The date in New Delhi

Saturday, 20 February 2027

Magha Purnima is not a Gregorian date. It is Shukla paksha tithi 15 of Magha in the amanta reckoning, and the Gregorian day it lands on moves by up to a month between years because twelve lunations fall about eleven days short of a solar year.

Sunrise in New Delhi
20 Feb, 6:55 AM

Sunrise in New Delhi falls at 6:55 AM on that day, and that is the instant the tithi has to be running at for the day to carry the observance. It is computed for this city rather than assumed, because it is what decides the date.

This year the tithi is skipped (kshaya). Purnima begins after one sunrise and ends before the next, so it touches neither and the usual rule cannot pick a day. The observance is not cancelled: it is kept on the day the tithi runs through, which is the date above. Saying so matters — a page that printed the date alone would be implying a rule that did not actually apply this year.

The two instants above are the astronomy and are not in dispute. The day is an interpretation of them: this observance is decided at sunrise, so it belongs to the day whose sunrise the tithi carries — not simply to the day the tithi begins.

Magha Purnima muhurat

Magha Purnima, the full moon of Magha, is the great bathing day that closes the holy month of Magh: pilgrims bathe at the Sangam in Prayagraj, where the month of Kalpavas ends, families give daan and keep the Satyanarayan katha, and followers of Guru Ravidas celebrate his birth. In New Delhi it falls on Saturday, 20 February 2027; the holy dip is traditionally taken at Brahma muhurta, 5:13 AM to 6:04 AM, and Purnima runs 8:00 AM to 4:53 AM (21 Feb).

Holy dip (Brahma Muhurta)5:13 AM to 6:04 AMBrahma muhurta on the Purnima morning.

The muhurtas before dawn on Magha Purnima, the bathing time tradition prizes most: at the Sangam, in the Ganga, the Narmada or any river, or at home with Ganga jal in the water. The dawn bath belongs to the festival day, so in a year when Purnima itself begins after dawn, bathers still keep it, and the daan and the fast follow the hours of Purnima.

Sunrise (arghya to the Sun)6:55 AMThe upper edge of the Sun on the horizon, with refraction.

After the bath, water is offered to the rising Sun from a copper lota, as on every bathing day of Magh.

Those who keep the Purnima fast offer water and milk to the full moon as it rises, and break the fast after it.

Puja vidhi · step by step at home

Magha Purnima puja vidhi

  1. Bathe before sunrise

Bathe at Brahma muhurta: at the Sangam or a river if you can do so safely, at home if not, with a few drops of Ganga jal and a pinch of black sesame in the water. The cold is real in February; the elderly and the unwell should bathe at home in warm water, which tradition accepts as the same snan.

  2. Offer water to the Sun

Offer arghya to the rising Sun from a copper lota with red flowers and rice, saying Om Suryaya Namah, as on every morning of the Magh snan.

  3. Take the sankalp

Hold water, rice, sesame and a flower, say your name, gotra and place, and that you keep the snan, daan and vrat of Magha Purnima; let the water fall.

  4. Worship Vishnu

Set up an image of Vishnu, as Satyanarayan or as Madhav, the form worshipped at Prayag in Magh. Offer water, panchamrit, yellow sandalwood, yellow flowers, tulsi leaves, fruits and a lamp, and say Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.

  5. Give the daan

While Purnima runs, give sesame, jaggery, ghee, rice or flour, a blanket or warm clothes and some money to someone in need, a temple or a priest; feeding people is counted the best daan of the day.

  6. Keep the fast

Those who fast take fruit, milk and water through the day, or one simple sattvik meal; the fast is kept till moonrise.

  7. Hold the Satyanarayan katha

In the day or after sunset, set up a kalash and Satyanarayan's image on a chowki, worship Ganesh first and then Satyanarayan, read or hear the five chapters of the katha with the family, and offer panjiri, panchamrit, bananas and tulsi.

  8. Aarti

Sing Om Jai Jagdish Hare with a ghee lamp or camphor, and share the prasad with everyone present; by the katha's own lesson, prasad offered to you is never refused.

  9. Arghya to the full moon

At moonrise, offer water mixed with a little milk, white flowers and rice to the full moon, say the Moon's verse, and break the fast.

  10. Lamps at the tulsi and the water

Light a ghee lamp at the tulsi and, where it is the custom, float a lamp on the river; on the Sangam, the Kalpavasis complete their month's vow with a last dip and daan.

Katha · the story and its meaning

Magha Purnima katha and significance

The katha

Puranic tradition, above all the Magha Mahatmya of the Padma Purana, praises the bath of the month of Magh: it is said that Vishnu dwells in the waters in this month and that the gods themselves come to the Sangam at Prayag to bathe. The month's bathing begins on Paush Purnima and is completed on Magha Purnima, which is why this full moon draws the largest crowds of the Magh Mela after Mauni Amavasya.

The katha most homes hear on this Purnima is the Satyanarayan katha. Its five chapters tell of a poor Brahmin of Kashi to whom Vishnu, in the form of an old Brahmin, taught the vrat; of a woodcutter who kept it; of the merchant Sadhu, who vowed the puja for a child and kept putting it off, and suffered until he kept his word; of his daughter Kalavati, who left the prasad untouched in her hurry to meet her husband and saw his boat vanish, until she went back and took it; and of King Tungadhwaj, who scorned the prasad of cowherds. Its lesson is simple: keep the vow you made in need, and never slight prasad.

The same full moon is the birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas, the saint-poet of the Bhakti movement born at Seer Goverdhanpur near Varanasi, whose hymns are part of the Guru Granth Sahib. He sang of Begampura, a city without sorrow, where no one is ranked above another; his followers celebrate the day with kirtan of his bani, langar and processions.

Why it is kept

Magha Purnima completes the month of Magh snan and the Kalpavas at Prayagraj, where pilgrims live for a month in tents on the sands of the Sangam, bathe daily, eat once a day and listen to discourses; on this day they take a last dip, give daan and go home. It is one of the six great bathing days of the Magh Mela, with Paush Purnima, Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchami and Maha Shivratri.

Like every Purnima it is a day for the Satyanarayan vrat, the fast to moonrise and daan; it is also Lalita Jayanti in the Shakta tradition and Guru Ravidas Jayanti. In the purnimanta calendar of North India it is the last day of Magha, and Phalguna, the month of Holi, begins the next morning.

Upay · traditional practice

Magha Purnima upay: traditional remedies

Sesame in the bath

Add a pinch of black sesame and a few drops of Ganga jal to the bath water before dawn. Tradition holds that the Magh bath, even at home, purifies the year.

Feed someone

Give a meal, or grain, to someone in need while Purnima runs. Of all the daan of Magh, tradition counts annadaan, the gift of food, among the highest.

Sesame, jaggery and a blanket

Give sesame, jaggery and a blanket or warm clothes; the nights are still cold, and these are the classical gifts of the month.

The Satyanarayan katha

Hold the Satyanarayan katha with the family, or listen to it in a temple. Families keep it on Purnimas as a prayer of gratitude for the household.

A lamp at the tulsi

Light a ghee lamp at the tulsi in the evening and go round it once with folded hands; it is believed to be dear to Vishnu.

Arghya to the full moon

Offer water mixed with milk to the rising moon with the Moon's verse. Tradition links the full moon to a calm mind, and many keep this through the year on Purnimas.

The custom, in short

Magha Purnima do's and don'ts

Do

  • Bathe before sunrise, with Ganga jal and a little sesame in the water.
  • Offer water to the Sun and, at moonrise, to the full moon.
  • Give daan while Purnima runs, food above all.
  • Hold or hear the Satyanarayan katha and share its prasad.
  • Keep the day sattvik: fruit, milk and simple food.
  • Light a lamp at the tulsi in the evening.
  • At a crowded ghat, keep children close and follow the officials' bathing ghats and timings.

Don't

  • Do not let the elderly or the unwell take a cold river dip; a warm bath at home is the same snan.
  • Do not refuse or slight prasad offered to you.
  • Do not eat meat or drink alcohol on the Purnima if you keep the fast or the katha.
  • Do not give torn, spoilt or useless things as daan.
  • Do not quarrel or speak harshly on the day.
  • Do not pluck tulsi leaves on the Purnima itself; pick them the day before.

Every row is computed for New Delhi from the same ephemeris, not looked up. Sunrise decides which day a tithi names, and sunrise differs across India by more than an hour, so a date computed for Delhi can be a day out elsewhere.

Why calendars disagree about this date

There is no single authority that settles a Hindu festival date, and the divergence is genuine rather than sloppy. Three causes account for almost all of it.

  1. A tithi rarely starts at sunrise. One that is running at the deciding moment on two days — or on none — is claimed by both days under different rules.
  2. Month reckoning. North India runs purnimanta, the south and west amanta. The same dark fortnight carries different month names in the two, so an observance defined as "krishna X of month Y" can land a full lunation apart.
  3. Which moment decides. Most vratas belong to the day whose sunrise carries the tithi, but not all: this one is decided at sunrise. Almanacs that apply the sunrise rule to everything move several festivals by a day.

So this page shows its working. If your pandit or your family almanac gives a different day, the instants above will usually show you exactly why — and that is more useful than a date asserted without one.

Common questions

When is Magha Purnima?

Saturday, 20 February 2027. It is Purnima of Shukla paksha in Magha, and that tithi runs from 20 Feb, 8:00 AM to 21 Feb, 4:53 AM.

Why does another calendar give a different Magha Purnima date?

Bengali panjikas compute the same full moon, but a calendar names the festival by the day the Purnima holds at the right time, and that depends on sunrise where it is made. When Purnima begins and ends between two sunrises, Kolkata and Delhi calendars can differ by a day. Choose Kolkata on this page to see the date there.

Why is this marked as a skipped tithi?

Purnima begins after one deciding moment and ends before the next this year, so it touches none — a kshaya tithi. The observance is not cancelled: it is kept on the day the tithi runs through, which is the day given above.

When is Magh Purnima?

In New Delhi, Magha Purnima is on Saturday, 20 February 2027. It is the full moon of Magha, and Purnima runs 8:00 AM to 4:53 AM (21 Feb); when the full moon begins and ends between two sunrises, calendars can differ by a day, so choose your city on this page.

What is the time for the Magh Purnima snan?

Tradition takes the holy dip at Brahma muhurta, the muhurtas before dawn: in New Delhi it is 5:13 AM to 6:04 AM. If you cannot bathe that early, bathe soon after sunrise (6:55 AM). In a year when Purnima begins after dawn, keep the dawn bath of the festival day and give the daan while Purnima runs.

What should be donated on Magh Purnima?

Food above all, then sesame, jaggery, ghee, grain, and a blanket or warm clothes, with a little money, given while Purnima runs to someone in need, a temple or a priest. Give with respect, and never things that are torn or spoilt; feeding a hungry person is counted the best daan of the day.

What is the significance of Magha Purnima?

It completes the month of Magh snan and the Kalpavas at Prayagraj, and it is one of the great bathing days of the Magh Mela. Tradition holds that Vishnu dwells in the waters in Magh, so the bath, the daan and the Satyanarayan katha of this full moon are especially valued. It is also Guru Ravidas Jayanti.

Which vrat katha is read on Magh Purnima?

Most families read or hear the Satyanarayan katha, the five-chapter story of the Satyanarayan vrat, with panjiri and panchamrit as prasad. Its lesson is to keep a vow made in need and never slight prasad. Those keeping the Magh snan also read the Magha Mahatmya, the Purana's praise of the month's bath.

Is Guru Ravidas Jayanti on Magh Purnima?

Yes. Guru Ravidas Jayanti is celebrated on Magha Purnima, so its date in New Delhi is the same, Saturday, 20 February 2027. His followers gather at Seer Goverdhanpur in Varanasi, his birthplace, and hold kirtan of his bani, langar and shobha yatras in Punjab and wherever Ravidassia communities live.

What is Kalpavas?

Kalpavas is the vow of living for the month of Magh on the banks of the Sangam at Prayagraj: the Kalpavasi stays in a simple tent, bathes in the Ganga every day, eats once a day, sleeps on the ground and spends the days in worship and listening to discourses. It begins on Paush Purnima and ends on Magha Purnima with a last dip and daan.

What are the main bathing dates of the Magh Mela?

The six great snans of the Magh Mela at Prayagraj are Paush Purnima, Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchami, Magha Purnima and Maha Shivratri. Each follows the panchang, so its date moves every year; this page gives Magha Purnima's, Saturday, 20 February 2027, and the festival pages give the others.

When is the Magh Purnima fast broken?

The fast is kept from sunrise to moonrise. In New Delhi the moon rises at 5:41 PM; offer it water mixed with a little milk, white flowers and rice, say the Moon's verse, and break the fast with prasad and a simple meal.

Can I take the Magh Purnima snan at home?

Yes. Tradition accepts a bath at home with a few drops of Ganga jal and a little black sesame in the water, with the snan mantra that calls the seven sacred rivers into it. For the elderly, children and anyone unwell, a warm bath at home is the wiser choice in February.

Do Magh Purnima remedies bring good fortune?

No remedy comes with a guarantee. The upay in this guide, from sesame in the bath to feeding someone in need, are traditional acts of purification, gratitude and generosity that families keep on the full moon of Magh. Keep them for what they mean, and seek proper advice for health, money or family matters.
