Sunday, 9 May 2027

Akshaya Tritiya is not a Gregorian date. It is Shukla paksha tithi 3 of Vaishakha in the amanta reckoning, and the Gregorian day it lands on moves by up to a month between years because twelve lunations fall about eleven days short of a solar year.

Sunrise in New Delhi falls at 5:34 AM on that day, and that is the instant the tithi has to be running at for the day to carry the observance. It is computed for this city rather than assumed, because it is what decides the date.

The two instants above are the astronomy and are not in dispute. The day is an interpretation of them: this observance is decided at sunrise, so it belongs to the day whose sunrise the tithi carries — not simply to the day the tithi begins.

Akshaya Tritiya muhurat

Akshaya Tritiya, the third day of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha, is the day whose good deeds are believed never to wane (akshaya): families worship Vishnu and Lakshmi, give water, food and grain in charity, and buy gold or begin new work without searching for a muhurat. In New Delhi it falls on Sunday, 9 May 2027. The puja muhurat is 5:34 AM to 9:03 AM, and the gold buying time, which is the whole of Tritiya, is 11:43 AM (8 May) to 5:34 AM; 5:34 AM to 9:03 AM.

Puja vidhi · step by step at home

Akshaya Tritiya puja vidhi

  1. Bathe before sunrise

Rise early and bathe before sunrise, ideally in Brahma muhurta. A dip in the Ganga or a holy river is the classic start of the day; at home, add a few drops of Ganga jal to the bath water. Wear clean clothes; yellow and white are traditional for Vishnu.

  2. Take the sankalp

Sit facing east or north. Sip water three times (achaman), then hold water, unbroken rice (akshat), a flower and a coin in your right hand, say your name, gotra and place, and resolve to worship Lakshmi-Narayan on Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya, to give in charity and, if you keep it, to fast. Let the water fall to the ground.

  3. Set up the altar

Cover a chowki with a yellow cloth and seat Vishnu, or Lakshmi-Narayan, or Krishna as Laddu Gopal, with Lakshmi beside him and Ganesh in front. Place a kalash of water with mango leaves on a small heap of rice, and light a ghee lamp and incense.

  4. Worship Ganesh first

Invoke Ganesh with Om Gam Ganapataye Namah and offer water, roli, akshat, durva grass and a sweet. Do not offer tulsi to Ganesh.

  5. Bathe and adorn Vishnu and Lakshmi

Bathe a metal idol with water, then panchamrit, then clean water again; for a picture, sprinkle water with a flower. Apply sandalwood paste, the special offering of this summer festival. Offer a yellow cloth or mauli, kumkum to Lakshmi, akshat (the unbroken rice whose name the day shares), yellow flowers or lotuses, and tulsi leaves to Vishnu.

  6. The summer naivedya

Offer barley (jau) or sattu, soaked chana dal with jaggery, cucumber, mango and other fruits of the season, kheer or a sweet, and a glass of cool water or sherbet. The offerings are cooling because the day falls in the heat of Vaishakha.

  7. Worship what is new

If you have bought gold, silver, a coin, a utensil or anything for the home, or are opening a business or new account books, place it before Lakshmi and mark it with roli and akshat before you use it.

  8. Mantra and recitation

Chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya on a tulsi mala of 108 beads, and Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah for Lakshmi. Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama if you know it, and read or listen to the katha of the day.

  9. The daan of the day

Charity is the heart of Akshaya Tritiya. The classic gift is an udakumbh, an earthen pot of cool water, covered and given with a little jaggery or a sweet; with it go things that help in the heat, such as a hand fan, an umbrella, sandals, sattu, curd, rice, wheat or barley, and clothes. Give to a priest, a temple or anyone in need.

  10. Remember the ancestors

Many families offer water with sesame to their ancestors (tarpan) or give a pot of water in their memory, since the Puranas count this Tritiya among the yugadi tithis, the days the ages began, when such offerings carry endless merit.

  11. Aarti and the prayer for pardon

Sing Om Jai Jagdish Hare with a ghee lamp or camphor, offer flowers with folded hands, and ask pardon for any mistake made in the puja.

  12. Begin something good

The day is an abujh muhurat, auspicious in itself, so this is when families start new work, sign for a home, hold a griha pravesh or a wedding, sow the first seed, or begin a practice of japa, study or saving they mean to keep.

  13. The fast and the meal

Those who fast eat once, a sattvik meal after the puja or in the evening, or keep to fruit and milk. Most families simply keep the day's food sattvik and share the prasad with everyone at home.

Katha · the story and its meaning

Akshaya Tritiya katha and significance

The katha

Puranic tradition holds that whatever is done on Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya, a bath in a holy river, japa, a fire offering or a gift, does not decay but stays with the doer as akshaya, imperishable merit. The Vishnu Purana counts this Tritiya among the four yugadi tithis, the days on which the ages began, when water and sesame offered to the ancestors bring endless merit, and popular tradition names it the first day of the Treta Yuga.

The katha read on the day, popularly traced to the Bhavishya Purana, is the story of Dharmadas, a poor but devout merchant. Hearing from learned men how great the merit of this Tritiya was, he bathed in the Ganga, worshipped the gods and gave what he could: pots of water, grain, salt, ghee, curd, jaggery and clothes, though his family worried about how they would live. He kept the day this way all his life. In his next birth, the story says, he was born a king, wealthy and generous, and what he gave on Akshaya Tritiya never ran out.

Many other events are remembered on this day in popular tradition: the birth of Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu; Vyasa beginning to dictate the Mahabharata to Ganesh; Krishna welcoming his poor friend Sudama, who brought only a handful of beaten rice and went home to find his hut turned into a palace; and Kubera being made the keeper of the treasure of the gods. These are beliefs kept by families and temples rather than events every scripture dates to this Tritiya.

For Jains the day remembers Rishabhanatha, the first Tirthankara, who after more than a year without food accepted sugarcane juice from Prince Shreyansa at Hastinapur. Those who keep the long varshitap fast end it on Akshaya Tritiya with sugarcane juice.

Why it is kept

Akshaya means that which does not decay. Tradition treats the day as an abujh muhurat, auspicious in itself, so weddings, griha pravesh, the opening of a business and important purchases need no further muhurat; in Maharashtra it is one of the sade teen muhurat, the three and a half most auspicious days of the year, with Gudi Padwa, Vijayadashami and the half day of Bali Pratipada. Astrologers add that the Sun is in Mesha, its sign of exaltation, through Vaishakha, and that the Moon on this Tritiya is usually near Vrishabha, its own sign of exaltation.

It is a festival of the summer. Its gifts, a pot of cool water, a fan, an umbrella, sandals, sattu, are what the heat makes precious, and Vishnu is cooled with sandalwood. It also opens seasons: the Himalayan shrines of Gangotri and Yamunotri open their doors, the chariots for Puri's Rath Yatra begin to be built and the Chandan Yatra starts, farmers in many regions sow the first seed, and Jains end the varshitap fast.

Upay · traditional practice

Akshaya Tritiya upay: traditional remedies

The udakumbh daan

Fill an earthen pot with cool water, cover it, add a little jaggery or a sweet and give it to someone who needs it, or to a temple. It is the gift tradition names first for this summer day, and it is believed to bring lasting merit.

Water for everyone

Set up a pot of water (a pyau) at your gate or shop for passers-by, and keep bowls of water for birds and animals through the summer, beginning on this day.

Something new, within your means

If you buy gold or silver, a small coin is enough; worship it before Lakshmi and keep it with the household's savings. Folk belief holds that barley bought on this day is as auspicious as gold, so many families buy a little jau instead. Never borrow to buy.

Sandalwood for Vishnu

Offer sandalwood paste to Vishnu or Laddu Gopal, as Vrindavan does for Banke Bihari, and tulsi leaves with it. It is the cooling seva of the day.

Vishnu Sahasranama

Recite or listen to the thousand names of Vishnu in the morning, or chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya 108 times. Families keep it as a prayer for a home that does not lack.

Begin a lasting good

Because the merit of the day is said not to decay, many begin something they mean to keep: planting a tree, a regular gift to a cause, a daily japa or a savings habit.

Water and sesame for the ancestors

Offer water with sesame to your ancestors, or give a pot of water in their memory, as the Puranas recommend on the yugadi tithis.

Grain for those who need it

Give rice, wheat, barley, sattu or a meal to people in need, and fodder to cows. Tradition values the gift made with respect above its size.

The custom, in short

Akshaya Tritiya do's and don'ts

Do

  • Bathe early, ideally before sunrise, and worship Vishnu and Lakshmi in the morning muhurat.
  • Give something in charity, above all water and food that help in the summer heat.
  • Offer sandalwood, tulsi and akshat to Vishnu, and yellow flowers.
  • Worship anything new you buy before Lakshmi before using it.
  • Begin planned new work, a griha pravesh or a good habit on this abujh day.
  • Keep the day's food sattvik and share the prasad.
  • Remember the ancestors with water, as many families do.
  • Buy within your means; a small coin, a new utensil or a little barley keeps the custom.

Don't

  • Do not take a loan or overspend to buy gold for the festival.
  • Do not turn away anyone who asks for water on this day.
  • Do not offer tulsi to Ganesh.
  • Do not quarrel or speak harshly; the day is kept for giving and good beginnings.
  • Do not eat meat or drink alcohol on the day, by the custom of most families.
  • Do not put the puja off until after Tritiya has ended, if you can help it; the tithi times are above.
  • Do not treat any remedy as a guarantee of wealth; keep the customs for their meaning.

Every row is computed for New Delhi from the same ephemeris, not looked up. Sunrise decides which day a tithi names, and sunrise differs across India by more than an hour, so a date computed for Delhi can be a day out elsewhere.

Why calendars disagree about this date

There is no single authority that settles a Hindu festival date, and the divergence is genuine rather than sloppy. Three causes account for almost all of it.

  1. A tithi rarely starts at sunrise. One that is running at the deciding moment on two days — or on none — is claimed by both days under different rules.
  2. Month reckoning. North India runs purnimanta, the south and west amanta. The same dark fortnight carries different month names in the two, so an observance defined as "krishna X of month Y" can land a full lunation apart.
  3. Which moment decides. Most vratas belong to the day whose sunrise carries the tithi, but not all: this one is decided at sunrise. Almanacs that apply the sunrise rule to everything move several festivals by a day.

So this page shows its working. If your pandit or your family almanac gives a different day, the instants above will usually show you exactly why — and that is more useful than a date asserted without one.

Common questions

When is Akshaya Tritiya?

Sunday, 9 May 2027. It is Tritiya of Shukla paksha in Vaishakha, and that tithi runs from 8 May, 11:43 AM to 9 May, 9:03 AM.

Why does another calendar give a different Akshaya Tritiya date?

Three honest reasons. The tithi can be running at the deciding moment on two days or on none. North India reckons the month purnimanta and the south and west amanta, which names the same krishna fortnight differently. And almanacs differ on which moment of the day decides an observance. The instants above are the astronomy; the day is an interpretation of them.

No. The Puranas praise giving on this day far more than buying: what is given is said to become imperishable. Buying gold is a later custom resting on the same belief, that what is acquired on an akshaya day stays and grows. If you buy, buy within your means; a small coin is enough, and many families buy barley, an earthen pot or a new utensil instead. Never borrow for it, and treat prices and investments as your own decision, not the calendar's.

What does Akshaya Tritiya mean?

Akshaya means imperishable, that which never diminishes, and Tritiya is the third lunar day. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat call it Akha Teej.

Why is Akshaya Tritiya celebrated?

It is kept with Vishnu and Lakshmi puja, generous charity and new beginnings.

Is Akshaya Tritiya good for marriage and griha pravesh?

Yes. In tradition it is an abujh muhurat, a day auspicious in itself, so weddings, griha pravesh, engagements and the start of a business are held on it without working out a separate muhurat; in Rajasthan it is one of the busiest wedding days of the year. Families who still want a precise moment for the ceremony use the Abhijit muhurat (11:50 AM to 12:44 PM) or a good choghadiya of the day.
