What the classical texts say

Saturn mahadasha is the period of work, duty and consequence. Well placed — as a yogakaraka, or in its own or exaltation sign — the texts read it as building position, property and authority through discipline; afflicted, they link it to delay, hard work without recognition, chronic complaints and losses that teach patience.

The nine antardashas of Saturn mahadasha

Each antardasha lasts mahadasha years × its lord's years ÷ 120, in the order of the cycle starting with Saturn itself. Lengths are shown as the traditional tables print them (12 months of 30 days); the dasha calculator dates every one exactly for a birth.

By the house it occupies

  • Saturn in the 1st houseSaturn on the lagna gives seriousness, endurance and a slow start: the classical texts read a lean or delicate constitution, a reserved or melancholic manner and early struggles.
  • Saturn in the 2nd houseSaturn in the 2nd makes wealth slow and speech sparing: the texts describe money that is delayed or hard-earned, a terse manner, responsibility for the family and complaints of the teeth or eyes, with savings that grow late and steadily, sometimes through work away from home.
  • Saturn in the 3rd houseSaturn in the 3rd wins by stamina: in this upachaya house a malefic does well, and the texts describe endurance, practical intelligence, success through persistent effort and victory over rivals, with some coolness toward younger siblings.
  • Saturn in the 4th houseIn the 4th house of home and mother Saturn is heavy: the texts read comforts that come late, an older or inherited home that needs work, responsibility for the mother and a sense of carrying burdens privately.
  • Saturn in the 5th houseIn the house of children, intellect and romance Saturn is slow: the texts read delays or worries around children, a serious, cautious intellect and romance that comes late or with responsibility.
  • Saturn in the 6th houseSaturn in the 6th outlasts its opponents: enemies wear out against its patience, debts are paid down slowly but surely and illness is met with discipline — the texts count the house among Saturn's best.
  • Saturn in the 7th houseThe 7th is where Saturn gains directional strength (dig bala), and its classical reading is a marriage that comes late or with responsibility: an older, serious or hard-working spouse, duties within the relationship and partnerships that are slow to build.
  • Saturn in the 8th houseSaturn is the significator of longevity, and the texts give long life in the 8th — together with chronic or slow complaints, obstacles, delayed inheritance and periods of hardship that teach endurance.
  • Saturn in the 9th houseIn the house of dharma and the father Saturn is austere: the classical texts read slow fortune early on, distance from or duty toward the father, and a faith that is unorthodox or tested.
  • Saturn in the 10th houseSaturn in the 10th gives authority earned by work: the texts describe a native who rises through discipline to positions of responsibility and who must guard against a fall from position.
  • Saturn in the 11th houseSaturn in the 11th pays late and keeps paying: the texts describe steady wealth, long life, gains through hard work, land and labour, and loyal, older or influential friends.
  • Saturn in the 12th houseSaturn in the 12th is the hermit's or the exile's placement: the texts mention expenditure, periods of isolation, poor sleep and losses through carelessness, and the same placement gives detachment and a disciplined spiritual practice.

Remedies during Saturn mahadasha

  • Chant the Saturn mantra: Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaischaraya Namah. Sit facing east after sunrise — Saturday is the strongest day for it. Chant 6 malas a day (648 repetitions), keeping count on a 108-bead mala. Keep it up for 40 days without a break — that completes the traditional 23,000.
  • Give a Saturn donation. Give sesame seeds, black gram, iron on Saturday, before noon. Offer it to a labourer, sweeper or the very poor, or to anyone in genuine need. Give quietly, in person, without expecting thanks.
  • Daily practice for Saturn. Feed black dogs and crows; be of service to the elderly. Keep it up every day for 40 days — consistency is the remedy.
