcane and seasonal produce.
  • Light lamps at the tulsi, the main door and the drawn Dev.
  • Spend the day in japa, the Vishnu Sahasranama or the Gita, and read the katha.
  • Break the fast inside the parana window, after Hari Vasara and before Dwadashi ends.
  • Give food or warm clothes on Dwadashi before you eat.

Don't

  • Do not eat rice or other grains on Ekadashi.
  • Do not pluck tulsi leaves on Ekadashi; use the ones picked the day before.
  • Do not break the fast during Hari Vasara or after Dwadashi has ended.
  • Do not use onion, garlic or non-vegetarian food in the fasting meals or the parana meal.
  • Do not quarrel, speak harshly or sleep through the day of the fast.
  • Do not fast without water if you are unwell, pregnant, elderly or on medication; phalahar keeps the vrat too.
  • Do not leave lamps unattended near cloth, the sugarcane canopy or curtains.

Across India

Dev Uthani Ekadashi customs and food

By region

Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Uttarakhand
Women draw the Dev in geru and rice paste, cover the season's produce with a basket and wake the Lord at dusk by beating a thali or soop and singing Utho Dev.
Rajasthan and parts of Madhya Pradesh
Devuthni Gyaras opens the wedding season, and the day itself is widely treated as an abujh saava, auspicious without consulting the panchang, so many weddings are held on it.
Maharashtra
Kartiki Ekadashi brings lakhs of warkaris to Vitthal and Rukmini at Pandharpur, and the state's official mahapuja is performed there in the early hours of the morning.
Gujarat
Dev Uthi Agiyaras opens the lagna season; Tulsi Vivah is celebrated with music and a full wedding procession for the Lord.
Odisha
The day begins Panchuka, the last five days of Kartika, kept with fasting and a vegetarian diet until Kartik Purnima.
ISKCON and Vaishnava temples
Kept as Utthana Ekadashi, when Bhishma Panchaka begins. The Vaishnava calendar reads Ekadashi at arunodaya, before sunrise, so its date can differ by a day from the Smarta one.

Bhog, prasad and fasting food

  • Sugarcane Offered first to the Lord and then eaten; in parts of North India the sugarcane harvest traditionally begins after this day.
  • Singhara and shakarkandi Water chestnuts and sweet potato, boiled, roasted or made into a halwa, all fasting foods.
  • Sabudana khichdi or kheer With rock salt (sendha namak), for a phalahar meal.
  • Kuttu or singhara flour puri For those whose family fast allows flours that are not grains.
  • Makhana kheer Fox nuts cooked in milk, a common offering and fasting sweet.
  • Fruit and milk The simplest phalahar: seasonal fruit, milk, curd and dry fruit.
  • The parana meal Simple sattvik food on Dwadashi after the tulsi leaf and water, often dal, rice, a vegetable and kheer, without onion and garlic.

Every row is computed for New Delhi from the same ephemeris, not looked up. Sunrise decides which day a tithi names, and sunrise differs across India by more than an hour, so a date computed for Delhi can be a day out elsewhere.

Why calendars disagree about this date

There is no single authority that settles a Hindu festival date, and the divergence is genuine rather than sloppy. Three causes account for almost all of it.

  1. A tithi rarely starts at sunrise. One that is running at the deciding moment on two days — or on none — is claimed by both days under different rules.
  2. Month reckoning. North India runs purnimanta, the south and west amanta. The same dark fortnight carries different month names in the two, so an observance defined as "krishna X of month Y" can land a full lunation apart.
  3. Which moment decides. Most vratas belong to the day whose sunrise carries the tithi, but not all: this one is decided at sunrise. Almanacs that apply the sunrise rule to everything move several festivals by a day.

So this page shows its working. If your pandit or your family almanac gives a different day, the instants above will usually show you exactly why — and that is more useful than a date asserted without one.

Common questions

When is Dev Uthani Ekadashi?

In New Delhi, Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2026 is on Friday, 20 November 2026. Ekadashi runs 7:16 AM to 6:32 AM (21 Nov), and the fast is kept on the day it rules, normally the one whose sunrise it holds; parana, the breaking of the fast, follows on Dwadashi. Parana: 21 Nov, 1:10 PM to 3:18 PM. The Vaishnava (ISKCON) day can differ, as this page notes.

Why does another calendar give a different Dev Uthani Ekadashi date?

Three honest reasons. The tithi can be running at the deciding moment on two days or on none. North India reckons the month purnimanta and the south and west amanta, which names the same krishna fortnight differently. And almanacs differ on which moment of the day decides an observance. The instants above are the astronomy; the day is an interpretation of them.

Why is this marked as a skipped tithi?

Ekadashi begins after one deciding moment and ends before the next this year, so it touches none — a kshaya tithi. The observance is not cancelled: it is kept on the day the tithi runs through, which is the day given above.

Why is Dev Uthani Ekadashi observed?

It marks the waking of Vishnu after the four months of Chaturmas, the end of a season of restraint and the return of weddings and new beginnings. It also honours the harvest, whose first sugarcane and singhara are offered to the Lord, and in the Kartika-mahatmya its fast and night of kirtan are praised above many sacrifices.

Where does the Dev Uthani Ekadashi vrat katha come from?

It is told in the Kartika-mahatmya of the Skanda Purana, where Brahma tells Narada of Prabodhini; the reason for Vishnu's sleep is the Vamana story of the Bhagavata and Vamana Puranas. The katha is retold in full above.

Is Dev Uthani Ekadashi on a different day for Smarta and Vaishnava (ISKCON)?

Yes, this year they differ: the Smarta date is Friday, 20 November 2026 and the Vaishnava (ISKCON) date is Saturday, 21 November 2026. The Vaishnava rule reads Ekadashi at arunodaya, 96 minutes before sunrise, instead of at sunrise.

What is the parana time for Dev Uthani Ekadashi?

Parana in New Delhi, on Dwadashi: 21 Nov, 1:10 PM to 3:18 PM. The window opens only after Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi, ends (21 Nov, 12:08 PM), and it must close before Dwadashi does. Begin with a tulsi leaf and a sip of water, then eat a simple sattvik meal.

What is the Dev Uthani Ekadashi vrat katha?

The traditional background is the Vamana story: Vishnu promised King Bali to stay with him, and tradition links this to his four months of yoga-nidra from Devshayani Ekadashi, from which he is woken on this day. The vrat katha most families read is a folk story of a servant who could not fast, cooked by the river and called the Lord, who came and ate with him, teaching the king that a fast bears fruit only with a pure heart. Both are told in the katha section above.

How do I do the Dev Uthani puja at home?

Keep the fast from sunrise and worship Vishnu in the morning with tulsi, yellow flowers and a lamp. In the afternoon draw the Dev in geru and rice paste, set sugarcane, singhara and seasonal fruit on it and cover them. At dusk light lamps, wake the Lord with bells, conch, a beaten thali and the song Utho Dev, recite Uttishthottishtha Govinda, offer the produce and sing Om Jai Jagdish Hare. Parana follows on Dwadashi.

How is the Dev drawn for Dev Uthani Ekadashi?

Clean a spot in the courtyard, the puja room or beside the tulsi. With geru (red ochre) and rice-flour paste draw a square chowk, and inside it the Lord's feet or simple figures of the gods, with a sun, a moon and lotuses as your family draws them. Set the produce and a lamp on it and cover them with a basket until the waking. There is no single correct design: every family keeps its own.

Which mantra is said to wake the Lord?

The waking verse is Uttishthottishtha Govinda tyaja nidram Jagatpate: rise, rise, Govinda, leave your sleep, lord of the world. It is recited while the conch and bells sound, with flowers and tulsi. Through the day, chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, and at parana say the prayer Ajnana-timirandhasya. All are in the mantra section with their meaning.

What is the folk song Utho Dev, baitho Dev?

It is the women's song of North India for waking the Lord: while a thali or a winnowing fan is beaten and the basket over the offerings is lifted, they sing Utho Dev, baitho Dev, rise, Lord, sit up, Lord, and go on to ask for the household's well-being, good harvests and weddings in the family. The verses differ from village to village and are passed down orally.

Can weddings be held on Dev Uthani Ekadashi, and when do wedding muhurats begin?

Chaturmas ends with this day, so weddings resume after it. In Rajasthan and parts of Madhya Pradesh the day itself is treated as an abujh saava, auspicious without consulting the panchang, and many weddings take place on it. A formal vivah muhurat is still chosen from the couple's charts, with Jupiter and Venus not combust, so in some years the first panchang dates come a little later; the site's Vivah Muhurat page lists them for your city.

Are Dev Uthani Ekadashi and Tulsi Vivah on the same day?

Often not, but customs differ. Many panchangs list Tulsi Vivah on Dwadashi, the day after Dev Uthani Ekadashi, in the evening. Many families hold it on the Ekadashi evening itself, as in Saurashtra in Gujarat and in many North Indian homes; in Maharashtra it is mostly held on Dwadashi; and the season of Tulsi Vivah runs on to Kartik Purnima, so any evening in between is kept by some.

What can be eaten in the Dev Uthani Ekadashi fast?

Grains, rice and pulses are left out. A phalahar fast allows fruit, milk, curd, dry fruit, makhana, sabudana, sweet potato, singhara and, in many families, kuttu or singhara flour, cooked with rock salt. Onion and garlic are avoided. The strict waterless fast is kept only by those whose tradition and health allow it.

Which aarti is sung on Dev Uthani Ekadashi?

Om Jai Jagdish Hare, the best-known Vishnu aarti, is sung after the waking and at the morning puja, with camphor or a ghee lamp. The full text, in Devanagari and in roman letters, is given in the aarti section above.

What is needed for the Dev Uthani puja?

A Vishnu or Shaligram idol, a chowki with a yellow cloth, geru and rice paste for the drawing, a basket to cover the offerings, sugarcane, singhara, sweet potato and seasonal fruit, tulsi leaves plucked the day before, yellow flowers, panchamrit, ghee lamps, camphor, a conch or bell and a thali to beat. The full list with substitutes is above.

Is the Dev Uthani Ekadashi fast nirjala, without water?

It does not have to be. Some devotees keep it nirjala by family custom, but most keep phalahar, and the vrat is complete either way when it is kept with devotion. Anyone who is unwell, pregnant, elderly or on medication should not go without water; consult a doctor before fasting.

What are the other names of Dev Uthani Ekadashi?

It is also called Prabodhini Ekadashi, Devutthana or Devotthan Ekadashi, Haribodhini Ekadashi, Devuthni Gyaras in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, Dev Uthi Agiyaras in Gujarat and Kartiki Ekadashi in Maharashtra. All name the same day, the Ekadashi of the bright half of Kartika.
