Sandhi Puja6:04 AM to 6:52 AMThe last 24 minutes of Ashtami and the first 24 of Navami, the junction at 6:28 AM.

Maha Navami is not a Gregorian date. It is Shukla paksha tithi 9 of Ashwin in the amanta reckoning, and the Gregorian day it lands on moves by up to a month between years because twelve lunations fall about eleven days short of a solar year.

Aparahna in New Delhi falls at 2:29 PM on that day, and that is the instant the tithi has to be running at for the day to carry the observance. It is computed for this city rather than assumed, because it is what decides the date.

The two instants above are the astronomy and are not in dispute. The day is an interpretation of them: this observance is decided at aparahna, so it belongs to the day whose aparahna the tithi carries — not simply to the day the tithi begins.

Maha Navami muhurat

Maha Navami, the ninth day of Sharad Navratri, is the day of Maa Siddhidatri, the Navratri havan and, in many homes, Kanya Pujan; in the south it is also Ayudha Puja and Saraswati Puja. Maha Navami 2027 is on Friday, 8 October 2027 in New Delhi. The morning havan window is 9 Oct, 6:17 AM to 9:02 AM, and the Sandhi Puja that opens Navami falls at 6:04 AM to 6:52 AM.

Puja vidhi · step by step at home

Maha Navami puja vidhi

  1. Bath and the daily Navratri puja

Bathe early and do the usual puja at the kalash with fresh flowers, roli, rice, a lamp and incense; top up the akhand jyoti if one is burning.

  2. Sankalp for Navami

With water, rice and a flower in the right hand, state your name, the day and your intention: to worship Maa Siddhidatri, complete the Navratri with a havan and honour the Goddess in girls. Let the water fall at the base of the kalash.

  3. Siddhidatri puja

Offer Maa Siddhidatri roli, rice, red flowers, a chunri and bhog — sesame sweets or the halwa-puri-chana prasad, as your family does. Recite her dhyana verse and chant 'Om Devi Siddhidatryai Namah' 108 times.

  4. Complete the path

If you have been reading the Durga Saptashati through Navratri, finish it today; if not, read the Siddha Kunjika Stotram or the eleventh chapter, the hymn of praise to Narayani.

  5. Set up the havan

Place the havan kund on a layer of sand or bricks in a ventilated spot, facing east. Arrange mango wood with a little camphor, and keep ghee, havan samagri, a dry coconut, mauli, cloves and a bowl of water at hand. Sprinkle water around the kund and light the fire with camphor.

  6. Offer the ahutis

Offer the first ahutis to Ganesha and to Agni, then to the Goddess: say the Navarna mantra with 'svaha' at the end and offer a pinch of samagri with a little ghee each time — 108 times, or 11, 21 or 51 if time is short. Families with a priest may offer all 700 verses of the Durga Saptashati.

  7. Purnahuti

Fill the dry coconut with ghee and samagri, wrap it in mauli with a clove or two, and offer it into the fire standing, with the 'Om Purnamadah' verse. This completes the havan; then sprinkle water around the kund and pray for forgiveness for any mistakes.

  8. Kanya Pujan, if your family keeps it on Navami

Invite girls of about two to ten years (and a boy as Langur where that is the custom), wash their feet, seat them, apply tilak, tie mauli and serve halwa, puri and chana; give gifts and dakshina, touch their feet and see them off with respect.

  9. Aarti

Sing 'Jai Ambe Gauri' with camphor and a ghee lamp; take the havan's bhasma as a tilak if that is your custom, and share the prasad.

  10. Jaware and the kalash

Offer the barley sprouts to the Goddess; the kalash itself is usually closed on Dashami morning, so leave it in place today.

  11. Breaking the fast

Many families break the Navratri fast after the havan and Kanya Pujan; by the dharma texts the parana is on Dashami, after Navami has ended. Follow your family's custom and break it with a simple sattvik meal.

Samagri · what to keep ready

Maha Navami puja samagri list

Katha · the story and its meaning

Maha Navami katha and significance

The katha

Siddhidatri is the ninth of the nine forms of Durga, 'she who grants the siddhis', the perfections spoken of in yoga. In the popular telling, at the beginning of creation Shiva worshipped the primordial Goddess and received the siddhis through her grace; half of his body became hers, and he was known as Ardhanarishvara, half man and half woman.

She is pictured seated on a lotus, sometimes riding a lion, with four arms holding a discus, a conch, a mace and a lotus, and she is worshipped by gods, sages, siddhas and even demons alike — which is what her dhyana verse says. Worshipped last, she completes the journey of the nine nights, from Shailaputri, the daughter of the mountain, to the giver of perfection.

The havan of Navami closes the Devi Mahatmya's story too: the Goddess has defeated Mahishasura, Shumbha and Nishumbha, and the gods' hymn to Narayani in its eleventh chapter, from which the 'Sarva mangala' verse comes, is a thanksgiving. The fire carries the offerings of nine days back to her.

Why it is kept

Maha Navami is the last day of Navratri worship. The havan closes the nine days, Siddhidatri is asked for the completion of what was begun, and in many homes the girls are honoured as the Goddess before the fast is broken.

In Bengal it is the last full day of Durga Puja, and 'Navami nishi', the night of Navami, is kept with the bittersweet feeling of the Goddess's coming departure. In the south the day belongs to Saraswati and to Ayudha Puja: books, instruments and tools are set before the Goddess and rested for the day. The Vijayanagara kings celebrated a grand Mahanavami festival, and the stone platform at Hampi called the Mahanavami Dibba was built for it.

Maha Navami is not Ram Navami. Ram Navami is the Navami of Chaitra, in March or April, Rama's birthday and the last day of Chaitra Navratri; Maha Navami is the Navami of Ashwin, in the autumn.

Upay · traditional practice

Maha Navami upay: traditional remedies

Offer sesame to Siddhidatri

In the popular list of daily Navratri bhog, sesame belongs to Siddhidatri. Offering til laddus or sesame and jaggery, and sharing them as prasad, is a simple offering for the day.

Read the Siddha Kunjika Stotram

Reading the Siddha Kunjika Stotram on Navami is traditionally believed to bring the fruit of the whole Durga Saptashati when there is no time to read it all.

Give the purnahuti your full attention

The purnahuti is the 'complete offering'. It is believed that whatever was missed in the nine days is made whole by it, so offer it standing, with the whole family's hands on the coconut.

Honour girls beyond your home

Many families extend Kanya Pujan by sponsoring a girl's books, uniform or fees — a lasting way of honouring the Goddess in girls.

Feed cows and birds

Offering a part of the havan prasad to a cow, and grain to birds, is a traditional act of daan that completes the Navami puja.

The custom, in short

Maha Navami do's and don'ts

Do

  • Light the havan in a ventilated space, with a bucket of water nearby.
  • Use dry mango wood, ghee and natural samagri only.
  • Offer the purnahuti with the whole family.
  • Keep the morning for the havan and Kanya Pujan where you can.
  • Finish the Durga Saptashati path if you began it.
  • Break the fast as your family does — after the havan, or on Dashami.

Don't

  • Don't put plastic, foil, synthetic cloth or kerosene into the havan fire.
  • Don't leave the fire unattended or let children sit too close to it.
  • Don't wear loose synthetic clothes near the havan kund.
  • Don't pour the havan ash into drains; put it in a plant pot, a garden or flowing water.
  • Don't hurry the girls through Kanya Pujan to fit the havan in.
  • Don't close the Navratri kalash today if your family closes it on Dashami.

Every row is computed for New Delhi from the same ephemeris, not looked up. Sunrise decides which day a tithi names, and sunrise differs across India by more than an hour, so a date computed for Delhi can be a day out elsewhere.

Why calendars disagree about this date

There is no single authority that settles a Hindu festival date, and the divergence is genuine rather than sloppy. Three causes account for almost all of it.

  1. A tithi rarely starts at sunrise. One that is running at the deciding moment on two days — or on none — is claimed by both days under different rules.
  2. Month reckoning. North India runs purnimanta, the south and west amanta. The same dark fortnight carries different month names in the two, so an observance defined as "krishna X of month Y" can land a full lunation apart.
  3. Which moment decides. Most vratas belong to the day whose sunrise carries the tithi, but not all: this one is decided at aparahna. Almanacs that apply the sunrise rule to everything move several festivals by a day.

So this page shows its working. If your pandit or your family almanac gives a different day, the instants above will usually show you exactly why — and that is more useful than a date asserted without one.

Common questions

When is Maha Navami?

Maha Navami 2027 is on Friday, 8 October 2027 in New Delhi. Navami tithi runs 6:28 AM to 9:02 AM (9 Oct); the morning havan window is 9 Oct, 6:17 AM to 9:02 AM, and the Sandhi Puja that opens Navami falls at 6:04 AM to 6:52 AM.

Why does another calendar give a different Maha Navami date?

Three honest reasons. The tithi can be running at the deciding moment on two days or on none. North India reckons the month purnimanta and the south and west amanta, which names the same krishna fortnight differently. And almanacs differ on which moment of the day decides an observance. The instants above are the astronomy; the day is an interpretation of them.

What is the Maha Navami muhurat in New Delhi?

Light the havan in the morning while Navami runs — 9 Oct, 6:17 AM to 9:02 AM in New Delhi. If the morning is lost, the Abhijit Muhurat around noon (11:45 AM to 12:32 PM) is the usual fallback.

What time is Kanya Pujan on Navami?

Kanya Pujan is a morning rite, done in the same window as the havan — 9 Oct, 6:17 AM to 9:02 AM in New Delhi. Some families feed the girls first and then light the havan, others the reverse; follow your household's order.

Who is Maa Siddhidatri?

Siddhidatri is the ninth form of Durga, worshipped on Navami. Her name means 'giver of siddhis', the perfections of yoga; she sits on a lotus with a discus, conch, mace and lotus in her four hands, and in the popular story Shiva received the siddhis through her and became Ardhanarishvara.

What is the mantra of Maa Siddhidatri?

The short mantra is 'Om Devi Siddhidatryai Namah', chanted 108 times; her meditation verse begins 'Siddhagandharvayakshadyair'. Both are given above in Devanagari with their meaning.

Which mantra is used in the Navami havan?

Most homes use the Navarna mantra 'Om Aim Hrim Klim Chamundayai Vichche' with 'svaha' at the end, offering samagri and ghee each time, 108 times or fewer. The Argala verse 'Jayanti mangala kali' is recited before it, and the 'Om Purnamadah' verse with the final coconut.

How do I do the Navami havan at home?

Set the kund on sand in a ventilated spot, light mango wood with camphor, offer the first ahutis to Ganesha and Agni, then offer samagri with ghee to the Navarna mantra with 'svaha' — 108 times or fewer. Finish with the purnahuti of a ghee-filled coconut, sprinkle water around the kund and do the aarti.

What does Maha Navami mean?

'Navami' is the ninth day of the lunar fortnight, and Maha Navami, 'the great ninth', is the ninth day of Sharad Navratri, the last day of its worship before Vijayadashami.

Are Maha Navami and Ram Navami the same?

No. Ram Navami is Chaitra Shukla Navami, in March or April, Rama's birthday and the end of Chaitra Navratri; Maha Navami is Ashwin Shukla Navami, in September or October, the end of Sharad Navratri.

Why are Ashtami and Navami on the same day in some years?

Because a tithi does not match a calendar day. When Ashtami holds the sunrise and Navami begins later the same day, the morning carries the Ashtami rites and the afternoon the Navami ones, with the Sandhi Puja between them. This year Navami runs 6:28 AM to 9:02 AM (9 Oct) in New Delhi.

When should the Navratri fast be broken?

Many families break it on Navami after the havan and Kanya Pujan. The dharma texts put the parana on Dashami, after Navami has ended; in New Delhi Navami runs 6:28 AM to 9:02 AM (9 Oct), so those following that rule eat after it ends.

What bhog is offered to Maa Siddhidatri?

The popular day-by-day list gives sesame to Siddhidatri — til laddus or sesame with jaggery — and many homes also offer the halwa, puri and chana made for Kanya Pujan. Offer it with tulsi or a flower and share it as prasad.

Which aarti is sung on Navami?

The Durga aarti 'Jai Ambe Gauri', given in full above, is sung on every day of Navratri, including Navami, since it praises the Goddess in all her forms. Some families add a short aarti of Siddhidatri after it.

Which colour is worn on Navami?

The colour of each Navratri day follows the weekday, as the Navratri colours list sets it; the ninth day takes its weekday's second colour, so that no colour repeats across the nine days. Check this year's list on the Navratri colours page.
