Your date, laid out on the square
This is worth saying plainly, because the presentation invites the opposite conclusion. A 3×3 square of planets looks like a reading of you. It is a tally of digits — and once you have seen the five steps, you can produce your own grid on paper in under a minute and check anything a practitioner tells you about it.

So this grid has two repeated numbers, 7 and 8, and two missing ones, 4 and 6. Read across the fixed square, the top row holds no 4, one 9 and one 2; the middle row holds one 3, one 5 and two 7s; the bottom row holds two 8s, one 1 and no 6. Every one of those statements is a fact about the date 25/03/1987, and about nothing else.
Steps 3 and 4 are the part that differs between books. Adding the Mulank and Bhagyank to the grid is the common Indian method and the one used here; several Western treatments plot only the digits of the date. That single choice changes which numbers count as missing for a great many people, and no source resolves it — so if another calculator gives you a different grid, this is almost always why.
The positions are fixed for everyone. They come from the classical magic square in which every row, column and diagonal totals fifteen — the arrangement is mathematical in origin, and the planetary rulerships were mapped onto it afterwards by the Indian tradition.

Read downwards instead of across and the same nine cells give three more lines: 4–3–8 on the left, 9–5–1 through the middle, and 2–7–6 on the right. A line counts as complete only when all three of its numbers appear at least once in your date.
A plane is just a line of three cells. A complete line is treated as an area that runs without much effort; a broken one as an area that needs a deliberate substitute. In the worked example above the emotional plane 3–5–7 is complete and the middle column 9–5–1 is complete, while the mind plane is broken by the absent 4.
The top row. Read as thinking, memory and imagination: Rahu's unconventional angle, Mars's decisiveness, the Moon's sensitivity to what other people are feeling. Complete, it is read as someone who plans, decides and reads the room in one motion.
The middle row. Jupiter, Mercury and Ketu — belief, adaptability and detachment. It is the line most often read for how someone recovers from a setback rather than how they feel day to day.
The bottom row. Saturn, Sun and Venus: patience with detail, willingness to lead, and care for comfort and relationships. Broken, it is described as ideas outrunning execution — which is a description, not a diagnosis.
Mars, Mercury and Sun, read top to bottom as will: the line that carries an intention from impulse through adjustment to action. Several Indian texts single it out under a separate name and treat a complete 9–5–1 as the most useful thing on the grid.
Every date from 1900 to 1999 carries a 1 and a 9 in the year, so almost nobody born in that century has either as a missing number. Every date from 2000 onwards carries a 2 and loses the 9 entirely. A child born in 2011 will show a very different grid from a parent born in 1979 for reasons that are entirely calendrical.
The square has no cell for 0, so zeros are discarded. Someone born on 05/09/2003 therefore contributes fewer digits than someone born on 27/12/1978, and will show more missing numbers simply because their date is shorter once the zeros go.
Nothing in the grid describes an event, a date or an outcome. The tradition uses it as a prompt for reflection and, in the Indian form, for choosing a remedy. Treat any reading that turns a missing number into a warning about your health, marriage or money with suspicion.
Classical remedies for a missing number are ordinary disciplines — a weekly practice, a donation, a change in routine. They are worth what any deliberate habit is worth. Nobody should charge you a fee to remove a number from a square that your own date of birth put there.
