Worked example: a man born on 15 March 1990 has Kua 1 (East group); his best direction is South-east (SE).
15 March 1990 is after Lichun 1990 (4 February 1990, 07:44 IST), so your Feng Shui year is 1990.
The year's digits: 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1.
For a man: 11 − 1 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1. Kua 1.
Kua 1 belongs to the East group: its trigram is Kan and its element Water.

- Sit facing your success direction, South-east (SE), when you work or study.
- Sleep with your head towards one of your four lucky directions (SE, E, S, N).
- Tradition prefers a main door that opens towards a lucky direction, and avoids facing South-west (SW), your Jue Ming, for long hours.
Kua comes from Chinese Feng Shui (the Eight Mansions school). Indian Vastu Shastra is a different system and can disagree: Vastu gives the same directions to every home, while Kua is personal. For your home by Vastu, see Vastu Shastra and the Vastu compass.
- Find your Feng Shui year. It begins at Lichun, the moment the Sun reaches 315° of the zodiac, on 3, 4 or 5 February. Born before it, use the previous year.
- Add the year's digits and keep adding until one digit is left: 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 10 → 1.
- A man's Kua is 11 minus that digit; a woman's is 4 plus it. Reduce to one digit again.
- The 5 rule: 5 has no trigram of its own, so a man's 5 becomes 2 and a woman's 5 becomes 8.
- Kua 1, 3, 4 and 9 form the East group; 2, 6, 7 and 8 the West group. Each group's lucky directions are the other group's unlucky ones.
Some books count the year from the Chinese lunar New Year (21 January to 20 February) instead of Lichun. If you were born between those two dates, such a book may give you the Kua of the other year.

Kua Number FAQ
What is a Kua number?
A number from 1 to 9 (never 5) in the Eight Mansions school of Feng Shui, worked out from your birth year and gender. It names your four lucky and four unlucky compass directions.
How is the Kua number calculated?
Add the digits of your Feng Shui birth year to one digit. A man's Kua is 11 minus it, a woman's 4 plus it, reduced to one digit. A man's 5 becomes 2 and a woman's 5 becomes 8.
I was born in January. Which year do I use?
The year before. The Feng Shui year starts at Lichun, on 3, 4 or 5 February, so anyone born before it takes the previous year's Kua. The calculator checks the exact date.
What are the East and West groups?
Kua 1, 3, 4 and 9 are the East group, with lucky directions north, south, east and south-east. Kua 2, 6, 7 and 8 are the West group, lucky in the other four.
Is the Kua number the same as Vastu?
No. Kua is Chinese Feng Shui and is personal; Vastu Shastra is the Indian system and reads the house itself. The two can disagree, and this page does not mix them.
Why does the formula use male and female?
The traditional Eight Mansions formula has only those two rules. Some practitioners suggest using the one you identify with; the tradition itself does not say more.
My partner and I have different Kua numbers. What then?
That is common. Feng Shui practice usually gives the main earner's or each person's own directions priority for their desk and side of the bed. It is a tradition, not a rule.
