The date in New Delhi

Thursday, 14 October 2027

Sharad Purnima is not a Gregorian date. It is Shukla paksha tithi 15 of Ashwin in the amanta reckoning, and the Gregorian day it lands on moves by up to a month between years because twelve lunations fall about eleven days short of a solar year.

Nishita in New Delhi falls at 12:07 AM on that day, and that is the instant the tithi has to be running at for the day to carry the observance. It is computed for this city rather than assumed, because it is what decides the date.

The two instants above are the astronomy and are not in dispute. The day is an interpretation of them: this observance is decided at nishita, so it belongs to the day whose nishita the tithi carries — not simply to the day the tithi begins.

Sharad Purnima muhurat

Sharad Purnima, the full moon of Ashwin, is the night the moon is said to shine with all sixteen of its kalas: Lakshmi is worshipped with a night vigil (Kojagari), kheer is set out in the moonlight, and in Braj the night is Krishna's Maharaas. Sharad Purnima 2027 is on Thursday, 14 October 2027 in New Delhi, and the moon rises at 4:57 PM. Set the kheer out in the moonlight (4:57 PM to 12:32 AM (15 Oct)) and do the Kojagara Lakshmi puja in the midnight window (11:42 PM to 12:32 AM (15 Oct)).

The midnight muhurta of the Purnima night, when, an old verse says, Lakshmi goes about asking 'ko jagarti?' — 'who is awake?'. It is the window for the Kojagara Lakshmi puja and the high point of the night's vigil, and it is the window that decides which night is Sharad Purnima.

The full moon rises close to sunset. Offer arghya to the moon after it rises, and set the kheer out from this time; those who fasted break the fast after the moon puja.

Puja vidhi · step by step at home

Sharad Purnima puja vidhi

  1. Morning: bath and sankalp

Bathe early — a holy dip if you live by a river — clean the house and the puja place, and, if you are fasting, take the sankalp for the Sharad Purnima vrat with water and rice in your hand.

  2. Make the kheer

In the evening, simmer full-fat milk with a little rice until it thickens, add sugar and cardamom, and, if you like, saffron and dry fruit. Use a clean steel, glass, silver or earthen bowl you can cover with a fine cloth.

  3. Prepare the Lakshmi puja

Set up a chowki with a red or white cloth and a picture of Lakshmi (with Vishnu if you wish), a kalash with mango leaves, and a ghee lamp. In Bengali homes, draw alpana with rice paste, with Lakshmi's footprints leading into the house.

  4. Evening Lakshmi puja

In the pradosh window, offer Lakshmi kumkum, rice, lotus or white and red flowers, incense, the lamp and naivedya; chant 'Om Shrim Mahalakshmyai Namah' 108 times or recite the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam, and sing the aarti.

  5. Arghya to the moon

When the moon has risen, offer water mixed with a little raw milk, rice and white flowers from a lota, looking at the moon, with the Chandra shloka; light a lamp and pray for a calm mind and the family's well-being.

  6. Set the kheer in the moonlight

Place the kheer in open moonlight on a terrace, balcony or courtyard, raised off the ground and covered with a muslin cloth or net to keep insects and dust out, and keep it there through the kheer window.

  7. Keep the vigil (Kojagara)

Stay awake into the night with bhajans, the Lakshmi stotras, the vrat katha and family games, as the Kojagari custom asks; keep a ghee lamp burning.

  8. Midnight Lakshmi puja

In the Kojagara window, offer flowers and the lamp to Lakshmi again; Bengali families blow the conch and read the Lakshmi Panchali. Offer the kheer to Lakshmi, and in Krishna households to Radha-Krishna.

  9. Break the fast and take the prasad

Those who fasted break it after the moon puja, with fruit or the kheer prasad. Bring the kheer in after the window closes; eat it at midnight, or keep it in the refrigerator and share it as prasad in the morning.

  10. Next morning: share and give

Share the kheer with family and neighbours, and give rice, milk, sugar or white cloth to someone in need, the traditional daan of the full moon.

Katha · the story and its meaning

Sharad Purnima katha and significance

The katha

The vrat katha told on Sharad Purnima is of a moneylender's two daughters who both kept the full-moon fast — the elder completely, the younger always leaving it unfinished. After marriage, the younger sister's children did not survive. Wise men told her the reason was her incomplete Purnima fasts, so she kept the Sharad Purnima vrat with full care.

When her next child too died soon after birth, she laid him on a low stool, covered him with a cloth, and asked her elder sister to sit there. As the elder sister's garment brushed the child, he began to cry. The startled sister scolded her, but the younger explained that the child had come back to life by the merit of her sister's complete fasts — and from then on the full Purnima vrat was kept by all.

Kojagari takes its name from an old verse: on the full-moon night of Ashwin, Lakshmi wanders the earth asking 'ko jagarti?' — 'who is awake?' — and blesses the home where the lamp is lit and the family is awake in devotion. And in Braj the Bhagavata's autumn nights 'with the jasmine in bloom', when Krishna played his flute and the gopis came to dance the Raas, are kept on this full moon as Raas Purnima.

Why it is kept

Sharad Purnima is the full moon of the clear autumn sky after the monsoon, the night tradition says the moon is complete with all sixteen kalas. Its light is held to carry amrit, which is why kheer — milk, rice and sugar, all 'white' foods of the Moon — is set out under it and eaten as prasad.

It is a night of three devotions: Lakshmi, worshipped with a vigil (Kojagara); the Moon, worshipped with arghya; and, in Braj, Krishna, whose Maharaas with the gopis is remembered. Ashwin Purnima is also kept as the birth anniversary of the sage Valmiki, author of the Ramayana.

The date of Sharad Purnima follows the midnight, not the sunrise: it is the night the full moon is up, which can be a day earlier than the Purnima fast some calendars list.

Upay · traditional practice

Sharad Purnima upay: traditional remedies

Eat the moonlit kheer as prasad

Kheer kept in the moonlight and offered to Lakshmi is traditionally believed to bring health and contentment to those who eat it. Eat it with gratitude as prasad; it is a devotional custom, not a medicine.

Stay awake for Lakshmi

Keeping the Kojagari vigil with a lamp lit and Lakshmi's name on the lips is the night's central custom; it is believed that Lakshmi blesses the homes she finds awake and bright.

Offer arghya to the moon

In jyotish the Moon stands for the mind, and offering it water with milk and white flowers on the full moon is a traditional practice for calm and emotional balance.

Give white things

Giving rice, milk, sugar, curd or white cloth to someone in need on Purnima is the traditional daan of the Moon's day.

Light a lamp at the tulsi and the door

A ghee lamp at the tulsi plant and at the entrance on Sharad Purnima night is an old way of welcoming Lakshmi into a clean, lit home.

Read the Kanakadhara Stotram

Many families read Adi Shankaracharya's Kanakadhara Stotram or the Shri Sukta during the vigil, traditional hymns to Lakshmi for the home's prosperity.

The custom, in short

Sharad Purnima do's and don'ts

Do

  • Cover the kheer with a fine cloth and keep it raised off the ground.
  • Keep pets and birds away from the kheer.
  • Refrigerate the kheer if you will eat it the next morning.
  • Offer arghya to the moon after it rises.
  • Keep a ghee lamp burning and the house clean and lit for Lakshmi.
  • Share the kheer prasad with family and neighbours.

Don't

  • Don't leave the kheer uncovered, or eat it if it smells sour.
  • Don't stop any prescribed medicine for a kheer-based remedy; the tradition is devotional.
  • Don't offer arghya from a plastic vessel; use copper, brass or silver.
  • Don't leave lamps burning unattended on terraces or near curtains.
  • Don't spend the vigil in quarrels or gambling; keep it to devotion and family time.
  • Don't use the first full moon of winter as a reason to skip the fast if your health asks for food; fast only as you are able.

Every row is computed for New Delhi from the same ephemeris, not looked up. Sunrise decides which day a tithi names, and sunrise differs across India by more than an hour, so a date computed for Delhi can be a day out elsewhere.

Why calendars disagree about this date

In 2027, for New Delhi: Some calendars print moonrise about 4 minutes later, at 5:01 PM: the moment the centre of the Moon reaches the horizon, with no allowance for refraction. The time here is when its upper edge first shows, which is when it can be seen.

There is no single authority that settles a Hindu festival date, and the divergence is genuine rather than sloppy. Three causes account for almost all of it.

  1. A tithi rarely starts at sunrise. One that is running at the deciding moment on two days — or on none — is claimed by both days under different rules.
  2. Month reckoning. North India runs purnimanta, the south and west amanta. The same dark fortnight carries different month names in the two, so an observance defined as "krishna X of month Y" can land a full lunation apart.
  3. Which moment decides. Most vratas belong to the day whose sunrise carries the tithi, but not all: this one is decided at nishita. Almanacs that apply the sunrise rule to everything move several festivals by a day.

So this page shows its working. If your pandit or your family almanac gives a different day, the instants above will usually show you exactly why — and that is more useful than a date asserted without one.

Common questions

When is Sharad Purnima?

Sharad Purnima 2027 is on Thursday, 14 October 2027 in New Delhi. Purnima tithi runs 6:49 PM to 7:17 PM (15 Oct); the moon rises at 4:57 PM, and the Kojagara midnight window is 11:42 PM to 12:32 AM (15 Oct).

Why does another calendar give a different Sharad Purnima date?

Because Purnima can span two days. Sharad Purnima is the night whose midnight Purnima holds — that is when the moon is watched and the kheer set out — while some calendars list the Purnima fast on the next day, whose sunrise Purnima holds. In New Delhi Purnima runs 6:49 PM to 7:17 PM (15 Oct).

What is the Sharad Purnima muhurat in New Delhi?

Kheer under moonlight: 4:57 PM to 12:32 AM (15 Oct) on Thursday, 14 October 2027, in New Delhi. From moonrise to the end of the midnight (nishita) window. Set the covered kheer out in open moonlight once the moon is up, and bring it in after this window closes to offer it and eat it as prasad — at midnight, or the next morning after keeping it cool.

When should the kheer be kept in the moonlight?

Set it out after the moon has risen and keep it there through the window 4:57 PM to 12:32 AM (15 Oct) in New Delhi — moonrise to the end of the midnight muhurta. Cover it with a fine cloth, then bring it in to offer and eat at midnight, or refrigerate it and eat it in the morning.

What time does the moon rise on Sharad Purnima?

In New Delhi the moon rises at 4:57 PM on Thursday, 14 October 2027, close to sunset as a full moon does. Moonrise moves by well over an hour across India, so check your own city; offer the arghya once the moon is clear of the horizon.

What is the Sharad Purnima vrat katha?

It is the story of a moneylender's two daughters: the elder kept the full-moon fast completely, the younger left it unfinished and lost her children. When she finally kept the Sharad Purnima fast fully, her dead child came back to life at the touch of her sister's garment, by the merit of complete fasts. The katha is told in full above.

What is Kojagari Lakshmi Puja, and when is it done?

It is the night worship of Lakshmi on Sharad Purnima, kept with a vigil, because an old verse says she wanders asking 'who is awake?'. Bengali homes begin it at dusk with alpana and the Lakshmi Panchali; the central puja is in the midnight window, 11:42 PM to 12:32 AM (15 Oct) in New Delhi.

Why is kheer kept in moonlight on Sharad Purnima?

Tradition holds that on this night the moon is full with all sixteen kalas and that its rays carry amrit; kheer, made of milk, rice and sugar, the Moon's own white foods, is set under it to receive that blessing and then eaten as prasad.

Is there a scientific reason for the Sharad Purnima kheer?

No scientific study shows that moonlight changes kheer or makes it medicinal; the custom is devotional and seasonal — a light milk dish shared in the cool autumn night. Enjoy it as prasad, keep it covered and clean, and don't use it in place of any medicine.

What should be done on Sharad Purnima?

Bathe and take a sankalp in the morning, worship Lakshmi at dusk, offer arghya to the rising moon, set kheer out in the moonlight, keep the night's vigil with a lamp and Lakshmi's name, do the midnight puja, and share the kheer prasad and give to the needy the next morning.

Which mantra is chanted on Sharad Purnima?

For Lakshmi, 'Om Shrim Mahalakshmyai Namah' 108 times, or the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam; for the Moon, the Chandra shloka 'Dadhi shankha tusharabham' at the arghya, or 'Om Som Somaya Namah'. All are given above with their meaning.

Why is Sharad Purnima celebrated?

It is the full moon tradition holds to be complete with sixteen kalas, the night Lakshmi blesses those who keep awake, and in Braj the night of Krishna's Maharaas; it is also Valmiki's birth anniversary. Families keep it with Lakshmi puja, the moon's arghya, the kheer and a vigil.

How is the Sharad Purnima fast kept?

Take a sankalp in the morning and stay on fruit, milk and water, or one meal, through the day. Worship Lakshmi in the evening, offer arghya to the moon after it rises, and break the fast after the moon puja with fruit or the kheer prasad. Fast only as your health allows.

What is Kojagiri Purnima?

Kojagiri, from 'ko jagarti' (who is awake?), is the Marathi name for Sharad Purnima, after the night vigil for Lakshmi; Bengal calls the night Kojagori and Mithila Kojagara. In Maharashtra it is kept with masala milk under the moon, and many families also perform an aukshan for the eldest child.

Is Sharad Purnima the same as Guru Purnima?

No. Guru Purnima is the full moon of Ashadha, in June or July, dedicated to Vyasa and to one's teachers; Sharad Purnima is the full moon of Ashwin, in September or October, dedicated to Lakshmi, the Moon and, in Braj, Krishna's Raas.
