Lagna and rashi in one minute
Your lagna (ascendant) is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. Your rashi is the sign the Moon was in. The lagna changes about every two hours; the rashi changes every two to two and a half days. Both are read in the sidereal zodiac in Vedic astrology, and both appear in every kundli, but they answer different questions.
| Lagna (ascendant) | Rashi (Moon sign) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The sign rising in the east at birth | The sign the Moon occupied at birth |
| What decides it | Birth time and birth place | Mostly the date; the time only near a sign change |
| How often it changes | About every two hours | Every two to two and a half days |
| Read for | The body, temperament and the whole frame of houses | The mind, feelings, dasha, transits and matching |
| Used by | Every house-based judgement in a kundli | Rashifal, Sade Sati, gochar, Ashtakoot matching |

What the lagna is
As the Earth turns, each of the twelve signs rises over the eastern horizon in turn, all twelve in a day. The one rising at your birth is your lagna, and the exact degree rising is the ascendant degree.
The lagna is the first house. Counting on from it gives the other eleven houses: the second sign from the lagna is the second house (family and money), the seventh is the seventh house (partnership), the tenth is the tenth house (work) and so on. The kundli on this site uses whole-sign houses, so each sign is exactly one house.
The planet that rules the lagna sign is the lagna lord, and its condition is read as a key to the chart as a whole. The lagna guide goes through it step by step.
What the rashi is
Your rashi is your Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac. It is the sign an Indian family means when they ask for the baby's rashi, and the sign Indian rashifal is written for. The Moon also sits in one of the 27 nakshatras, and the nakshatra and its pada sit inside the rashi.
Reading the chart with the Moon's sign as the first house is called Chandra lagna. Classical practice checks important results from the lagna and from the Moon, which is why both appear at the top of most kundlis. The rashi guide covers how it is found.
How fast each one changes
On average a lagna rises for about two hours, since twelve signs rise in one turn of the Earth. But the signs do not take equal time. Because the zodiac lies at an angle to the equator, some signs rise steeply and quickly, others slowly, and the difference grows with latitude.
| Lagna (rising sign) | New Delhi | Chennai |
|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | 1 h 35 min | 1 h 48 min |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | 1 h 56 min | 2 h 02 min |
| Mithun (Gemini) | 2 h 15 min | 2 h 12 min |
| Kark (Cancer) | 2 h 20 min | 2 h 09 min |
| Sinh (Leo) | 2 h 17 min | 2 h 03 min |
| Kanya (Virgo) | 2 h 16 min | 2 h 02 min |
| Tula (Libra) | 2 h 19 min | 2 h 07 min |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | 2 h 19 min | 2 h 12 min |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | 2 h 04 min | 2 h 07 min |
| Makar (Capricorn) | 1 h 42 min | 1 h 53 min |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | 1 h 27 min | 1 h 42 min |
| Meen (Pisces) | 1 h 25 min | 1 h 40 min |
In New Delhi, Meen (Pisces) rises fastest, in 1 h 25 min, and Kark (Cancer) slowest, in 2 h 20 min. Chennai sits much closer to the equator, so its range is narrower: from 1 h 40 min to 2 h 12 min. The rising times move only a little through the year; what changes is the clock time each sign rises at, about four minutes earlier every day.
The Moon is far slower by comparison. It needs two to two and a half days to cross one sign, so a rashi is shared by everyone born across those days, in every city, while the lagna turns through all twelve signs many times over.
Why the birth time decides the lagna, and rarely the rashi
Take the fictional birth this site uses for its samples: 14 February 1992 at 10:35 a.m. in Jaipur. That morning Mesh (Aries) lagna rose in Jaipur from 10:02 to 11:38, a window of 1 h 37 min. A birth recorded before 10:02 would have Meen (Pisces) lagna; one after 11:38, Vrishabh (Taurus) lagna. The rashi is Mithun (Gemini), and the Moon held it from 14 Feb, 04:33 to 16 Feb, 05:45, about 49 hours.
So a birth time that is out by twenty minutes can change the lagna, and with it every house, while the rashi stays the same. Near the edge of a lagna's window even a few minutes matter. This is why astrologers ask for the time from a hospital record or birth certificate rather than a family estimate.
The rashi is less sensitive, but not immune. If the Moon changed sign on your birthday, the time decides which side of the change you fall on; the rashi calculator warns you when that happens.
What each one is read for
The lagna and its houses frame the whole chart:
- the body, health tendencies and general temperament (the first house);
- which houses each planet rules from your lagna, and so whether it acts as a helpful or a difficult planet for you;
- the life areas each dasha period will touch, judged by the houses its planet rules and occupies;
- the divisional charts such as the Navamsa, which also start from a lagna.
The rashi carries the moving parts:
- the mind and emotional response (the Moon is manas, the mind);
- the start of the Vimshottari dasha, from the Moon's nakshatra;
- gochar, transits counted from the Moon, including Sade Sati and Shani Dhaiya;
- Ashtakoot kundli matching, which compares Moon signs and nakshatras;
- the traditional first syllable of a name, from the Moon's nakshatra pada.
Which one do horoscopes use?
A newspaper rashifal in India is written per Moon sign. The daily horoscope on this site is also calculated for the Vedic Moon sign: Saturn, Jupiter and the other planets are counted from your rashi.
Some astrologers publish a lagna-based forecast as well, counting transits from the ascendant. Both are traditional. A forecast for one sign is still shared by a twelfth of all readers; a reading from your own lagna and Moon together needs your own kundli. Western sun-sign columns are a third, separate thing: they use the tropical Sun, not the lagna or the rashi.
When the lagna and the rashi are the same sign
If the Moon was rising, or anywhere in the first house, your lagna and rashi are the same sign. Readings then lean on that sign twice, and the Moon becomes a strong influence on the first house. It is a feature of the chart, not a dosha and not a promise of anything.
When they differ, neither one overrides the other. A reading that uses only one of them leaves out half of what the chart says.
If you do not know your birth time
Without a time, the lagna cannot be known, and neither can the houses. The rashi usually can: the Moon spends about two days or more in a sign, so the date alone settles it except on a day the Moon changed sign. A chart without a time is read from the Moon, as a Chandra kundli. The kundli without birth time page shows what can be computed and what cannot.

Frequently asked questions about lagna and rashi
What is the difference between lagna and rashi?
The lagna is the sign rising in the east at your birth and depends on the exact time and place; the rashi is the Moon's sign and mostly depends on the date. The lagna sets the twelve houses; the rashi drives dasha, transits, Sade Sati and matching.
Which is more important, lagna or rashi?
Classical practice reads both. The lagna frames the chart and its houses, and the rashi shows the mind and the timing tools. A reading that uses only one leaves half the chart out.
Can lagna and rashi be the same?
Yes, when the Moon is in the first house, that is in the lagna sign. The sign then carries extra weight in the reading. It is a feature of the chart, not a dosha.
Is the daily rashifal based on lagna or rashi?
Most Indian rashifal, including the daily horoscope on this site, is written for the Vedic Moon sign. Some astrologers also publish forecasts by lagna, counting transits from the ascendant.
How much does birth time change the lagna?
A lagna rises for about two hours on average, so near the edge of its window a few minutes can change it, and with it every house. The rashi changes only if the Moon changed sign close to your birth time.
What is Chandra lagna?
It is the chart read with the Moon's sign as the first house. Astrologers use it alongside the birth lagna, and on its own when the birth time is unknown.
