Dates held back by Guru or Shukra asta

These days clear every other rule, but Jupiter or Venus is inside its combustion orb. Almanacs that count asta only while the planet is invisible list some of them.

Engagement Muhurat rules used on this page

  • Where these rules come from: the vivah rules of the muhurta texts, which the betrothal follows wherever the texts and the published lists agree — the same nakshatras, tithis, yogas, karanas and closed seasons as this site's vivah list, with the two differences below. No large almanac publishes a computed engagement list for a whole year, so the rules are stated here in full rather than matched to someone else's dates.
  • Kharmas is closed: no date while the Sun is in Dhanu (Sagittarius) or Meena (Pisces) (16 December 2025 – 14 January 2026, 15 March 2026 – 14 April 2026 and 16 December 2026 – 14 January 2027).
  • Weekday: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday (the Vedic weekday, which changes at sunrise). Never Tuesday.
  • Nakshatra: the Moon in one of these 11 — Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati.
  • Tithi: any tithi of either fortnight except Amavasya.
  • Yoga and karana: the window avoids the 9 rejected yogas — Atiganda, Ganda, Parigha, Shula, Vaidhriti, Vajra, Vishkamba, Vyaghata and Vyatipata — and the karanas Chatushpada, Kimstughna, Naga, Shakuni and Vishti.
  • Guru and Shukra must be clear of the Sun: no date while Jupiter is within 11° of the Sun or Venus within 10° (8° while retrograde) — the classical combustion (asta) orbs.
  • An adhika month is closed: Adhika Jyeshtha, an adhika month, runs from 17 May 2026 to 15 June 2026.
  • Chaturmas — marked, not closed: Chaturmas (24 July 2026 – 20 November 2026) closes the wedding itself. For the betrothal practice divides: some almanacs close it, others list dates inside it, and many families hold the sagai in Chaturmas and fix the wedding for after Devuthani Ekadashi. Those dates stay on the list, marked — 39 of them in 2026.
  • Rikta tithis: Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi are allowed, as the published vivah lists allow them, and marked — 24 of the 2026 dates carry one.
  • Pitru Paksha: the shraddha fortnight (26 September 2026 – 10 October 2026) falls inside Chaturmas; most families hold no ceremony in it, so its dates carry a mark of their own — 7 of them in 2026.
  • Which rite this is for: the ring exchange, the roka, the tilak or the chunni ceremony — whichever the family treats as the betrothal takes the window.
  • The day: sunrise to the next sunrise, for New Delhi. A day any closed period touches is left out whole; inside the days that remain, the muhurat is the time when every condition above holds at once, for at least 20 minutes.
  • Not checked here: the couple's own charts — kundli matching, and the strength of the Moon and Jupiter from each birth sign — and the lagna at the ceremony. A priest checks these against the two birth charts.
