Pick your birth month to get your birthstone: garnet for January, amethyst for February, through to turquoise for December, with the month's other stones and its colour. A birthstone is a calendar custom, not astrology: for a Vedic stone chosen from your birth chart, follow the gemstone pointer under the result.

Worked example, September: Sapphire, blue. A blue sapphire is neelam, Saturn's stone in the navaratna and the one Jyotish handles with most care.

| In the Vedic navaratna | Yes: Blue Sapphire (Neelam), the stone of Saturn |
Vedic note. A blue sapphire is neelam, Saturn's stone in the navaratna and the one Jyotish handles with most care.
As jewellery, wear it. The calendar list has no rules. As a Vedic remedy, neelam is considered only when Saturn suits your chart, and then after a trial of a few days.
The Vedic way. Jyotish does not choose a stone by month. It starts from your ascendant's 1st, 5th and 9th lords and rules out stones that could work against your chart, so many people get no stone at all: the free gemstone calculator applies that rule to your birth details, and birthstone vs rashi ratna explains the difference.
The modern list was published by American jewellers in 1912 and revised since: tanzanite joined December in 2002 and spinel joined August in 2016. Many months now carry more than one stone; the first is the one most jewellers sell for the month.

A birthstone answers "which gem goes with my birth month?". A Vedic ratna answers "which planet in my chart should be strengthened?", and it comes with rules about who should not wear a stone at all. Five birthstones happen to be Vedic gems too, which is where the two lists can collide: a September baby given a blue sapphire is, in Jyotish terms, wearing neelam. Our guide birthstone vs rashi ratna explains both in full.
In Jyotish each of the nine grahas has a stone, and a stone is said to strengthen its planet, which is why it is not for everyone: strengthening a planet that works against your chart is said to do harm. The free gemstone calculator starts from your ascendant instead of your month.
| Graha | Stone | Sold in India as |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Ruby | Manik |
| Moon | Pearl | Moti |
| Mars | Red Coral | Moonga |
| Mercury | Emerald | Panna |
| Jupiter | Yellow Sapphire | Pukhraj |
| Venus | Diamond | Heera |
| Saturn | Blue Sapphire | Neelam |
| Rahu | Hessonite | Gomed |
| Ketu | Cat's Eye | Lehsunia |
As jewellery, choose what you love: a birthstone needs nothing but your month. Ask for a certificate from a recognised gem laboratory, and expect treated or lab-grown stones to be declared. If you mean to wear a stone as a Vedic remedy, check the chart first, set a budget, and remember that no stone can promise a job, a marriage or a cure.
Birthstone Calculator FAQ
What is my birthstone by month?
January garnet, February amethyst, March aquamarine, April diamond, May emerald, June pearl, July ruby, August peridot, September sapphire, October opal, November topaz and December turquoise, with the other stones for each month in the table.
Does my birth date change my birthstone?
No. The modern list goes by month only, so everyone born in the same month shares the stones. The day and year matter for a Vedic stone, which is read from the birth chart.
Is a birthstone the same as a rashi ratna?
No. A birthstone comes from the calendar month. A rashi ratna is the stone of the planet ruling a sign, and Vedic astrology checks the chart before recommending one.
Which birthstones are also Vedic gems?
Ruby (Sun), pearl (Moon), emerald (Mercury), diamond (Venus) and blue sapphire (Saturn). The other birthstones are not among the nine Vedic gems.
Can I wear my birthstone if it is a Vedic gem?
As jewellery, yes: the calendar list has no rules. As a Vedic remedy, have the chart checked first, especially for a blue sapphire, the stone Jyotish handles with most care.
How is a gemstone chosen in Vedic astrology?
From the ascendant: the lords of the 1st, 5th and 9th houses are the candidates, and a stone is ruled out when its planet sits in a difficult house. Many people end up with no stone.
