Govardhan Puja is not a Gregorian date. It is Shukla paksha tithi 1 of Kartika in the amanta reckoning, and the Gregorian day it lands on moves by up to a month between years because twelve lunations fall about eleven days short of a solar year.

Sunrise in New Delhi falls at 6:39 AM on that day, and that is the instant the tithi has to be running at for the day to carry the observance. It is computed for this city rather than assumed, because it is what decides the date.

The two instants above are the astronomy and are not in dispute. The day is an interpretation of them: this observance is decided at sunrise, so it belongs to the day whose sunrise the tithi carries — not simply to the day the tithi begins.

Govardhan Puja muhurat

Govardhan Puja, the day after Diwali, is Kartika Shukla Pratipada, when Krishna's lifting of Govardhan hill is remembered with a Govardhan figure in the courtyard and the Annakut, a mountain of food offered to him. In New Delhi it falls on Tuesday, 10 November 2026; the morning puja muhurat is 6:39 AM to 8:49 AM and the evening one is not available this year, as Pratipada does not run then. The same Pratipada is usually the Gujarati new year and, in Maharashtra and Karnataka, Bali Pratipada.

Govardhan Puja (morning)6:39 AM to 8:49 AMPratahkal, the first fifth of the day, while Pratipada runs.

The first fifth of the daylight while Pratipada runs. Most Braj and North Indian homes make the Govardhan figure early and worship it in this window, then offer the Annakut at midday.

Govardhan Puja (evening)Pratipada does not run during this window this year.

The last fifth of the daylight while Pratipada runs. Families who cook the Annakut through the day worship in the evening, and in a year when Pratipada begins after the morning, this is the window panchangs give.

Sunrise6:39 AMThe upper edge of the Sun on the horizon, with refraction.

The morning window opens at sunrise in New Delhi; the Govardhan figure is usually made just before it.

Sunset5:30 PMThe upper edge of the Sun leaving the horizon.

The evening window closes at sunset; lamps are then lit around the Govardhan figure.

Puja vidhi · step by step at home

Govardhan Puja vidhi

  1. Bathe and clear a space

Bathe early and clean a spot in the courtyard, at the entrance or on a wide board or plate, where the Govardhan figure can stay for the day.

  2. Make the Govardhan figure

Shape Govardhan from fresh cow dung, the traditional material, as a reclining figure or a small hill, with a hollow at the navel. If you have no cow dung, use clean clay, a mound of food, or a Giriraj stone or picture.

  3. Decorate it

Set small figures of cows, calves and cowherds around it, with Krishna. Stick in blades of grass, small twigs, cotton and flowers, and draw a rangoli around the base.

  4. Worship in the muhurat

In the morning or evening window, offer roli, rice, flowers, water and incense. Pour milk, curd, honey, Ganga jal and batashe into the navel, and offer kheel-batashe and sweets.

  5. Say the Govardhan verse

With folded hands say Govardhana dharadhara, the Govardhan verse, and pray for the well-being of the home, the cattle and the harvest.

  6. Seven parikramas

Walk around the Govardhan figure seven times, clockwise, as pilgrims walk around the hill in Braj; many pour a thin stream of water or milk from a lota as they go.

  7. Offer the Annakut

Arrange the dishes cooked for the day, the mixed-vegetable Annakut sabzi, kadhi, rice, puri, bajra and sweets, in a mound before Krishna, with tulsi on each, and offer them.

  8. Worship the cows

If you can, bathe and decorate cows and calves, put a tilak on them, offer flowers and feed them green fodder and jaggery, saying the cow verse. A gaushala visit serves the same purpose in a city.

  9. Aarti

Sing Aarti Kunjbihari ki, the Krishna aarti that names him Giridhar, the holder of the mountain, with a ghee lamp or camphor.

  10. Share the Annakut

Distribute the Annakut as prasad to family, neighbours and anyone who comes; the abundance is meant to be shared.

  11. Lamps in the evening

At dusk light diyas around the Govardhan figure. The figure is cleared respectfully the next day and the dung or clay returned to a garden or field.

Katha · the story and its meaning

Govardhan Puja katha and significance

The katha

Every year the cowherds of Vraja prepared a great sacrifice to Indra, lord of the rains. The Bhagavata Purana tells how young Krishna asked his father Nanda why: their life came from their cows and from Govardhan hill, whose grass and streams fed them, so it was Govardhan, the cows and the brahmins they should honour. The village cooked a mountain of food and offered it to the hill, and Krishna, taking a vast form, declared himself the hill and accepted it. That was the first Annakut.

Indra, insulted, sent storm clouds to drown Vraja under torrents of rain and wind. Krishna lifted Govardhan with one hand as easily as a child lifts a mushroom, and the people and their cattle sheltered beneath it for seven days without hunger or thirst, until Indra saw his pride was useless and called back the clouds.

Indra then came down with Surabhi, the cow of plenty, asked forgiveness and bathed Krishna in her milk, naming him Govinda, lord of the cows. So the day honours the hill, the cows and the food that sustain a village, and the god who protects those who trust him.

Why it is kept

Govardhan Puja is gratitude made visible: for the hill, the rain, the cattle and the new harvest of the season, shared as the Annakut, literally a mountain of food. It falls on Kartika Shukla Pratipada, the first day of the bright fortnight after Diwali, and in Braj it is as important as Diwali itself.

The story is also about pride and protection: Indra's anger breaks against Krishna's care for the people who trusted him. The same Pratipada opens the new year for Gujarati families (Bestu Varas), honours King Bali in Maharashtra and Karnataka, and in parts of North India is Vishwakarma Puja, when tools and machines are worshipped.

Upay · traditional practice

Govardhan Puja upay: traditional remedies

Serve the cows

Feed cows and calves green fodder and jaggery, at home or at a gaushala. On the day of Govinda, tradition counts care of cattle as worship.

Share the Annakut

Cook a little extra and share the Annakut with neighbours, workers and people in need; the day's blessing is believed to grow as the food is shared.

Seven parikramas

Walk around your Govardhan figure seven times saying the Govardhan verse, as pilgrims walk the hill in Braj.

A lamp at Govardhan

Light diyas around the Govardhan figure at dusk as thanks for the shelter of the past year.

Waste nothing

Eat, share or feed to animals all the Annakut offered; letting the food spoil goes against the meaning of the day.

Visit or remember Braj

Families who can, walk the Govardhan parikrama in Braj; others remember it by reading the tenth book of the Bhagavata, where the story is told.

The custom, in short

Govardhan Puja do's and don'ts

Do

  • Make the Govardhan figure in the morning and keep it clean through the day.
  • Worship in the morning or evening window while Pratipada runs.
  • Cook the Annakut fresh, with the season's vegetables and grains.
  • Walk around the figure seven times.
  • Feed and honour cows and calves.
  • Share the prasad widely, and greet elders for the new year where it is kept.
  • Keep the day vegetarian and simple, as most families do.

Don't

  • Do not step on or over the Govardhan figure.
  • Do not collect dung from dirty places; use fresh cow dung or clean clay.
  • Do not let the Annakut spoil or go to waste.
  • Do not mistreat animals; cows are fed and decorated, never forced.
  • Many families avoid meat, eggs and alcohol on the day; respect the custom of your house.
  • Do not throw the figure away carelessly; return the dung or clay to a garden or field.

Across India

Gujarat
Bestu Varas, the new year: families visit temples, greet each other with Saal Mubarak, and Swaminarayan temples display a vast Annakut.
Maharashtra and Karnataka
Bali Pratipada or Padwa honours King Bali; in Maharashtra wives perform an aarti of their husbands and couples exchange gifts.
Punjab, Haryana and Delhi
Vishwakarma Puja is kept on this day: workshops, factories and tools are cleaned and worshipped.

Every row is computed for New Delhi from the same ephemeris, not looked up. Sunrise decides which day a tithi names, and sunrise differs across India by more than an hour, so a date computed for Delhi can be a day out elsewhere.

Why calendars disagree about this date

There is no single authority that settles a Hindu festival date, and the divergence is genuine rather than sloppy. Three causes account for almost all of it.

  1. A tithi rarely starts at sunrise. One that is running at the deciding moment on two days — or on none — is claimed by both days under different rules.
  2. Month reckoning. North India runs purnimanta, the south and west amanta. The same dark fortnight carries different month names in the two, so an observance defined as "krishna X of month Y" can land a full lunation apart.
  3. Which moment decides. Most vratas belong to the day whose sunrise carries the tithi, but not all: this one is decided at sunrise. Almanacs that apply the sunrise rule to everything move several festivals by a day.

So this page shows its working. If your pandit or your family almanac gives a different day, the instants above will usually show you exactly why — and that is more useful than a date asserted without one.

Common questions

When is Govardhan Puja?

Tuesday, 10 November 2026. It is Pratipada of Shukla paksha in Kartika, and that tithi runs from 9 Nov, 12:32 PM to 10 Nov, 2:00 PM.

Is Govardhan Puja the day after Diwali in 2026?

Not this year. Diwali's Lakshmi Puja is Sun 8 Nov, and Amavasya runs until 9 Nov, 12:32 PM. Govardhan Puja is kept on Kartika Shukla Pratipada, the next tithi, which falls on Tue 10 Nov — two days after Lakshmi Puja.

Why does another calendar give a different Govardhan Puja date?

Three honest reasons. The tithi can be running at the deciding moment on two days or on none. North India reckons the month purnimanta and the south and west amanta, which names the same krishna fortnight differently. And almanacs differ on which moment of the day decides an observance. The instants above are the astronomy; the day is an interpretation of them.

What is the Govardhan Puja muhurat in New Delhi?

In New Delhi on Tuesday, 10 November 2026 the morning muhurat is 6:39 AM to 8:49 AM, the first fifth of the daylight, and the evening muhurat is not available this year, as Pratipada does not run then, the last fifth, both while Pratipada runs. Most homes worship in the morning; when Pratipada begins after the morning window, the evening one is used.

What is Govardhan Puja?

It is the day after Diwali, Kartika Shukla Pratipada, when Krishna's lifting of Govardhan hill to shelter Vraja from Indra's storm is remembered. Families shape a Govardhan figure, often of cow dung, worship it, walk around it seven times, honour cows and offer Krishna the Annakut, a mountain of food that is then shared.

How is Govardhan Puja done at home?

Bathe early, shape a Govardhan figure in the courtyard with a hollow navel, decorate it with cows, cowherds, grass and flowers, and worship it in the muhurat with roli, rice, flowers, milk and batashe. Walk around it seven times, offer the Annakut to Krishna, honour cows if you can, sing the aarti and share the food. The steps above give the order.

How do I make the Govardhan figure, and what if I have no cow dung?

Traditionally it is shaped from fresh cow dung as a reclining figure or a small hill, with a hollow navel and small cows and cowherds around it. Without cow dung, use clean clay or a mound of food, or worship a Giriraj stone or a picture of Krishna holding the hill; the devotion matters more than the material.

What is Annakut, and is it the same as Govardhan Puja and chappan bhog?

Annakut means a mountain of food: the many dishes offered to Krishna on Govardhan Puja, as the people of Vraja offered them to the hill. It is part of the same day, so the names are used together. Chappan bhog, fifty-six dishes, is how temples often present the Annakut; at home, offer as many dishes as you can make.

What is cooked for the Annakut?

The centre is the Annakut sabzi, many of the season's vegetables cooked together, with kadhi, rice, bajra or millet khichdi, puri, kheer and sweets. Each dish is offered with a tulsi leaf. Many families cook simply and without onion and garlic for the offering, then share it with everyone.

Why is Govardhan Puja celebrated the day after Diwali?

It is kept on Kartika Shukla Pratipada, the first day of the bright fortnight, which tradition remembers as the day Vraja offered its Annakut to Govardhan instead of the sacrifice to Indra. Diwali's Amavasya falls the evening before, so in most years the two run on consecutive days.

What is the story of Govardhan Puja?

The Bhagavata Purana tells how Krishna persuaded the cowherds to worship Govardhan, their cows and the brahmins instead of holding their yearly sacrifice to Indra. Indra sent a terrible storm; Krishna lifted the hill with one hand and sheltered everyone under it for seven days. Humbled, Indra came with the cow Surabhi and named Krishna Govinda.

Which mantra is chanted on Govardhan Puja?

The Govardhan verse, Govardhana dharadhara Gokula-trana-karaka, is said while worshipping the figure; the cow verse, Lakshmir ya lokapalanam, while honouring the cows; and Krishnaya Vasudevaya or the Hare Krishna names while offering the Annakut. All of them, with meaning, are in the mantra section.

Which aarti is sung on Govardhan Puja?

Aarti Kunjbihari ki, the Krishna aarti whose refrain names him Shri Giridhar, the holder of the mountain, is the one most homes sing; Braj also sings Shri Govardhan Maharaj in praise of the hill. The full text of Aarti Kunjbihari ki is given above with a transliteration.

What samagri is needed for Govardhan Puja?

Fresh cow dung or clean clay for the figure, small cows and cowherds, grass, twigs, cotton and flowers to decorate it, roli, rice, mauli, milk, curd, honey and batashe for the navel, diyas, incense, a lota for the parikrama, the Annakut dishes, and green fodder with jaggery for the cows. The list above gives substitutes.

How many parikramas and diyas are customary?

Seven parikramas around the Govardhan figure are customary, in imitation of the pilgrims who walk around the hill in Braj; some pour a thin stream of water or milk from a lota as they go. There is no fixed number of diyas: light some during the morning puja and a ring of them around the figure at dusk.

Is it true that one should not study or eat non-vegetarian food on Govardhan Puja?

No scripture forbids study on the day; some families simply keep it as a holiday from work and books, and you may follow your family's custom. Most households keep the day vegetarian because it is a day of offering food to Krishna, and they avoid meat, eggs and alcohol.

How is Govardhan Puja kept at ISKCON and in Braj temples?

ISKCON temples build a hill of sweets as Govardhan, worship it with kirtan and walk around it before the feast. In Braj, temples offer a towering Annakut and pilgrims walk the parikrama of the hill, about twenty-one kilometres,, while Nathdwara's Shrinathji receives a mountain of rice.

Why are cows worshipped on Govardhan Puja?

Krishna's argument in the story was that Vraja lived by its cows and its hill, and Indra himself later named him Govinda, lord of the cows. So on this day cows and calves are bathed, decorated, given a tilak and fed jaggery and green fodder; a visit to a gaushala keeps the custom in a city.
