Mars Sign Calculator
Enter your date of birth to find your Mars sign, the planet astrology reads for drive, courage and anger. You get it in the Western (tropical) and the Vedic (sidereal) zodiac, about 24° apart, with the exact degree, the dates Mars held that sign and whether it was retrograde. Mars's house, which decides Manglik dosha, needs a birth time and place.

Worked example, 15 August 1995, 10:30, New Delhi: Western (tropical) Mars in Libra at 15°07′; Vedic (sidereal) Mars in Kanya (Virgo) at 21°19′.
| Zodiac | Mars sign | Position | Mars was in this sign from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Western (tropical) | Libra | 15°07′ Libra | 21 July 1995 to 7 September 1995 |
| Vedic (sidereal, Lahiri) | Kanya (Virgo) | 21°19′ Virgo | 10 July 1995 to 29 August 1995 |
Western reading. Mars stands for drive, courage, anger and how you go after what you want. In Western astrology, Mars in Libra acts after weighing every side, and dislikes open conflict.
Vedic reading. Your kundli places Mars in Kanya (Virgo), where it is in an enemy's sign. A Vedic chart reads a planet with its house, which needs your birth time and place: the free kundli shows it.
Why the two differ. At this date the two zodiacs stood 23°47′ apart (the Lahiri ayanamsa), so the same Mars at 15°07′ Libra in the Western zodiac is at 21°19′ Virgo in the Vedic one. The two signs match only when the planet sits in the first 6° or so of its Vedic sign.
Motion. Mars was direct at this moment.
Manglik? Manglik dosha depends on the house Mars occupies, counted from your ascendant and Moon, not on its sign: the Manglik dosha calculator needs your birth time and place.
Read at 10:30; in New Delhi, India (28.6139°N, 77.2090°E, Asia/Kolkata).
The calculator reads Mars's position at your birth from the Swiss Ephemeris, the same planetary tables our kundli uses, twice: measured from the March equinox (the tropical zodiac of Western astrology) and measured from the stars with the Lahiri ayanamsa (the sidereal zodiac of Vedic astrology, used across India).
Each sign is 30° wide in both. Mars stays in a sign for about six to seven weeks, and up to seven months when it turns retrograde, so a date usually settles the sign. On the day it changes sign the answer depends on the hour, and the result then names both signs and the minute of the change: add your birth time.
Without a birth place the date is read in India time. The place matters only for the clock (it moves the hour of a sign change), never for which sign the planet was in.
The tropical zodiac starts at the March equinox, the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator going north. The sidereal zodiac starts from a fixed point among the stars (opposite the star Chitra, by the Lahiri convention). Because the equinox slides slowly backwards against the stars (precession, about 1° every 72 years), the two zodiacs drift apart. Today they are 24°14′ apart.
So the same planet usually sits one sign earlier in a Vedic chart than in a Western one: a Western Leo Sun is most often a Vedic Kark (Cancer) Sun. Neither sign is wrong; they answer to different traditions. A Vedic rashi, the sign most Indian astrologers ask for, is the Moon's sidereal sign, not the Sun's: the rashi calculator finds it.
Worked out by the same engine for 2026, in India time (IST). Born in another country? The dates are the same; the hour of each change moves with your clock.

Mars Sign Calculator FAQ
How do I find my Mars sign?
Enter your date of birth. The calculator reads Mars's position for that date from the ephemeris and gives its sign in both zodiacs, the dates it held the sign and whether it was retrograde.
What is the difference between Western and Vedic Mars signs?
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the seasons; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed to the stars. They are about 24° apart today, so the Vedic sign is usually one sign earlier than the Western one.
Do I need my birth time for my Mars sign?
Usually not: Mars stays in a sign for about six to seven weeks, and up to seven months when it turns retrograde. On the one day it changes sign the hour decides, and the calculator then shows both signs and the minute of the change.
Which zodiac does this site use?
Our kundli and every Vedic page use the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard in India. This calculator also shows the Western sign, labelled, for readers who follow it.
Does my Mars sign make me Manglik?
No. Manglik dosha depends on Mars's house, counted from the ascendant and the Moon, not on its sign. The Manglik dosha calculator needs your birth time and place.
Why does Mars sometimes stay in one sign for months?
Every two years or so Mars turns retrograde for about two and a half months. A retrograde loop can keep it in one sign for up to seven months, so more people share that Mars sign.
What does Mars mean in Vedic astrology?
Mangal, Mars, is read for courage, siblings, land and energy. It is exalted in Capricorn (Makar) and debilitated in Cancer (Kark); it rules Aries and Scorpio.
